Vingt-cinq ans après son essai à succès, La Vie des abeilles (1901), Maurice Maeterlinck consacre deux nouvelles études aux insectes sociaux : La Vie des termites (1926) et La Vie des fourmis (1930). L'insecte social représente alors un miroir à plusieurs facettes où entomologistes, médecins, philosophes entendent percevoir ― et fantasment parfois ― l'origine et le devenir des organisations sociales et politiques humaines, de la morale ou encore de la civilisation.Au croisement du traité de vulgarisation scientifique, de l'essai philosophique et de la vision symboliste ou métaphysique, ces deux essais laissent entendre les doutes et les espoirs d'une époque, mais aussi d'un écrivain qui prête une attention particulière aux modes d'être des autres vivants, et dévoile une sensibilité écologique qui continuera d'habiter certaines de ses féeries et essais tardifs.

Maurice Polydore Marie Bernard Maeterlinck (also called Count Maeterlinck from 1932) was a Belgian playwright, poet, and essayist who was a Fleming, but wrote in French.

He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911 "in appreciation of his many-sided literary activities, and especially of his dramatic works, which are distinguished by a wealth of imagination and by a poetic fancy, which reveals, sometimes in the guise of a fairy tale, a deep inspiration, while in a mysterious way they appeal to the readers' own feelings and stimulate their imaginations".

The main themes in his work are death and the meaning of life. His plays form an important part of the Symbolist movement.

bisschen nischig, sehr interessant, aber kann jetzt nichts einfach empfehlen, das unter anderem auf der Idee einer biologischen Hierarchie, die auch vor der Gleichheit der Menschen keinen Halt macht (read: Rassismus), konstruiert ist
