I am the author of 3 crime novels featuring Kelly Lowe; a hard hitting, no-nonsense detective who encounters a manaical murderer and his minions. Throughout the series, Kelly is unable to free herself from their terrorism. While trying to stay one step ahead of her stalkers, Kelly must also solve ghastly murders. Kelly and her team are on constant alert as they track down killers and hope to stay alive themselves. When I am not putting my macabre imagination to work, I am the lead singer and rhythm guitarist in a classic rock cover band. My day job involves helping addicts and alcoholics put their lives back together. I enjoy the outdoors and many of my favorite places and hobbies make appearances in my books. Thank you for checking out the Kelly Lowe series for yourself.
Author: Lori Boggs Published by: TreasureLine Publishing Age Recommend: Adult Reviewed By: Arlena Dean Raven Rating: 5 Blog Review For: GMTA Review: "For The Helpless" by Lori Boggs was indeed a good mystery criminal read. I found this novel very hard to put down until I was through with it. This was a very easy read.
The story was set in Oregon area where Detective Kelly Lowe and Chris Patrick are on the trail of a serial killer... . who is preying on children. For Kelly I can say that she is really a tough (no none sense) detective that did see the job through and her partner (Chris) was a dedicated good detective and family man.
The plot, the police procedurals and the geographical areas were so very detailed that you will soon realize that Ms. Boggs did a good job at her storytelling. "For The Helpless" was a very fast read. The characters were very real and believable making you fill part of the read. There are many twist and turns making it a good page turner and with all of its suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat. When I had finished the novel I was left waiting for more!
I did enjoy "For The Helpless" finding it quite an interesting and well written read and I would definitely recommend this novel as a good read.
For the Helpless, by Author Lori Boggs, is a suspenseful and entertaining read, peppered with the right amount of dark humor and intrigue to keep the reader engrossed while investigating each page.
The characters are well defined: Chris Patrick being a sturdy detective and a steadfast family man, while his partner-in-crime-solving, Detective Kelly "K-Lowe" Lowe, is simply a sight to behold, with plenty of moxie, allure, and a tough-as-nails attitude. Subtle hints of Gracie Hart - Sandra Bullock's character from the film Miss Congeniality - come to mind while absorbing K-Lowe's demeanor, though Boggs' characters and storyline are nowhere near as campy.
The suspense is well placed: counterbalanced between Detectives Patrick and Lowe desperately trying to outwit a killer hellbent on preying upon children - before he claims his third victim - and that of Detective Lowe's attempt to escape from her own rather unfortunate predicament.
If suspense and dark humor is your cup of tea, For the Helpless is an open and shut case.

For the Helpless is a fast paced crime novel. Set in the Portland, Oregon area and many other Oregon locations, I loved being able to say 'I know that place, I've been there!' Aside from really connecting with the locations, Boggs makes the characters believable and by the end of the book, you feel like you know and care about them. The twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat and wanting more! Detective Kelly Lowe tells the story in this book and I felt like she was talking to me, it wasn't long before I was right there with her, going through all of the psychological warfare her nemesis puts her through. Boggs has done such a great job of developing the storyline and the characters, my only complaint was that it ended too soon, with a purposefully open-ended ending. I can't wait for the sequel, there are questions that need answered!
"For The Helpless" is the story of Detective Kelly Lowe, who is on the trail of a serial killer in Oregon (my home state). There is a great plot line and some outstanding police procedural detail here; in fact, there is a lot to like. Author Lori Boggs has included some great geographical detail to boot.
Unfortunately, the book was hampered by some fairly major editorial issues. For example, there are continuity problems, with one character referred to at various times as Sylvia, Sylvie and Silvy. There are also some stylistic problems (people saying "OK" and "BBQ" in their quotations instead of "okay" and "barbecue"; people do not speak in acronyms, and I must confess that this is becoming a pet peeve of mine as a reviewer).
Without getting into spoilers, I will also say that I figured out the "whodunnit" halfway through the book. I admit to reading a great many mysteries, so perhaps I've just gotten better at that over the course of time. Others may not agree, but I found it fairly easy to finger the perpetrator.
Boggs' writing is excellent overall and I would not hesitate to recommend the book to fans of police procedurals, with the aforementioned caveats.
Couldn't put this one down, full of suspense. I thought I had the killer figured out but a few twists keept me guessing right to the end and was a little surprised at the ending. The storyline is around Detective Lowe and her team's investigation into the a possible serial killer of young girls. The killer has already brutually killed two of the girls. The third seems to be alive and teh team is working hard at trying to find her alive.
This was a great little book. Full of suspense. A real page turner. Oregon geography is accurate which was helpful in seeing the breadth of investigation. Well developed characters and a few giggles here and there. Looking forward to book #2.
Kelly is working a case to stop a killer, young girls are being murdered Then the phone calls, can her and partner Chris figure it out. Good plot, and you like the no nonsense approach that Kelly has in the story.
Kelly Lowe is a tough as nails, sassy, homicide detective juggling her job and a boyfriend who is more romantically inclined than she is. When young girls start disappearing and showing up brutally tortured and murdered, and the killer begins trading taunting phone calls with her, the story becomes a race against time for Kelly to find him without becoming a victim herself.
There is a lot of action and danger in this novel, all of it packed concisely into scenes that flick one to another with the breeziness of a made for TV crime thriller. Detective Lowe is a textbook composite of personalities suitable for "movie of the week heroine" and she wavers constantly between tough tomboy swagger and cat cuddling vulnerability. It was easy enough to like her, especially in scenes where she stood up to men twice her size, and bantered in a sibling-esque fashion with her seasoned partner. There was a lot of censored restraint exercised in writing her, however, and it showed bluntly in emotionally charged scenes where Lowe is reduced to yelling "Mother-effer" as she punches out in frustration or refers to people simply as "S.O.B's".
The bleeps are of course the writer's choice and violence and language is clearly kept to a PG-13 minimum. It does provide a refuge for a reader wanting a crime thriller without all the gory extras, but at the same time it gave me this feeling that Detective Lowe was merely a sassy teenage girl pretending to be a cop. The sharp edge of danger I wanted to feel just was not present in the book.
The plot is quite complicated and at times confusing, as there is little real face put to the villain or suspects, at least not until around the last third of the novel. There are the taunting phone calls to Detective Lowe and a twist or two but the energy spent on trying to untangle a pile of suspects who had no personality left me rather cold and not on the edge of my seat. That isn't to say the killer had no teeth, however. Innocent girls are murdered and in horrible fashion but the entire feel of it was as if it were "Seven" packaged for the Family Channel.
I can't say I hated this book because I read through it easily and with enough concern for Detective Lowe's fate, but I did not particularly like it either. I think the author does have a good knack for telling a story, but I really would like her to throw a little more snarl into the pot.
This book was well written with good mystery and police action. I think I would have given it 4 stars if there was just a little more grit. Most of the good guy characters were just so darn nice and it felt like they were lacking a little bit of depth. Even in numerous heated moments the protagonist still uses the word "effing". It's not that I necessarily want to read a bunch of swear words, but the toned down language really didn't convince me of the character's supposed grief and rage. I just couldn't feel it. I didn't mind the back and forth between present and past except that I felt there were a few parts lightly skipped over that I felt would have been better written out more thoroughly. What was the connection between the mastermind and those carrying out what we assume was an act of revenge on a fellow prisoner? How exactly did the protagonist get caught in the first place? Perhaps more will be divulged in the next book.
This sounded good and I did get 90 of the 290 pages in but had had enough by then. Shocking continuity with peoples' names for example, then heaps of apostrophe errors. The book couldn't support it as it wasn't gripping me enough to overlook them. It all seemed a bit over-the-top and not very believable in places.
I really liked this book. It was a good suspense with lots of potential bad guys and twists to leave you guessing. I loved all of the characters, and can't wait to find out what happens in the next book!
I have not read good mystery book in a long time. I have been tied up with my zombie books. But this was an outstanding book. I will probably go back to reading them again especially this author. Good going girl. Keep up the good books.
