This book is truly terrible. It's supposed to provide phrases to use during performance reviews or feedback conversations with employees, but a lot of the suggested phrases are offensive, sarcastic, or just extremely rude. This is definitely not the way that anyone should be talking to other people at work, and many things in this book would probably land you in HR. I flagged a whole bunch of phrases that I found particularly problematic throughout the book - these are just a few:
"You either have some serious problems or you're the laziest employee I've ever had." "I could understand your negative attitude if you were handicapped in some way." "There's nothing worse than disloyalty among my ranks. Don't ever make that mistake." "I'm not asking for heroic self-sacrifice - just ordinary loyalty that one would ask of even the lowliest servant." "How do I know you're complaining? Your mouth is moving." "They always say to dress for the job you want; in your case it looks as though you'd prefer to be a janitor." "Someone like you is probably incapable of working with others." "At least you are consistent: you always let us down."
I am going to throw 4 stars at this but it really is hard to appraise (ha!). At times the suggestions for messaging to staff were sooo horribly wrong and against discrimination protections as to be laugh out loud BAD. Other areas were better. I took some notes while reading, and will use a few (very few) of the recommended phrases. I also am giving it 4 stars because I like the idea of this book and am going to try the Leader's Phrase Book and the Manager's Phrase Book as well.
I was excited to put this to work, and found it to be totally useless. It's a giant list of witty snide remarks. I was drawn in since leafing through it I found one that made me chuckle, but 99% were just ugh.
At my company, I am in charge of over 20 people. Performance Appraisal every month of November is a mandatory thing and I really dislike doing it. Thankfully, Patrick Alain came up with a very interesting concept that not only has helped me, but three other managers who work in the same office. DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED !!
I liked how they help you to give your speeched when doing a performance appraisal review. Personnally and quite frankly, this allowed me to use humor and to ease the tensions when I had to handle this with my employees.
