Read to the toddlers. Wholesome stuff and beautiful illustrations. Good balance of text to imagery. Alfie can be a bit of a brat though. And Mum’s haircut…

Consisting of Alfie's Feet, An Evening At Alfie's, Alfie Gives A Hand and Alfie Gets In First, this collection is simply beautiful! I found this whilst routing through my childhood books and felt a wave of nostalgia knowing the stories instantly when I read through each one even though my parents must have read these to me at least 18 years ago! Hughes creates a warm fuzzy feeling though her illustrations, family settings and relatable childhood events such as parties, getting new shoes and the excitement of a babysitter. These books contain themes of sibling love/rivalry, friendship, sharing and family. Although this is a collection that can be revisited at every age I think these books are most suitable for Years 1 and 2.
