Fire with Fire is the second book in the Demonblood series by Penelope King. All I can say is wow. I received the first book in this series, A Demon Made Me Do It, for review, and as soon as I read the last sentence I immediately got on Amazon and purchased this book. I just was not ready for the drama to be finished. Unfortunately, now I have to wait until this summer to get my next fix.

Fire with Fire continues the story of Liora and Lucky. It picks up the story a couple of months down the road from where the first book had ended. Liora/Lucky is impatiently awaiting Kieron's return. In the meantime, Liora finds something akin to love in the new boy, Tristan, and Lucky is finding comfort in the arms of an old friend, Bones. But, things are not always what they seem, and soon Liora and Lucky have to figure out who it is they can really trust. When a series of attacks lead them and their friends into hostile territory, misplaced trust will take them on a journey that can only end in tragedy.

So, where to start? I love this story, but I'm not sure what to say without giving too much away! In this book Liora is still struggling with trying to be "normal" and getting through the last few months of high school. She finds comfort in Tristan, and even when concerns are raised about their relationship, Liora defends him, possibly alienating her one and only friend. At the same time, Lucky, having no idea what kind of trouble Liora has gotten herself into, is struggling to understand and control her feelings for her best friend, which is much more complicated with Kieron away. She is also really struggling with her own low self-esteem, putting the blame on herself for everything that goes wrong. Kieron…I'm not sure what to do with him. First you love him, then you hate him, then you love him, then you hate him…right now I love him, but we'll have to see where that goes in the next book. And then there is Bones. Hmmm…I'm not going to say too much about him, because I can't without giving away way too much information, but I love Bones so much! He's so sexy and sweet and caring and loving and cuddly…and did I mention sexy?!

This book, like the first in the series, was fast moving and unpredictable. There were moments when I thought I knew what was going to happen, and then…surprise! I was wrong, and of course what was written was way better than what I had came up with in my head. And the ending…another cliffhanger. The characters are so very well written that you just feel like you know them, whether it is to love them or hate them. They stick with you and make you want more.

The worlds the author has created are complex and unique. It's really amazing how you can have two separate worlds in this book that are overlapping and coexisting but yet not really interacting. I think the story idea in this series is so unique. Normally the demons are portrayed as the bad guys, but here that's not the case. When Lucky goes tormenting it is people who are breaking the law, usually against innocent people.

So, long story short, I love this series and cannot wait for this summer so I can read the next in the series.

Love this!

I give it 4½♥'s

VERY surprising turn of events. I have to admit, the story lines I would have figured as a sequel to A Demon Made Me Do It don't hold a candle to the roller coaster ride in this book. My heart about leaped out my chest several times. Great follow-up, and still looking forward to more.

"Love can shove it."

And Bones is as always, oh, so HOT! I think I like him best of the guys in the series. I initially was on the fence as to which 'team' I was on (Team Bones vs. Team Kieron) But after this book- Kieron can suck eggs. Bones all the way!

"There is something almost godlike in the symmetry of of his perfection."

"If I was just me... how I'm supposed to be, not this broken, lesser version of myself, then you would be the one for me. No question."

We learn so much more of the background of many characters in this one; I especially enjoyed seeing just how powerfully Tatty was. About the only characters I was not 'sold' on was the 'new guy' Tristan, and his entourage. I actually found myself wishing I could skip ahead when the story followed along with Tristan and Liora.

"I remember everything. Oh, how I wish I didn't."

Overall, I found it to be a great follow-up, and still continues to be a well written, hot made-for-older-audiences YA. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone that wants the angst of youthful characters mixed with steamy, hot demon lovin'.

SUMMARY (50 words or less)

This story kicks ass. It picks up not too far from where we left off. Although it had been a while since I read the first, I didn’t have trouble picking up and moving along. This book was fast pace from the start and didn’t lag any along the way.

**Spoilers and swearing ahead.**

I received a copy of this book from the Read it and Reap program in the Shut Up & Read group, in exchange for an honest review.

This is barely even a review, but I really could not care less.

For me, this series is just going downhill. I liked the first book more than this one. Fire With Fire pissed me off so much. There are still things from book 1 that I don't understand and other things that still haven't been explained. But before I go into them, I'm gonna write about a few scenes that thoroughly entertained me... Not.

Why was Bones acting like an a-hole to Lucky while he flirted with Catalina? And why did his behaviour instantly change when the war declaration happened? Yes Lucky was in danger, and yes Catalina had just been reduced to a pile of ash. But why did he treat his best friend like a piece of dirt? Especially when he was meant to be guarding the bridge against an attack such as what occurred.

In the chapter where we met Tristan, Liora often mentions that she gets odd feelings such as a "sudden chill" running up her spine, or "someone has dumped a bucket of ice water" on her, or she may have been "sitting on a block of ice". Why did it just suddenly stop? Yes we are later told that Lucky is feeling the effects of Liora's 'illness'. But seriously, it just magically stopped. Why? And why did Liora stop thinking about it?

Why does Liora trust people so easily? Surely, after being through the split (to become half demion/half sapie) she would've learnt that you can't judge a book by its cover. With Kieron, she jumped straight into the deep end. Trusted him 100% from day 1. Was heartbroken when she found out he was a demion. And again with Tristan. She says - well, thinks - about why she feels like she's standing in an ice bath. That even in a time of panic she feels calm. Also, Tatiana starts forgetting things. All while in Tristan's presence. ARE YOU THAT BLIND LIORA?! Seriously!

Liora/Lucky was with Kieron for how long exactly? Right through until he reappears L/L are both depressed, never fully getting over him. Seriously?! He disappeared. You've said multiple times that you've come to terms with the fact that he won't ever come back. Yet we are treated to reading exactly the same thing 15 times. GET OVER HIM!
Page 42- "now that I know how much I need him." Nobody NEEDS a boyfriend/second half... Whatever you want to say. But this is just plain ridiculous. It's been 3 months... Time to move on L/L.

What's this "drink from the Source" stuff? In book 1 I just assumed it was something to do with Demon bar. Buuut that's gone now sooo... Seriously though, it's book 2. I should know this by now. Unless I read it when I was zoned out... Which is a definite possibility.

In book 1, Kieron said he was sent to the town to kill L/L. What are the consequences of him not killing them, but falling in love instead? Nothing happened. Absolutely nothing. I could not care less if he was a hostage. That doesn't excuse him from punishment. He still needs to face the consequences of his actions.

Toward the end (around page 170-180ish) when their house is destroyed, I'm pretty sure others would've heard them screaming and the "thunderous boom" that "shook the ground". How secluded is their cabin? How far away are their closest neighbours? Either way, I'm pretty sure people would've heard. I mean, if there's a siren that alerts the entire town that there had been an emergency at the mines, I'm sure they'd hear a house exploding.

Now for some quotes and my reaction to those.

Page 22- A "secret lever" opens Demon bar. No mention in book 1.

Page 28- "I've been here almost 2 weeks.." at the school or in the town? There was no indication of time passing until that moment. I thought it was the day after she met Tristan.

"Kill Devil Hills." That's where Tristan took Liora. Nuff said there.

"...was hinting at something more sinister... almost like he was mocking me when he said the name of this quaint seaside town." - Really? How on earth did you come to that conclusion?! How much more obvious can you get?!

"Not never... just not now. She's too valuable. She's the key to our future... to everything." - What exactly is wiping out an entire race going to achieve? What they're talking about is revenge. But the thing about revenge is it doesn't matter how much damage you do, the pain will always be there. Killing won't give you satisfaction or whatever. It won't bring back a fallen friend. Even if you hate whoever killed them, no satisfaction can come from death. No matter who you are or what side you're on. Killing does not achieve or solve anything. If anything, it just creates more problems.

"Know that I love you," he whispers in my ear as he gently slides himself inside me." - Sex scene, yaaay!! Lets hope L/L has been taking birth control because guess what an incubus does?! Seduces and impregnates women. Ugh.

"Seeing you with Tristan... well, I don't like it. Not one bit. It makes my skin crawl. You never act like this with Kieron... with him you were much more normal." - Yay Corrine!!! You are - and have been for a while - my favourite character! Good girl for standing up to her. This is probably one of, if not the, most logical conversations in the novel.

"You're just jealous," I snap. "Jealous that I have a guy that likes me and you don't." - You're a fucking bitch. Who in their right mind speaks to their best friend that way?

"So yeah, call me a dumbass, 'cause I have NO FUCKING CLUE WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT!" - Yes Corrine!! You are fucking awesome!! But to be honest, I don't know what she's talking about most of the time either... And I don't really care. *shrugs*

"Are you telling me you got a really good look at his face and didn't see any scars? Nothing?" - What's with the 20 questions? She's already said, multiple times, that she saw no scars on his face.

"You're friend. Corrine. She wasn't sick. She was hurt. And you're worried about her." - How do you know exactly? What, you're telepathic too?

"But I don't quite know what to make of this thing with Tristan." - Break it the fuck off! He's bad news... How many more signs do you need?!

"Like that day she thought I went to the mines with him... wait, did we go there?" Wait, what?! This is the first mention of her having no memory of the mines trip. It would've been nice to find this out earlier. And how was her memory erased? Was it Tristan? Does this mean light angels can manipulate this?

"I feel like such a pathetic loser...." - Yay, you finally admitted what I've thought of you all along!

"Somewhere around here should be the portal. Diablo stops...." - Wait... Diablo is in the human world?

"And I felt you..." - Quite literally. Oh wait, you don't know that, though you're meant to be pregnant with his child.

"I hadn't even considered the possibility that Tristan was anything but a regular human." - Because you're stupid. Seriously Liora, get a brain.. Or get Tatiana to create one for you. I mean, she is powerful enough.

"...someone is after you... damn!" - No shit Sherlock.

"Whatever Tristan is trying to do, I don't think he wants to hurt me." - Pardon? You just found out he's a demon feeding on your soul. He's already hurt you.

"Just don't be reckless or take unnecessary risks." - She's on a freaking suicide mission so I think your point is moot.

"I open my palms wide and release a thundering storm of fire and lightning. It blasts out the wall of my bedroom, exposing the forest beyond. Several rows of trees are left charred and smoldering, and bright orange and red embers sizzle in the still night." - What the actual fuck?! What just happened?!

"Sorry about the mess. I'll fix it when I get home..." - You mean Liora will. Wait, you're both gonna be dead sooo yeah.

"Nothing has changed. You know that..." - You slept with your best friend. I'm pretty sure that changes things.

"...We're joined by Alik and Khalil." - What happened to that awesome one that was paying out Lucky? I forgot his name...

"You are very strong tonight. Much stronger than I've seen you in some time..." - Sooo having sex with an incubus makes you stronger? Ummm... Ok?

"But I can't think about that right now..." - You are thinking about that right now.

"I cannot torture myself any more than I already have." - And yet you said nothing had changed between you.

"Micah stands beside our table, looking like he's ready to pose for the cover of a trashy romance novel." - You say that like it's a bad thing. I like trashy romance novels. And he's hot.

"...crazy bitch get what's coming to her." - BOOM!! Go Micah!!!

"...still simmering over Micah's rudeness." - What you did to Corrine was a zillion times worse than Micah's behaviour. Screw you for even thinking that.

"...Getting Kieron back..." - Aaand you continue to break your best friends heart.

"...but I like the idea of being unprotected even less." - That's why you decided to do this by yourself before everyone else decided to join you on your suicide mission.

"... Just think of Kieron." - 2 timing much.

"... worthless human pumpkin." - Why is Liora so worthless? Because she's human? She still has demonic blood running through her veins. She's still a strong fighter.

"...Gyan twists his body back and pulls out something from beneath his jacket. His body jerks violently. In a fraction of an instant, Aria's severed head flies past me, landing on the ground beside Bones. Gyan pushes her headless corpse off Kyrie and smirks as it turns to ash." - THAT WAS SO FUCKING AWESOME!! Who cares if she's dead!! THAT WAS AWESOME!! I think you're my new favourite Gyan!!! That was super freaking awesome!!

"Traitor implies I was ever on your side to begin with, you arrogant little bitch." - Yep, definitely my favourite!!

"... And I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life with my sweet Genevieve. But you had other plans in mind when you decided to kill her for... how did you put it? Oh, yeah... for cheap thrills." - Wow. First we've heard of this. Once again Lucky, SCREW YOU.

"We are obviously outnumbered. There's no point in even thinking about trying to fight. But I will kill Gyan if it's the last thing I do." - No shit Sherlock. And no, you're not going to kill Gyan or I will find a way to kill you.

"I thought she was supposed to be some kind of warrior." - Nup. Just a bitch who toys with her best friends feelings because she's lonely because Kieron left.

"She's not so tough after all." - Thanks Captain Obvious.

"The stones are still safely hidden beneath my cloak, but I can't very well use them with everyone so close." - Wait... Aren't you bound? The page before says so. Surely they would've bound your wrists so you can't fight them.

"Shut that mouth or ?I'll shut it for you. Permanently." - Please do.

"And now I will die here." - Yay!

"You taste delicious," he says with a salacious smile. "I think I'm going to nibble on your legs for dinner." - LOL!!

"...biggest, most gullible, incompetent idiot that ever lived..." - Yeah, that's you.

"...he lets his tongue fly across the cage like a lasso, slicing my arms and face with burning acid." - Lizard demon? Snake demon? Whatever he is, that was a freaking weird mental image..... :/

"...and I lower my pants so he can soothe the burning on my thighs." - Is that all? ;)

"Where's that piss and vinegar and firespitting attitude I love about you?" - I've never seen it...

"...he watches me disentangle my body from Bones' passionate embrace." - Yep. Making out with your best friend in front of your half dead boyfriend. That's the perfect way to welcome him back into your life.

"I scream from the top of my lungs and the depths of my fiery soul. Before I can stop myself, fireballs erupt from my palms..." - YOU ARE TRULY INSANE.

"You are no longer a demon, you have become a human." - Fuck this. She is half demion, half human. She still has demon blood in her. That should've affected her.

"No one is really interested in seeing their junk." - Really?!

"It's the Legionaire! Run for your lives!" - Aaand at just the right moment, the nonexistent problem is solved. It would've been nicer if they came when Bones and Liora were a little closer to death.

"It's all I can do to hold back my screams of relief." - Even after he set you up? Led you into a trap? Declared "false" love for you?

"We only seek justice, not war." - Why the war declaration (ch 5) then?

"You got Bones killed... you almost got me killed." - Grow a pair.

"...if I disseminated some info through the underground..." - In English, please.

"I know I just woke up, but for some reason I remember Kieron's words... or was I dreaming?" - Huh??

"...operate on instinct and heightened senses..." - First mention in the series.

"I hate you! Go away!" - Perfect thing to say to your enemy before they kill you.

"...the White Ash dozens of yards away..." - didn't they just stand at the ash tree?

"...massive oak tree... the spot where I first met bones all those years ago." - I'm confused... You met him in the human world or demon world?

"You need to eat. You need your strength." - You make it sound like they're walking to LA.

"I place a gentle hand on my belly and smile up at the man I love." - She's pregnant?

"End of Book 2" - Thank God, it's over!

Fuck this book and its lack of logic.

One last note. The romance is so messed up. So Kieron doesn't care that L/L is - well, should be - preggers with Bones' child. Kieron doesn't care that when he woke up, it was to the sight of Bones and Lucky dry humping and sucking each others face off in their entrapment. Bones doesn't care that Lucky will choose Kieron over him. Neither Bones nor Kieron care that L/L has been making out with Tristan. Seriously, what the heck is with the romance in this book?!! It's like a really fucked up love triangle. With an extra side. So I guess it's a love square...

Okay, so If you haven't guessed already, I really disliked this book. Will I torture myself with the third book? Most likely. I just wanna know if she really is pregnant. And if it's Bones'. And if Kieron actually cares that he's not the father. So yes, I will read book 3. I doubt I will like it, but meh. I'll give it a go.

I wrote this at the end of my review of book 1, but I'll say it again. I'm not saying it's a bad book by any means. I'm just saying it didn't do it for me. At all.

Alright, normally I try not to write reviews that are what I like to call "spoilery" but after knocking this baby out in 2.5 hours in the wee hours of the morning I just have too much to say and I can't skip around the spoilers. So first and foremost am I the only one who immediately thought Tristan and Cassie were actually Michael and Kayla? Crazy I know, but in the first book Lucky describes having to pick up their pieces after the Amazea demons finished with them. Then Tristan and Cassie have all these crazy scars and he tells Liora that they were in an accident together. I was CON-VINCED I tell ya... and then I was wrong. But that's okay because while I felt super smart being so sure, the idea bothered me a lot. I did not like how creepy Tristan was... not at all. I felt like his character development in general was a little shady. He was ugly, then he was beautiful and made her feel calm, then all of a sudden he was ugly again. I had a really hard time understanding the effect he had over her. I didn't understand at all what could possibly be the "bug" both Liora and Lucky thought they were coming down with, and the fact that Liora was so very insistent that she didn't go to the mines when Tatiana got angry with her. I get that later Kieron explains how Tristan was sucking Liora's energy, but that still didn't seem to explain it very well, even looking back and trying to connect the pieces. However, the whole situation wasn't so confusing and frustrating that it ruined how much I was loving the book. Now... on to Bones. OH MY GOD... my heart broke a thousand times over. Bones.. oh man... Thanks for that big piece of raw sex. Let me sidenote and say how much I really truly love the idea of reincarnation and how it has been slowly but surely popping up around the YA world. I was blown away a thrilled when Ms. King slipped that little gem in there. When Bones explained to Lucky that they always found each other and it was about the sixth or seventh time she'd led him to his death, I was eating the whole thing up. Is that why she felt so much better after they finally did the deed? Are they soulmates (I know, I know, I feel like that deserves a big "well duh!")? And what was this business about her always finding Keiron too? KILL ME NOW... I can't wait for the next one. I have to know these things. I couldn't help fall a little more in love with him when he so obviously offered himself. I also got a little sick to my stomach. Then, miraculously, Kieron saves the day and rides in with the Legionaire, and I rejoiced! Until of course the head of the Legionaire turned out to be a major douchebag and killed Bones. I was also a little upset that Lucky wasn't as upset as I thought she'd be. Like I said, it was a roller coaster of emotions. Finally...a little Bones baby?! Yes please... but then I start thinking "But wait I really love Keiron now too... What happens when he finds out Lucky/Liora has a tiny hellhound growing in there? Is he going to hate Liora for Lucky's decision?!" Seriously, this really was too much for me to handle at 4am. Originally I gave the book 4 stars but after getting in a few hours of sleep and realizing I had so much to say about it, I switched it to 5. I don't think I can express how much I enjoyed this book, and you'd better believe I'll be snatching up the third one as soon as it's available!

I have to say that this book is slightly better than it's predecessor. The author's writing improved tremendously, and the plot kept me on my toes the entire time. This book would suck you in from the first line.

Like the first book in the series, Fire with Fire is told in alternating POVs between Liora and her demon counterpart Lucky. Again, the author paced it perfectly and the switching of POVs didn't leave me hanging.

In my review for A Demon Made Me Do It, I stated that Lucky was the best character in the book. Fire with Fire changed my mind. I was introduced to another side of the characters who were only props in the first book, and it blew my mind. Layers upon layers were unraveled every time you read a new chapter. Bones is my new favorite, for sure. I'm not telling you why though, you'd have to buy and read the book to find out. *wink wink, nudge nudge ;D*

One thing that i did not like was that Lucky's badasserry level went down a couple notches. She spent a lot of time pining for Kieron and it got annoying after a while. I know that it was essential for her character growth though, so all's good. I wasn't quite contented with the last chapter either. It felt flat and lacking. The cliffhanger was quite good though. I love hanging off cliffs.

Filled with plot twists and shocking revelations, Fire with Fire surprised me at every corner. This book had me craving for more.

I knew it. I KNEW IT!! The last line...I totally knew it! Okay I'm gonna calm down now and write my review in a cool and collected manner. .......................Just once more?

I knew it!!!!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Three months after the events of A Demon Made Me Do It, Liora and lucky are now at an uneasy truce. But as always, things never stay calm for long. With old enemies rearing their heads and enemy factions looking for retribution, this demion has her work cut out for her.
I loved the story. Penelope King has proved time and again how great her imagination is. The realm of dark and light angels with certain 'afterlife' and the theme related to all this really intrigued me. I would really like to read more on this topic. I particularly liked the context of Bones, Liora/Lucky and Kieron coming together time and again. And the fact that Lucky is always the death of Bones is highly amusing :D
Tristan was so creepy. From the minute he set foot, I was like he is T-R-O-U-B-L-E! And when he took Liora to the others, I was like
I was right!!
I so love Tat! I wish she would adopt me! The way she dealt with the L-As, so awesome! But we still don't know why Tatiana was so tired in the first half of the book. I hope the author addresses this issue soon.
I'm so happy they decided to take Corrine along! She is an awesome character. One of my favourite minor characters.
Speaking of favourites, did you have to kill Bones?! That was soo unexpected!
That said, I would really like the all the love-dovy emotional drama with whining and crying to just STOP
Come on! Lucky is supposed to be a kick-ass demion. She does way more crying than ass kicking! And I know Liora is a human, but no one whines that much!!
We needed way more action in this story. The title says "Fire with Fire", not "Love with Love"!
Also, the characters need to figure themselves out. Kieron loves Lucky. Lucky loves Bones. Bones loves Liora. Liora loves Kieron. Bones loves Lucky. Kieron loves Liora. And not to mention...Lucky has sex with Bones, Liora kisses Tristan.......and Kieron isn't mad! What the hell?! This is one giant fiasco that needs to be sorted ASAP. Trying to go through this gives me a migraine.
Needless to say, I have several issues with the love-lives of the characters. But apart from that, I really loved this book.
I just wish for:
1. A little more guts and spine from Liora/Lucky
2. A little less sappiness
3. A lot more action!
Conclusion
To sum it up, the author has a great imagination. Fast paced and funny, Fire with Fire is a book you wouldn't want to miss. The story is witty, filled with sarcastic dialogues and has the perfect blend of action, horror and fantasy. Just a few minor improvements, and we are good to go.
There is so much potential unexplored, just waiting for the next book! I'm definitely coming back for thirds!
I had read the first installment of this series for {Read It & Reap 55} in the Shut Up And Read group, and found it interesting. The second one, that got sent to me through the same group, I went through like a breeze. The story was compelling, and I kept being drawn back to it to read more, which is always a good sign in my case.
We already know the main characters from the first book, of course; we get to know them better here, as well as see some development that I was glad about. While Lucky might have just a tad bit too much of a tendency to feel guilty about everything bad that happens (but still gets out to kick ass no matter what), I thought Liora was getting better. There was less whining about how she doesn't fit in, and more taking things into her own hands, as well as starting to accept to live with her current state (instead of closing her eyes and trying to ignore Lucky's doings). There was also something terribly beautiful about the relationship between Lucky and Bones (I was so, so unhappy at how things unfolded in chapter 19, and hope we get to know, let's say, more in the next novel).
Kieron... got on my nerves, but part of me couldn't keep on thinking that there must be more to his shitty attitude. It was half expected, but he still gave me a good scare here. I found him weaker in this book, though. Perhaps because he doesn't appear for the first half, and gets less 'screen time'?
Tristan seemed so shady from the beginning, but I had no idea at first who or what exactly he was, nor what he wanted. I liked the way he progressively weaseled his way into Liora's life, and how it was introduced, through her skewed perception. It's not so easy to do that in a first-person narrative, and I was surprised, then intrigued, then satisfied at the way it was brought. (The part about coming back from the mines, and then chapter 11 especially, made me frown and go all "ooookay, now this is really getting weird"—toppled with that line about the blueberries pancakes.)
And Tatiana. I already liked her in the first installment, but now I like her even more.
It's hard to write a full review without spoiling too much, so I'll leave it at that. Suffice to say that I will very likely read #3, because I definitely want to know where the characters are going to take it from now on. Too many things have changed in their lives, they can't go back, and so going forward is the only option, and is bound to bring some surprises.
I just love these books! Review to come in a bit...
I was fortunate enough to receive the second book of this series as part of a Read and Review for my Shut Up and Read group. And I'm so glad I decided to participate!
So, I loved this book just as much as the first one. It kept me turning the pages and not wanting to put it down. I love when a book can do this: capture your attention so much that you really just need to find out what happens next.
This book is a great mix of action, adventure and romance.
Once again we see the world from both Liora's (human) and Lucky's (demon) POVs. In this sequel to A Demon Made Me Do It (Demonblood #1) Liora/Lucky are on a quest to find Kieron, who has disappeared. At first, both believe he has left because he did not love them, but it turns out he was captured by the enemy. And this enemy has it out for Liora/Lucky. So she, along with her best friend Bones and a few other Hell Hounds, make their way to find him. We also meet some new characters in Tristin, who Liora falls for but can't understand why when she knows she still loves Kieron, and his sister Cassie, who dislikes Liora from the start. Eventually it is revealed that Tristin and his gang are anything but human and want nothing more than to destroy Liora and her demon side.
This book draws you in right away. It's so great to be able to really see the difference between Liora and Lucky. And it's amazing the way King can actually keep them separated and believable.
Unfortunately, we lose one of the characteres I love the most, Bones. But not before Lucky gives in for her total love for him. And I can see that he is not going to be forgotten in future books, he will always be permanently part of Liora/Lucky's life.
This book takes some nice twists and turns. We learn more about Tatiana's powers and really feel her love for Liora/Lucky. We once again are fooled into thinking Liora has found something great, which turns out to be evil. People Lucky thought she could trust turn on her. And we watch Liora grow into a stronger woman, who fights for what she feels is right and what she needs.
I really have nothing that I did not like in this book. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to read about demons and romance. I cannot wait for the next inastallment!
I give this book a 4/5 as I did the first one.
Okay, it is official! Penelope King has just topped my list of favorite authors!! WOW! I still get chills thinking about this book. For those who read the first book in the Demonblood series, A Demon Made Me Do It, if you haven't read this book, drop everything and do it now!
The much loved characters of book one are back, with the addition of a few new ones. I still can't fault any of them. They are so amazing and well-written. They will stay with you for hours after you have finished reading. Especially Bones!! Super Sexy, Sweet, Smoking Hot Bones!! *sigh* I definitely have a soft spot in my heart for him! :) He can be my Incubus/Hellhound any day!
Penelope King creates such a vivid image of the world/s she has created and it was like a movie played in my head as I read each page.
There are even more twists and surprises in this book and never, for even one second, think that you know exactly what is going on. This story is as emotionally charged as book one, and more than once I found myself gasping! There was even a point where my heart felt like it shattered into a million tiny pieces. But there are also those moments that made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside :) Like the ending :))))
I had a sneaky suspicion as to how the book was going to end and I rejoiced when I read the last few words (I also burst into tears LOL)!! Brilliant!
I cannot wait for the third book in the series!
Liara & Lucky return in the second installment of the Demonblood YA series by Penelope King. Set two months after the close of A Demon Made Me Do It, Kieron, the love interest from the previous book, has disappeared and two new students, blonde siblings Tristan and Casandra have started going to Liara’s small town school. They are very rich, visibly scarred and very suspect. Meanwhile, in Lucky's world, a vicious attack on the Demon Bar she frequents followed by some unexpected news leads Lucky to start planning an offensive.
It’s difficult to empathise with Liora at first, as she is quite weak and introverted, but through her various relationships and interactions with others, she becomes more sympathetic and likeable as the story progresses. I found this echoed the first book in the series. Once the story gets going properly, the two different narratives work really well together. There is also more crossover between the two different worlds that Lucky & Liara inhabit.
Like the first book in the series, the story is again action-packed, with the main characters wheeling from one crazy situation to another. The way in which King describes the fight scenes is excellent, I was really drawn in. As events come to a head towards the end of the novel, all kinds of ridiculous things start happening, but the thread of the plot is never lost. It was fully immersive, and a definite progression from the first book in the series. A well deserved 4 stars. :)
I just finished this book a couple of minutes ago and wow there were just too many emotions in one book. Really AMAZING. And it's not that icky vampire-loving sweetness either. Fire with fire was really moving and it was perfectly executed by the Author Penelope King. I am now a huge fan of her and I really wish that I can get my hands on the third book as well , but I feel fortunate enough to read book 1 and 2 and would not hesitate to spend on a complete set of this series. I just love how this story was running in a moderate pace and it was not confusing at all. the events make you think and it made me try to predict what was going to happen next but honestly I had a hard time getting it right because there was always a twist to it. I sorta had a love/hate relationship with Kieron's character and would really prefer it if Bones and Lucky ended up together instead even if Kieron had to be the bad guy or die or something. It would also be nice to pair Corinne with someone too so she's part of the story too and not just the human sidekick who gets abused and tags along with Kieron and Liora to Los Angeles. I also loved that for once, i've read a book that the Demons were the "good guys" than having Angels or good vampires or hunky sweet werewolves as the protagonists. My new favorite series. 5++++++ stars :)
Okay, so I finished this last night and I still am having a hard time coming up with what to say about this book. It was thrilling. It was emotional (I cried a couple of times). It was downright brilliant. One of the things I admire the most about this series is that it makes you look at predudice from a different angle. Demons are supposed to be bad, but in this series they are not; at least, not all of them are.
I love the characters Ms. King has fashioned, and I love the subtle play with emotion she invokes when you are not expecting it. I am just glad there is not too long to wait until the next book arrives.
Thanks to Ms. King and to Shut Up and Read Group for the opportunity to read Fire with Fire. All I have to say is Penelope King has massive writing chops, and I am so pleased I have found this brilliant author.
That was awesome!! I'm so in love with this series and hate the fact that I have to wait for the next book. I don't want to give anything away but poor Bones, I hope we find out more about the reincarnation and how they keep finding each other. I also hope that Tatiana shows up again, I really liked her and man is she powerful. I loved how Liora "saves" Corrine, I think that was almost the best part. I can't really say what the best part is, the whole book was just awesome, so full of "what's gonna happen next" and "weird" and "OMG" and "Oh no" (sniff). I hated that it had to end, I want more!!!
Well.
After reading the first book, A Demon Made Me Do It, I immediately jumped at the chance to read this one and see how the story progressed. I wasn't disappointed. Penelope King is a talented author who I believe will only get better over the years. This book was fast-paced and full of action. It triggered different emotions at every turn--sometimes I was happy, sometimes outraged, sometimes sad. I hated Tristan from the beginning.
In my review of the first book, I mentioned that I thought the dialogue between characters often felt stilted and too formal. While that didn't change in this book, I didn't notice it much unless I made a conscious effort to do so. I've becomes accustomed to the writing style and found that I wasn't bothered by it at all this time. However, I had to give this book four stars instead of five as well. This time it's because I felt that things were a little too neat in the last third of the book.
I have a lot of questions as well. I would love to know more about the fight between the light-angels and dark-angels in these books and really wish I had more details about the demons and their roles and motivations. I know the common stories behind both sides, but I wish they were all more fleshed out here because I find it really interesting that Ms. King chose to tell this story from the demons' point of view.
Even with the flaws I mentioned above, I found the story thoroughly engaging and will be looking forward to the next installment.
And I jut want to add hat the cover is gorgeous! :)
"Fire with Fire" is the second installment of Penelope King's "Demonblood" series. I liked book one so much, that I just HAD TO buy this one and read it. And I wasn't disappointed one little bit.
A little warning here: This book has some adult content, not explicit, but nonetheless keep that in mind.
My review may contain some mild spoilers.
A couple of months have passed since handsome, loving Kieron left Lucky and Liora to finish his assignment with the Legionaire and thus win his freedom. He was supposed to be back, so the two - or well three - of them could be together forever, living their happily ever after.
But he's not back, and the girls are beginning to worry. Did he lie to them? Did he abandon them? Did he trick them in order to get his hands on the Amazea demons? All of these are sound reasons for his disappearance, and yet neither one seems right. Neither one feels right. Something else is going on but neither Lucky nor Liora know what.
Here is my full review of this amazing book.
Fire with Fire is the second book in the Demonblood Series. Having read and liked the first book I was happy to read the second as well.
The book starts after two months of where the last book ended. Keiron is out on a mission and hasn't returned yet nor has he communicated with Liora or Lucky. Liora is doubtful that Keiron will ever return to her. So when there's a new guy who shows some interest in her she can't help but return his affections. Lucky on the other hand is sure there is something wrong. She thinks that Keiron might be in some kind of trouble and is desperately in need of her help. And she might be right too.
The second book in the series goes deeper into Bones and Lucky's relationship. We come to know more about Bones past and what he means to Lucky. Tatiana's secrets are also revealed and some more about her past too!
I loved the ending. And cannot wait for the next book in the series!
There are some secrets that are better left unknown and some truths that shouldn't ever be told. Blood will be shed. Friends will be betrayed. Enemies will be unleashed. Dark secrets will be revealed. Love will blossom. Friendships will be tested.
I have just one word for this book. Fantastic!!! Penelope King continues to deliver with the second installment to this series. It has everything you could want in a story such as friendship, love , betrayal,twists and turns that will keep you guessing and an ending that will leaving you wanting more.
Fire with Fire begins two months after the last one left off. Keiron has been gone for those two months and has not contacted Liora/Lucky. They are both trying to deal with his absence in their own way. Lucky is seeking comfort from her best friend ,Bones, who holds a special place in her heart. Liora is attracted to a mysterious new student, Tristian, who starts school with his sister, Cassie. Strange things begin to happen to Liora/Lucky. Who can they trust and will they ever find true love and happiness?
This story, Like The Last One, grabbed my attention and did not let it go! At times I cried and other times I screamed at the book for choices that were made or things that happened. Thank God I was by myself! lol I highly recommend this book and will be anxiously waiting for the next installment.
I LOVED Fire with Fire this 2nd book in Penelope King’s Demonblood series and look forward to the further adventures of Liora/Lucky, Kieran, and Corinne.
Definitely not a standalone novel, the first book in the series, A Demon Made Me Do It, is a “must-read” before diving into this newest part of the story. Previous action is not re-hashed to bring a new reader up to the mark.
In this volume we get more information about the all-knowing and mysterious guardian, Tatiana. We get to spend some quality time with the delicious incubus/hellhound known as Bones. We meet more of the wonderful inhabitants of the dark world, Dryndara. And meet more evil beings - both supernatural and human.
The author slowly introduces us to and builds up the world of demonkind while the previous book gave us more detail on Liora’s human setting. King has successfully developed 2 distinct and interesting personalities for the main character(s): Liora – the human and Lucky – the demion.
As I said before, I can’t wait for Book 3!
I received this books as part of a review on behalf of the author after reading the first book in the "Demonblood" series. It is an interesting concept of two souls inhabiting the one body and such complete opposites where a demon girl and a human girl both fall in love with the same guy Kieron. It makes an interesting threesome to say the least.I am really enjoying this series so far and have become invested in the characters especially Liora/Lucky and Kieron though Bones was a personal favourite of mine too. The story is fast paced and action packed but there is enough romance to make it interesting and not too syrupy sweet. I look forward to reading about their next adventure.
Very good sequel! I enjoyed learning more about Lucky/Liora. What has happened to Kieron? Has he deserted her? Will she ever see him again? Something is happening to Lucky/Liora. She doesn't feel the same. She feels weaker. What could be causing that? To complicate matters, a new boy has started at Liora's school. He persists in being beside her. Tristan doesn't interest Liora.......in the beginning. Corrine begains to notice the changes in Liora.
Some of Bones and Tatiana's secrets are revealed in this book. We learn some of Bones history.
I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
I love finding a good book series, and this is DEFINITELY a great one! From page one I was so glad to see what my "old friends" were up to. I liked this book even better than the first in the series: "A Demon made me do it". So many delicious twists and turns I couldn't stop reading it. And just when I thought I knew what was going to happen, Bam! Something totally different happened. I cannot wait to read the next book!
***************SPOILER ALERTS**************
I really LOVED this series! I especially loved this book because we get to see a side of vulnerability in each of the characters which was great because I was a Liora fan but I think getting to know Lucky and her world more better, Fire with Fire has pushed me to the dark side :)
Awaiting Kieron's return Liora meets a charming new guy named, Tristan that now attends her school. Liora finds herself quickly drawn and falling for Tristan's charming ways, but at the same time Liora questions her trust in him. To the GOOD part, Lucky is badder than ever and with Kieron gone why not give Bones, her SEXY, HOTT wereboy a chance?(I would!) I love how we get to see more of thier relationship grow, I love them two together they really are the power couple in my book :). Lucky's world is under attack and theirs word that Kieron is involved and Lucky will stop at nothing to get him back, but is he in on it? Back in Liora's world Tristan is being very strange and she learns that she is in danger and he may have something to do with it...You'll have to read it and find out!
Penelope King has created a world that I would love to live in! I really wish that this series was more than three books because each book seems to get better and better. I;m ashamed to say that I was kind of happy that Kieron was gone lol, I like him and then I don't maybe because I want lucky to be with Bones. Speaking of that I love their friendship and the love they have for each other, it's so beautiful and I'm in love with their love story :) This book was awesome I can't say it enough and I can't wait for the next book becuase we get to see what happens next!
penelope King is such a great writer and I recommend this book to everyone that loves a good love triangle, sexy men, and a world of magic. MUST READ!
After reading A Demon Made Me Do It, I was also fortunate enough to receive Fire with Fire c: The fact that both books were given to me in exchange for honest reviews has not affected my ratings.
Like A Demon Made Me Do It, Fire With Fire still features the same kick-ass heroine Lucky and "good girl" Liora. Everything I loved about A Demon Made Me Do It - the charming plot, Bones, relationships, action - was basically almost all there. So yes, I did enjoy this book c:
One of the things that really grew on me was Liora/Lucky's relationship with Tatiana. To people like Corrine, Tatiana is described as their grandmother. Especially at the end, I found their relationship with Tatiana to be admirable, and was a little sad for them when
Another relationship that grew onto me (and I hope will develop more!) is with Corrine. I guess it's nice for Liora to have some "normal" friends, but I find the fact that Liora was willing to is promising and that of true friend. Hopefully, Corrine might also develop a friendly relationship with Lucky (there were hints of it in the epilogue!)
And Bones! I'm sad about what happened with him, especially since his relationship with Lucky was really developing :c If I say any more, it might completely ruin the book...
The only problems I had were:
1. I want more action! A lot of the book was
2. I want Liora and Lucky to sort out their feelings, as many others said. Lucky loves Bones. But she loves Kieron too! But wait, Liora likes Kieron, even though . Kieron sees Lucky make out with Bones (who But no! He still loves her (what a forgiving guy...). And wait! Liora . But again, Kieron forgives her amazingly easily...
But still, I can't wait for the third book!
Wow! Just…..wow! Penelope King did it again! This story is just amazing. As soon as I started reading this story, I couldn’t put it down. It was a real page-turner for me.
Young Adult is not a genre that generally appeals to me, but this series is unbelievable and I can’t wait to read the rest of them. I have to know what happens next. This series is a bit edgier than most Young Adult novels that I’ve read. I think that’s one of the reasons it appeals to me so much, on top of the fantastic writing! Liora/Lucky, Bones, and Kieron all are fascinating characters that really appeal to me. They all have their flaws and love each other in spite of them.
I found myself cheering them on as they fought through their battles, emotional battles as well as physical battles. I also found myself crying for Liora/Lucky as she hit her most despondent moments. I also found myself crying at the loss of a beloved character, even if I do understand the reason for it. I don’t like it, but I understand it. I only hope he comes back to us in a later book.
I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. I’m very curious to see what lies in their future. I am also very curious to see what Corinne’s role in all of this becomes. She’s been a periphery character up until now and I hope we see more from her in later books.
Unfortunately for now, I have to wait until the third book comes out. I’m eagerly awaiting it’s release!
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
The rescue does not go as planned Lucky and company are captured. Lucky is banished from Thiberoux along with Kieron. What does Tristian and Cassandra want? What about Bones? I have been chaffing at the bit to get my hands on this book since I read 'A Demon Made Me Do It' back in August. You can read that review HERE
I literally devoured Fire With Fire.
Which probably was a bad idea, as I missed things that I shouldn't have.
But hot damn....I was Bones deprived!!
I will freely admit to having a HUGE crush on Bones ;P
I've now had a chance to have a bit of a re-read and you will LOVE every single sentence, every word in fact, of this engrossing, thrilling, exciting, sexy, tear jerking love story.
Yes I said tear jerking.....BIG hint *you will need tissues*
Penelope King has yet again produced a most beautifully written book that will leave you gasping for more, more, MORE!
When will Book 3 be available?
I dont know.
What I do know is, I will be, I am chaffing at the bit for it already :)
Fire With Fire is most definitely a 5 Star read ~<;]
Book number two in Penelope King's Demonblood Series, Fire With Fire, definitely delivered! I completely devoured this book. Far too often, I find authors to be predictable. That cannot be said about Ms. King. As far as I'm concerned, this series is just getting better and better with each new secret that's exposed. The only downfall?? I have to wait until Summer to read the next book in this amazingly captivating series!
Once again, King delivers!
This one is a follow up to King’s debut novel, A Demon Made Me Do It centering around a fractured soul. Liora is human by day, and at sundown the demon that shares her body takes over leaving Liora unaware of the building tension in the demon world.
Again King takes us on a thrilling ride with more peril and more love, though not in the ways we necessarily expected. Her ending does not disappoint and leaves us hoping for a quick release of the third installment. --HK Savage, author/ editor, Staccato Publishing
I enjoyed this sequel to A Demon Made Me Do It, provided in exchange for review by Shut Up & Read and the author. There were some surprises and some twists that were not that surprising, but the story flowed very well and kept me reading way too late into the night! The hints at future plot points keep me looking forward to the next book. Kieron is still pretty boring, but saves the day in the end, I just wish he weren't so perfectly perfect. Thank you to Tt and Ms. King for the opportunity to read both books!!
