"A refreshing and offbeat take on the female detective." --San Francisco Chronicle SPECIAL DELIVERY For the first time in years, struggling freelance writer Liz Sullivan is headed home to Denver to visit her estranged family. No sooner does she arrive than her former husband's dead body is delivered to her father's front porch with a bullet between the eyes. Since Liz once tried to kill her violently abusive husband, the police assume she has finally succeeded. Her relatives are furious at this new disgrace, and only Liz's new, hard-won self-respect keeps her going, as she desperately tries to discover what vicious new shenanigans might have caused her ex's death--without causing her own. . . .
Lora Roberts was born and raised in Missouri, She's lived for twenty years in Palo Alto, California, where her two mystery series featuring homemaker/writer Bridget Montrose and vagabond Liz Sullivan take place. After doing newspaper work, public relations work, technical editing, and romances, She really enjoys writing mysteries.
I am still enjoying this series, but this book was objectively not as good as the previous. The murderer was obvious from the second time I met him, and I don't usually solve mysteries! Liz is also falling into a somewhat hackneyed will-they-won't-they pattern with neighbor and policeman Paul, and I am really hoping that in book #4, neither Liz nor any of her obnoxious relatives will be suspects.
Liz's backstory and emotional reactions to having been a misfit daughter and an abused wife seem realistic to me, and they add texture to the series. Her niece Amy's computer and investment skills combined with her goth makeup and clothing are a hoot.
Nice book. I enjoy reading about misfits outsider woman who went on their own way.
This book we get to know about Liz family and get to know about Liz's history. Her family is such a nuisance that you can't help want to punch them. When Tony died on Liz's family doorstep, family relations totally went off the hook , as if they didn't have prejudice against Liz already because of her going to jail . This book totally led me to believe Bliff is the one who did it but turn out its nice guy Kyle
And yet another great find in my mystery TBR stacks. While I have no clue why I always end up starting a series somewhere in the middle and not with book one, this fortunatelly rarely causes problems in following the story and also in this case the reader gets subtly filled in on previous events. With a really well drawn female lead, Liz Sullivan, who sets off to meet with her estranged family the story quickly develops into a who-dunnit in which Liz ends up as suspect for the murder of her shot ex-husband who's been dumped on her parent's front porch. Well written, this is a fast paced read, in which I especially liked the interaction between Liz and Eva, who's with the local police. Yet while I really liked the story, I would have wished for the whole plot to be a bit less foreseeable, but all in all a recommendable book nonetheless. In short: A suspenseful mystery novel that makes me want to read more of Lora Roberts books!
