Fire Riders #1

Taming the Fire

Rate this book
Paranormal Shape-shifter Menage

Against the backdrop of a war over land where battles rage every night, Byron and Callum came together in an inferno of lust and they've been happy together. One problem, though; Byron is a dragon rider who is nearing the age when his fire build up will be too much and he’ll be in danger of combusting. It doesn’t help that Callum is a dragon rider too and raises Byron’s fire instead of lowering it. Only one thing will ease the fires within Byron.

A human.

Mira has been just existing, trying to stay out of everyone’s notice. Only she finds herself fascinated by two dragon riders who don’t act like the others. It’s a dangerous interest, and she should know. Her parents died as a result of dragon rider actions. But she hasn’t escaped Byron’s and Callum’s attention.

When Byron and Callum decide she’s the answer to their problems, will she rise above her problems and prejudices and step into the dragon’s lair to tame Byron’s fire?

Growing up, I had a vivid imagination with lots of imaginary playmates and stuffed animals to keep me company. I even had crayon box adventures where the colors had a kingdom and tales to tell. And who says pink is a girl color? In my world, he was a prince.

From the time I could form my letters, this translated into fanciful writings from poems on eye shadow (I was six) to a story about an Island world I created with animals and people. Writing was something I always did.

But it never clicked. I drifted in and out of genres, mystery, animal stories, thrillers, toying with it, playing at it. I would finish some projects and store them away. It never occurred to me that this pastime could be my life's passion if I let it. Until my world collided with rediscovery.

As a teenager, I devoured books, especially romances but drifted out of the genre as an adult. On a weekend trip to the beach, I read four romance novels. I had a flash of inspiration. I could write these! Romance was where my heart lay. Within six weeks I had written my first romance novel.

I went back and revamped a thriller that I had written a few years before, making it a romance. And I became serious about my craft, trying to soak in all I could about writing. I began to write on a roleplay loop and the practice has been invaluable. I've cut my teeth there and learned what works in writing and what doesn't. And I've finally accepted who I am. A storyteller at heart, be it tales told to my children, an erotic piece about lovers or about a vampire looking for love.

So come with me and take a journey where, just like in my crayon box, things aren't always what they seem.

Byron and Callum are dragon riders, which is a misnomer because they actually turn into dragons rather than ride them. Every night from dusk till dawn the dragon riders take to the sky to protect and defend Eastania from the dragon riders of Wardona, their warring neighbors. Byron and Callum are happily mated and bonded for life. While some dragon riders mate other dragon riders, the species requires a human mate because after the age of maturity (25), sex with a human is the only way to reduce fire build up and avoid combustion. Enter Mira, a human. Mira lives a quiet life as a gardener. She despises dragon riders and blames them for the loss of her family. Her mother was a "dragon whore" who committed suicide after being rejected by the dragon riders and Mira's father eventually died of a broken heart, leaving Mira to fend for herself in an orphanage. Despite her loathing for dragon riders, Mira is fascinated by Byron and Callum who don't act like other dragon riders. Byron and Callum decide she’s the one and set out to seduce her. Mira eventually overcomes her prejudices and the three live HEA.

What I liked:
- Good story with an original storyline.
- the three characters were likeable and their personalities complimented each other.
- Mira's past issues with dragon riders made her character believable; I liked that the three had to work to overcome that obstacle.

What I didn't like:
- the book was too short for such a complicated plot and, therefore, there were a lot of loose ends.
- the sex scenes were kinda dull, which is sad because they could've - potentially - been hawt!

I'm a sucker for dragon shifters and this didn't disappoint. Byron and Callum are bonded dragon shifters who need to find their third before they spontaneously combust due to their internal dragon fire once they've reached their fast approaching 25th birthday. Only a human third can siphon off the heat. They both realize they might have met their third in Mira, a gardener, they just need to persuade her. It could have been longer but I enjoyed the story.

I'll be reading The Fire Within (Fire Riders, #2) by Mechele Armstrong next.

It was a good story, though we still don't know why they are called dragon riders when they are actual dragons.
I think that the book should have been a bit longer, I wanted a bit more explanation of the world but maybe that's explored more in the next two books...

Love can be all consuming like a raging fire, but in Bryon and Callum’s case they need love to tame the fire within.

What originally made me pick up this book was because it featured dragon shifters, Who doesn’t love a dragon shifter? The author not only met my expectations with her dragons but she exceeded them. This story fully included Bryon and Callum’s dragon side, even when they were in human form. I adored the way their dragon nature played a role in everything about their lives, from the way they scented others to the dynamic of their relationship. There wasn’t a moment in this story when I forgot what these men truly were and how dangerous dealing with a dragon can be.

Mira’s a human I really grew to love in this story. I particularly liked the way past affected her ability to accept Bryon and Callum as her mates. It brought a sense of honesty to the story because many of our pasts play such a vital role in who we are and the decisions we make in life. Another enduring quality I liked about Mira was her ability to rationalize her reality instead of relying in preconceived notions to make decisions. These qualities really made her a likable and sympathetic character.

While the story was good there weren’t any real surprises that would have made the story more memorable for me. I would have liked to have seen one or two scenes that really just blew me away. Instead, I got a consistently decent story. While that is in no way a bad thing, Ms. Armstrong wrote such a well developed story there was opportunity to really expand on who these dragon shifters are and possibly throw in an additional exterior conflict.

With comprehensive and catchy characters and an ability to stay true to the dragon shifter theme, the author was able to create a story I definitely recommend to others.

TAMING THE FIRE sets up a fascinating world with dragon shifters and their erotic relationships but I wanted more emotional resolution by novella's end.

The world of dragon shifters is excellent here. I love this well imagined world and can't wait to read other novellas in this series. I know other paranormal fans will like this world as well.

I like Bryon and Callum as they gently woo Mira to them. Their love for each other is also described well. But my complaint is that Mira doesn't have the emotional resolution with the men that I want. Yes, this is a perfectly erotic novella with some emotional intimacy but I wanted more commitment from Mira than the story offered.

I give this one 4.5 stars!

I loved it... This was the first time reading a story about dragons. I am officially hooked. I found this plot very good. Callum and Byron's love for each other is beautiful. I also liked how they felt for Mira. The characters felt so realistic to me especially the way they felt for each other. I feel the thing that disappointed me was that it ended quick, but definitely a good quick read :)

I thought the story was good, but for some reason I didn't like the way it was delivered. The dialogue was choppy. I didn't fall into the world that the author tried to build. I'm not going to give up on the series though. I'm going to read the next book n the series to see if it gets a little better.

Really enjoyed the story. A little bit like Bianca D'Arc's dragon stories which I also liked, but with more sex, which is great, but shorter, which was not great. I got the next one though and I'm so looking forward to reading it.

This could have been better if the book wasn't so short. The plot was too complicated for such a short book and that resulted in Mira's relationship with Byron and Callum being rushed.
