Lord of the Flies is one of those novels that earns its place as a must-read classic. While it isn’t one of my personal favorites, I can understand why it’s held in such high regard. The book explores powerful themes like inner turmoil, the fear of being truly on your own, and the struggle to maintain order without adults or clear rules. Golding shows how quickly society can fall apart when there’s no structure or guidance, especially among young people. Even if it’s not a book I’m deeply attached to, I appreciate the way it exposes the darker side of human nature and the chaos that can rise when control disappears.
That was intense! I chose this book because I’d never read it before and many of my students were reading it for their ELA class this semester. A little slow in the middle but, yikes, my heart was racing those last few chapters. What an intense story! I see why it’s used in literature classes.
