Gene A. Getz, (B.A., Rocky Mountain College; M.A., Wheaton College; Ph.D., New York University), a host and teacher of Renewal Radio, served as a professor at Moody Bible Institute and Dallas Theological Seminary. He has authored more than 60 books, including The Measure of a Healthy Church, Elders and Leaders, and the Men of Character series. He has been a church planting pastor in the Dallas metroplex since 1972 and now serves as President of the Center for Church Renewal and Pastor Emeritus of Fellowship Bible Church North in Plano, Texas.
I don't remember how I stumbled upon this book, which is a series of about 10 from the same author, but, boy, am I glad I did. Mr. Getz focuses on a great man from the Bible, Joseph, whose life story is predicated on faith. The things that Joseph goes through beginning with being sold into slavery by his brothers to being wrongly imprisoned after accusations of rape, can leave any sane person wondering why he never gave up on God, especially because of his innocence through it all. Backed of course with Biblical scripture and personal anecdotes, this book (and the others I've purchased) will help gain a deeper understanding to the "men of character" from the Bible that will no doubt help me in my walk with God. Five out of five stars.
Getz handles the basics, but the overall flavor of the book leaves a ‘self-help’ taste in my mouth. While Joseph characterizes much that Christians should emulate, it’s wrong to trivialize his life—and God’s providential design—into a ‘one size fits all’ example to stamp over any situation. Getz goes beyond this at times, but not nearly enough. To paraphrase M’Cheyne: it’s good to think of our ways, but it’s far better to think of Christ.
A blind woman, whom I read to, wanted me to read this book. While it is addressed to men, we both enjoyed the book. There were a lot of personal implications from the author, as he interjected his own feelings into the narrative. We both enjoyed the first chapter best, as you read it from Joseph's perspective.
