An Anthology of contemporary British prose poetry by writers such as George Szirtes, Luke Kennard, Carrie Etter, Andy Brown, Anthony Rudolf, Robert Vas Dias, Kate North, Richard Gwyn, Pascale Petite and Jane Monson. Compelling and elegant, Jane Monson has assesmbled a definitive anthology for this borderline form.
It's great for the sheer fact of being an anthology of contemporary British prose poetry as I haven't come across anything else that does this job. It's great for being a consciousness-raiser for, and a promoter of, the form. I'm glad this book exists and as a poet have used it as an encouragement to myself to sometimes write in this form. It contains an interesting array of uses of the form. There's considerable variety and in my opinion an at-least-interesting range of okay to inspirationally excellent poets.
This collection of contemporary British poems had its strong moments, but mostly the poems left me flat. Considering the UK's relationship with absurdist humor, I had hoped for more in the whimsical/fable/surrealist tradition of the prose poem, but much of the collection was pretty flat--both in sensibility and in musicality. A shame.
Read this prose poetry anthology as a set text for a creative writing module at university and thoroughly enjoyed the work in this collection - I'm certain I shall revisit this collection many times.
