Not best Gaiman's work ever, but Capullo's artwork saved the day.

Alan Moore's Violator was a far better spin-off of the 90s Spawn series, but if you are a Gaiman's completitionist, or wanna know more about Angela's character before her recent moving to Marvel, give a try to this volume.

This was absolute nonsense and it was wonderful.
Angels killing dragons for fun, banging demons, a weird cat butler thingy.
it was perfect.

While I did appreciate the art style of Todd McFarlane's "Spawn" series, I was never that big a fan of the story itself. Thus, I freely admit, the only reason I bought this volume from the used comic store was that I noticed these stories had been written by Neil Gaiman. As a Gaiman fan, I figured "Why not?".

While by no means is this a great comic, it is good for what it is. It's the story of Angela, an Angel that hunts Spawns, yes as in plural. She has run into the Spawn that we know and found him to be different. In this story, she has been set up by someone to take the fall for a crime she did not commit. Exiled from heaven and on the run from her fellow angels, she turns to Spawn for help.

The story itself is a two-star, even NG can only do so much with this plot. But the story plus the art were exactly what I expected. The art still has appeal. There is also an additional story about Angela fighting a pirate version of Spawn and some cool alternate cover art. All in all a three-star volume, but I think one would have to be a serious NG fan or a fan of the Mcfarlane Spawn series. But, seriously, don't expect too much. It is what it is.

I'll admit, while a fan of the original Spawn comics, the character Spawn was less of a troubled adult focusing on the boundaries of good and evil and more of a teen overblown with angst. At least in the beginning stages in which this comic was meant to take place (shortly after issue 9 I believe?)
What made the comics great was the rest of the cast. Sam & Twitch, Cogliostro, Violator, and of course Angela.

This comic was shorter than i'd have liked, hence the four stars. But Gaiman's story brought a life to the character Spawn that you wouldn't see for another fifty issues or so. Angela was also greatly developed from her first appearance to these short 3 issue comics. Another thing that irked me (but have come to understand, since it was early in the years where the Spawn art was barely taking it's own shape into awesomeness) was the art. It was amazing, but parts were a bit rushed it seemed/felt.
all in all a must read for the Spawn universe. though now I have to go back and reread the rest of the original Spawn series to really understand how the hell all of this affected him. Cuz if memory serves me right, whatever growth Spawn got from this series was pretty much thrown out the window and reverted back to angsty bitch. Then again same can be said for the series where they make progress than turn him back to angsty bitch. buuuuuuuuuuuuuuut that's a Spawn review not an Angela review.

P.S really hate the way Todd McFarlane treated Neil Gaiman's (and others)work, and pretty much ruined a relationship that could have brought these characters to a far better completion, had he not been such a dick. just a personal opinion that does not affect the review of either Spawn and Angela.

I was a never a big follower of Spawn -- until I stumbled upon the character of Angela, warrior angel. This book collects the three issues of the Angela limited series. I am glad, for this story deserved the respect of retelling in a high grade format. Plus, it certainly made me even consider reading a part of the Spawn story.

This is the mythic tale of Angela, heaven's foremost warrior for a hundred thousand years. No angel was was more decorated in the eternal battle against evil. Yet, this did not stop her arrest on the charge of treason- for pettyness and corruption had seeped into Elysium itself. To defend her, Angela's friends sought help from Al Simmons -- the most recent, and most reluctant of Hellspawn. Simmons was the only Hellspawn to ever defeat -- or escape -- Angela and only he could testify to her innocence in conspiring with Hell.

However, when Angela and Spawn last met, Angela was the hunter and Spawn her quarry; she the attacker and he on the defensive. They were an even match, neither able to best the other. Now, the tables are turned and Angela must ask her prey to defend her in a court where mercy is never an option. With her life at stake, can Angela trust and depend on the very enemy she tried to kill?

Did Marvel rip off this character? Because their Angela seems very much similar to this one. Well not for me I know everyone loves Spawn, but this was kinda blah for me.

This may be the least Neil Gaiman thing Neil Gaiman has ever written.

Also, Greg Capullo has come a long way.

Greg Capullo absolutely kills it with this 3-issue miniseries from 94-95, some of the prettiest comic artwork I've ever seen. Neil Gaiman's story of Angela's fall from grace in Heaven is also a lot of fun to read, but Capullo's artwork is just mesmerizing. The series is referenced extensively in the primary Spawn series, making it a must-read for fans. Capullo penciled a lot of the early Spawn issues, but Angela is crazy amazing even by those standards. To Gaiman's credit though, Angela was also one of the most interesting Image Comics characters and it blows my mind they sold her to Marvel. Shame it didn't work out between Gaiman and McFarlane. Damn shame.

This book is crucial if you are reading the main Spawn series and want to know what happened between him and Angela after they fought each other for the first time. That being said this book felt more like fan service and a way for Angela to branch off into other comics. It's not bad but it's very forgettable.

Pretty mediocre side story in the Spawn series. Surprisingly written by Neil Gaiman. The art is pretty typical. I did laugh when Spawn was asking why are all the angels babes. No one answered because the target demographic was teen boys, apparently.

As I worked my way through all of the Spawn issues from the beginning I was trying to avoid as many tie-ins as possible. However, the gap between issues 28 and 29 seemed so strange that I decided to read this series and I'm glad that I did. With tongue planted firmly in cheek Angela is everything that the main series should have been at this point and wasn't. We start off with high-tech angels fighting dragons on strange planets, end with a cat who takes care of a tower in hell and along the way we get plenty of smart, self-aware, dialogue. This book is definitely ahead of the main Spawn issues which were released around the same time (excluding the contributions of Moore and Morrison). If you're a fan of the series this book is not to be missed.

Yasssss queen!!!!

I loved this. Angela (previously seen in Spawn #9) is the bestest. She’s a fierce warrior huntress and she doesn’t take any shit. Long story short, she’s pure badass.

Greg Capullo’s art is so bomb diggity!! Every page. Seriously. All stunning, bright and intricate without bring jumbled a confusing.

I could tell that this was a labour of love. Neil Gaiman really fleshed this story out and gave it life.

Also... Al and Angela?? Yes! It’s hot.

This is a good fast read and anyone who loves Spawn will definitely love Angela!

A good mini series to show off Angela the Angel from Elysium. One of the best hunters, couriers and all around Hellspawn killer.
However the politics of being an Angel involve lots of rules and regulations especially involving going down to Earth. Angela, even know she always follows the rules is arrested for treason and all sorts. She must find out who set her up, with the help of her friends and Al Simmons (Spawn) she goes about uncovering the truth.
Also thrown in was a special free comic on original release which shows a Pirate Hellapawn which is pretty cool.

Looking back now with older, wiser, more discerning eyes, Spawn was really quite an angst-filled, repetitive slog. Thankfully, Gaiman's contribution is a breath of fresh air. Fun, fast-paced odd-couple romp through worlds and characters far more imaginative than McFarlane could ever come up with. Capullo does a decent job so early in his career, though the visual storytelling is lacking at times.

The second story really blows, though. Purely functional art and too much overripe dialogue.

This is one of those brilliant stories about the Hellspawn and his opponent the angel Angela. These two characters learn a lot about eachother and the place in their respective worlds they occupy. Natuaral enemies that learn to respect each other grudgingly. Great art and smart writing means that this is one of the must-read chapters of the SPAWN series.

A fun read, but very 90’s in style. Bewilderingly busy artwork and attractive female characters in unashamedly sexualised costumes. I like this character, though, and the rights issues that saw her evolving from a minor role in an Image title to becoming Thor and Loki’s long-lost sister and gaining her own series at Marvel fascinate me.

This story was written by Neil Gaiman??? Holy crapola, what a puerile mess!!! The plot is half-way good, but the dialogue is pure garbage. Spawn doing 90's humor, for crying out loud?! The Sandman, this story is not. The author probably wrote this failed romcom while taking a dump. I only read this because it was mentioned in the main Spawn series, but I now realize it added very little to the character. Feel free to skip it, unless you really get a kick out of watching half-naked warrior chicks.

This version is great because it adds the Angela Special.
The main issues are amazing! Great and lasting impact between Angela and Spawn, incredible artwork as Capullo comes into his own with the Spawn-verse, just exemplary all around!
The special is also nice, it harkens back to the mini (referring to Spawn and Angel's familiarity with one another) while showcasing a new Spawn (Cut-throat) that she encountered in the past. Just a nice, fun story with great artwork!
There is nothing that could have been done better with this collection, it is epic all around!

That was an amazing story. I read the whole thing in one sitting. Neil Gaiman is an incredibly talented creator. Spawn got a massive universe expansion in this issue, and the art and colouring were really good too.

I can see why there was such a fight over the character of Angela; I bet her action figure, especially her redesigned look, sold more than Spawn himself. It's too bad Todd McFarlan and Neil Gaiman did not work out their differences because an ongoing Neil Gaiman written Angela series would have been amazing.

This was...interesting. I only found out about it recently, and immediately hunted down the single issues. My favorite writer, on a comic with one of my favorite comic artists?

Well....I forgot how 90s some 90s art was. XD Still, it was well-drawn, just not my favorite style. And it was great to see Gaiman just have fun with a story. It wasn’t profoundly amazing a la Sandman, but it was a lot of fun.

I wanted to like this. It contains so many awesome ingredients, including Neil Gaiman!, Greg Capullo!, Spawn, Angela, Hell, angels! Mix this up in a bowl and bake me a story.

And yet, no. It just didn't work for me. Individually there were some fantastic parts, especially in the first issue. Then it just sort of fizzled into a confusing mess that I couldn't follow.

I know, I'm alone with this one: Gaiman is over rated. And because so many people love his work, McFarlane saw money pouring in when he cast Gaiman to do this one. And he did, quickly just to get it done.
Nothing good in this.

Нил Гейман красавчик. "Интимная сцена" очень круто расшатывает определённые представления, что, скорее всего, круто, чем не. Будет интересно посмотреть, что произойдёт с Анжелой дальше.

This was a fun side story to read, I'm glad I read it. Not a necessary read if for the main Spawn story. The additional Pirate Spawn comic was amazing.
