Merlin Fanfic In which Arthur attempts to teach his knights, his knights attempt to woo Merlin and Arthur is definitely not jealous.... Words: 73,565 complete
The beginning was slow for me and it took me awhile to get into this. Honestly, if it hadn't been a buddy read I probably wouldn't have kept reading but I'm glad I did. Once I got to the part of where the knights are trying to woo Merlin, I started to really enjoy it. It was funny and sweet and I loved all the magic stuff.
Thanks to my BR buddies Jen, Meags, R, Meep & Rosa!
No ifs, ands or buts about it, I love, love, love my Merthur in Camelot, with the Knights and for sure with the magic.
This was a very entertaining read. By getting all of the various characters POV you would think it would have been distracting but it wasn’t. I felt it just added so much to this story. Each character had a unique personality that would have been totally missed if the author didn’t give each of them a voice. Well done. Although this isn’t a romance in the “get it on” sense, it was for sure to me romantic. It was more of a story showing the foundation of what will be an amazing romance and I was really ok with just getting that story and not any of the “getting it on” parts. Of course they are always missed, and it did happen…off page…but there was enough of everything else that I felt fully satisfied at the end of the story.
Oh, and the Knights? They were hysterical. Their love for Arthur was just so overwhelming. Their scheming was brilliant. They added so much to this story.
So, I think you should read it. I liked it quite a bit.
This was seriously a sweet Merthur, and I really enjoyed it.
Part farcical comedy, part historical yarn, this flowed smoothly with plenty of funny and smart barbs, quips, and retorts.
The common theme of Arthur forever trying to atone for his father's faults features prominently, as he strives to be better than Uther, determined to forge his own legacy. He is just and protective of not only his friends and family, but of all those that fall under his care - a responsibility that he takes deadly serious. Happily that also includes Merlin.
Here, Arthur's knights play matchmaker and the ensuing shenanigans open both his and Merlin's eyes to the depth of their feelings. Truly a simple romance that again, hints at the epic destiny these two will create and share. And I really, really need to find a fic that shows such an evolution of their partnership.
This fic was very different to what I was expecting, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
I particularly liked the characterization of all of Arthur's knights. Their constant banter and well-intentioned scheming to bring Arthur and Merlin together, was well executed and highly entertaining.
There's a lot of pov changes which may work for you but left me feeling unfocused. I only got to part four before giving up - what put me off was the moralizing; Arthur's talks with his knights and Hector to show off his great tactical mind were too much, they set a heavier tone than the fic warrented.
4,5 Stars Normally I don't really go for stories that jump between different POV so much, especially when it's between more than just two people. Nether do I read stories where the main characters are pondered upon by 'side' characters. It was my luck that the summary on fanfic.net didn't mention any of these things that could have kept me from reading this wonderful piece of work (seriously, I probably would've shrugged, said nah and moved onto the next fic, most likely with about five POV's less, a few ratings higher and a dissatisfactory writing style). How many fanfics are out there where you learn a great deal about your two favourite characters, but are as clueless about any other characters, especially OC's, as if the author had simply written 'he had brown hair and was quite likeable' and been done with it? More than enough, right? Wouldn't it be nice for a change to have a story with three dimensional OC's you come to know and love? Well, it's your lucky day! You don't have to look far, only far enough to see the link to stakeclaims's fanfic at the end of the summary. But not to worry, in favour of building believeable OC's the author didn't neglect our most beloved characters. Merlin and Arthur are as endearing and stupid as in the show, just with a bit more Merthur at the end. (This is beginning to sound like a bad product promotion) This is a story where you can sit laughing in front of your computer, smartphone or whatever device you read it on with a spike of action at the end that will give you feels (don't worry, only a few awww-my-poor-Merlin ones). Summarised: It'll be your loss if you don't read it
This story was mildly annoying and mostly boring up until ~ 50% of the whole thing. Then it began to be more interesting and the characters became deeper. Unfortunately, the ending came too fast (especially after such a start) and I just expected way more.
The story also gave too many references to the past that not all readers necessarily know and it definitely wasn't explained well. Arthur was also a prat and really didn't get much better...so not much for character development either.... It was sad, because towards the end, you can tell that the author CAN write an interesting story, I just wish it lasted longer than those couple "pages".
The knights of Camelot decide that Arthur needs a companion in life and love, and Merlin is perfect. This assertion does waiver when they find out Merlin’s big secret, but it all works out in the end.
Why 3 stars? I didn’t gel with the characterisation of Merlin. He was too clumsy, not good with horses... I know it doesn’t sound much but he wasn’t the character that I loved from the TV show. That said there are some truly lovely moments between Arthur and Merlin in this fic, so if you are a Merthur fan, you will enjoy it.
The Knights were the focus of it all and I loved how they were developed and portrayed, each with his own personality. I think the best character was Arthur and the way he was working to get his Knights to understand the importance of their vocation. The romance was lovely!
I just regret that the author wrote the fic before Gwaine was introduced to the TV series!
2.5 stars The last few chapters were good, and a teared up a bit, so that's why I rounded up to 3 stars. But I skimmed through a lot of the weird immature "girly" knight chatter through the earlier chapters.
It was sweet and the knights made me cry with laughter. I enjoyed it a lot, and you learn to love the side characters just as much as you will love Merlin and Arthur.
OMG what a funny and nice fic! I read it instead of doing my calculus exercises and I don't regret it! Honestly, I like when a story has a great friendship between the characters, and this story has it! The knights were close to each other and what they did at the end just proved how much they cared for Arthur and Merlin too.
I also liked the fact that Merlin and Arthur's relationship was full of funny remarks, sarcasm and love!
Wooooooh!!! A great book about the Merthur. How two people love each other but cant take the last step. How the knights decided to help bring them together. The playful banter. The numerous knights each with his personality, a personality to kill for. And the ultimate crisis. The unity of knighthood.
