The rogue Hercules aircraft, a giant veteran American transport plane, will be taking off from Karachi airport illegally. She is improperly certified and outrageously over-loaded; her flight plan is spurious, her cargo illicit and her destination criminal. Carrying a shipment of arms to Rhodesia, Captain Martin Gore knows that he will be unable to make any stops on this last and most dangerous leg of the journey along the hostile east coast of Africa. These are the known dangers, and they are enough to make Captain Gore very nervous indeed - nervous enough to take the boss's girlfriend along as hostage and insurance of payment.
Martin Gore is the pilot of a Hercules aircraft loaded with missiles and weapons bound for Rhodesia, against international law. Literally flying by the seat of his pants, he and his co-pilot Harry and engineer Stubbles endure a flight plagued with danger, double-dealing and death. The recurring problem of an empty fuel tank is the least of their concerns. There is technical information but it didn’t stop the flow or my understanding of the situation. Plenty of twists that keep the tension up high and, like the crew, keep you guessing all the way to the end. Lots in there - mafia, politics, KGB - to keep you entertained .
I liked the sound of the story, but the style was tiresome for me and the content and characters not at all interesting. There are so many brilliant books out there I won't waste time on those that do not get my attention.
