About the author

In 1994, Brenda Jackson’s first novel, Tonight and Forever, was released. Since then she has had more than 100 novels and novellas published (the first African-American author to accomplish such a feat) and has over 3 million books in print.

A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Brenda is the first African-American author to have a book published by Harlequin Desire and the first African-American romance author to make the New York Times and USA TODAY bestseller lists within the series romance genre.

This was my first Brenda Jackson read and although I didn't love this story, I certainly enjoyed her writing style enough to consider trying more from her in the future.

To be up front, my problems with this story are mostly of my own making and I own them as such.

Firstly, this is book #25 in a bigger series, and for those who know me you can probably already imagine just how much my personal lack of background knowledge and understanding affected my reading experience. You see, my stupid library app pimped this as book one of a trilogy, so I dived in unknowing - turns out, it's kind of meant to be a smaller trilogy within a bigger series, so I get where the confusion lies. I mostly blame myself though, because I usually do my GR research with new-to-me authors/series and I obviously forgot that part of my process this time around. Whoops-a-daisy!

So, aside from the frustration of reading a story where practically every character mentioned has clearly been around for years, many of whom have had their own focus love stories already, I also forgot that I really struggle with the often far-fetched - AKA infuriating - plot devices used in Harlequin romances. Again, this is on me, guys.

I straight up need to spoiler tag the rest of this review because I'm going to get hella ranty and ruin the plot. So, BEWARE!!

Basically, Channing and Zane were a couple in the past, but when Channing realised that Zane wasn't capable of loving her - his words, not mine - she broke up with him and moved away. Now, years later, she's back in town for a work thing and as far as Zane knows Channing's engaged to someone else.

This, for me, is where shit initially got dicey.

Zane purposefully seduces Channing to make her see her fiance (who is a fake-fiance BTW) isn't worthy of her. I could have been okay with this douche move if he'd then wanted her back, but he didn't. Nope, he still craps on about not loving her and how he never will. WHAT!? Assholes-R-Us up in here, y'all!

So, then poor Channing is all heartbroken and leaves town, again, and it's in among all the verbal smack-downs Zane receives from his kick-ass sisters (I'd totes read their stories) that he finally realises that maybe he is in fact in love with Channing. Duh! So the arrogant douche finally pulls his head out of his ass and goes after Channing.

Shockingly, it's what comes next that is actually the crux of my issues with this plot.

When Zane finds Channing he quickly confesses his love...but she doesn't believe him. I totally got her reaction because if you're told over and over how unlovable you are, at some point you're gonna start believing the jackass who said that to you.

Zane's brilliant (see: nonsensical) idea to solve his new dilemma is to then backtrack and tell Channing that, in fact, he was mistaken, and that he doesn't love her but he could love her, and that he would only need a "push" from her and maybe it will become love. Say f*cking what!?!

Apparently the idea of "pushing" Zane into loving her is just what Channing needed to hear, and the two begin dating again, growing closer and closer - AKA having more and more sex - until they finally get past all their communication issues and rubber stamp their (ridiculously unsatisfying) HEA.

Anyhoo...

As I said, this was my first read from the esteemed Mrs. Jackson, and although I had a dicey reaction to this particular romance plot - meaning I straight up disliked it - (surprisingly) doesn't mean I wouldn't be open to trying more of her works at a later date. I'll just do my research better next time, I promise.

There are some days when a girl picks up a book and she wants to get a good romance.
What does this involve you ask? Well everyone is different, but for me the below ingredients help.
Ingredients
A huge dollop of stubborn man, who doesn't believe in love.
A pint size girl who sticks to her guns, and doesn't settle for less.
A dash of nosey interfering family. (not to much, it can interfere with enjoyment.)
A pinch of jealousy.
A whole load of seduction and steam (if done well, to much is never enough)

The result? A happily ever after for everyone !!!!

Zane by Brenda Jackson is a wonderfully satisfying romance. It contains all these ingredients with the added benefit of having a storyline that flows. I wasn't expecting it to be as steamy as it was, but phew Zane seduced me and Channing, so everyone was happy.
I am glad I had the opportunity to read this book, as I will be checking out more of this series. ( I believe this is book number 24) Although this is not the first book in the series I was at no point lost, in fact it flowed very well. Not to long, in fact just the right length for a lazy afternoon read :)

Brenda Jackson writes a wonderful series about a family.. The Westmorelands and there are plenty of them to write about.. A fun loving, strong loving family where the ties that bind do.. Zane's book is about a man who lost the love of his life and didn't even know it..

Channing Hastings loved Zane Westmoreland.. totally and completely. Sure she knew going in that he didn't do love. that he was the original good time boy. But she thought their relationship had a chance. That he was different with her. When she realized that he would never love her.. she left.. moved away and got on with her life. But now she is back in town for business and is wearing a sparkling diamond engagement ring.. While she doesn't want to see Zane she is living her life on her terms..

Zane Westmoreland is something of an idiot.. a sexy good looking idiot.. One who loves his family dearly but still an idiot. He had the woman of his dreams and didn't even know it.. when she left he kept a keepsake box for pete's sake.. He even takes it out and goes through it periodically.. too bad he will never love her.. *rolls eyes*. Now that Channing is back he wants to "clear the air" and make sure she is happy.. His way of doing so is just dumb.. Not gee Ms Jackson is writing a dumb story (nope she writes a brilliant one) but gee Zane is an idiot dumb.

This wasn't a comedy or even a comedy of errors but this book made me smile. I loved watching Zane muddle his way through to discovery. I enjoyed watching his family, the family that always stands together, come down on him. I enjoyed watching the lightbulb come on and yes I enjoyed watching him grovel. Ms Jackson again does a brilliant job of writing here.. We don't dislike Zane, we like him. His family is not mean just angry and worried.. and best of all none of the writing is mean spirited but it does share a tendency that many of us have seen. Either in ourselves, a family member, a friend or yes someone we loved..

I am planning on going back and finding all of Ms Jackson's Westmorelands and am looking forward to the next two books about Canyon and Stern...

This is the first book from author Brenda Jackson that I have read. Brenda draws the reader into the storyline from page 1. The characters are written realistically and may remind you of people you know. As an adult fiction book, it does not need to rely on the 'steamier" scenes to hook the reader. The relationships between Zane and Channing and Zane and his family reminds us what life is all about... family.

Zane Westmoreland is a horse rancher from Arizona and a member of a very prominent family where he is deemed the "expert" on woman. He is one that no woman has walked away from until Channing Hastings does just that after not being able to continue the type of relationship that they had and she moves to Atlanta. This throws Zane's world in a tale spend but he refuses to admit it until his actions show just that when Channing returns and is engaged. Zane knew of her pending return and thought things would change for the better with them and with the new wrinkle and some things he witnesses, he sets out to prove to her that she should not marry that man....and ends up confronting his own feelings.

I don’t like second chance romances and Zane’s personality literally just flipped. There was no growth. I would have DNF’d if I didn’t need it for my ABC challenge.

I know this books is part of a series but I didn’t like reading from a POV that wasn’t the FMC or MMC.

Zane is the 25th book about the Westmorelands, but the 1st book in the specific Westmorelands trilogy by Brenda Jackson. It is my first book of this series, however. Starting this late in the series didn’t affect me in the slightest. I never felt like I was missing out on some inside story or anything. I could tell it was mid-series, however. There was some reference to other characters and how they handled their own stories of love, but it helped more than making me feel left out.

Zane Westmoreland is the love ‘em and leave ‘em type. He’s never made any secret of it. He’s always had his family and there is no shortage of female opinion and general meddling there. When it comes to his personal life he keeps it simple – a few fun dates, great sex and nothing more. There has only ever been one woman that got under his skin and she left him. Left him, for the love of god. No one leaves Zane Westmoreland. Surely, that’s the only reason he hurt so much after she left and no woman has been able to add up since. Now, she’s back in town and he decides to clear the air by confronting the tension head on. Not only is the spark still there, but Zane is starting to think maybe a forever after isn’t such a bad idea. Unfortunately, he’s made such an impression spouting his “I’ll never love you” philosophy that he has a lot of convincing to do.

“I know about women, yes. But with the one woman I should have known about and should have handled with the love and respect she deserved, I blew it.”

Channing Hastings has tried to deny her feelings for Zane for way too long. One dinner with him and she finds herself barely clothed and bent over the table. Great sex? Yes, but definitely not healthy for her psyche, especially when he explains that he was making a point. They were made for each other – the conversations are great and the sex is off the charts – they could go right back to where they were. Does he love her or willing to make a commitment? No, but why is that so important to her? It’s fun now! Channing can’t take it and now recognizes that she just needs to face it that she’ll always love him, but she can’t trust herself around Zane, so she leaves town immediately. To her surprise Zane follows and is now spouting words of love. Does he think she’s that stupid? One doesn’t just wake up and decide they love someone after all that time. But, fine she’ll bite. She’ll let Zane hang around and prove he loves her, meanwhile she’ll protect her heart from what she knows is coming.

I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read more of this trilogy. The Westmoreland family is so fun and close. I’m sure that Canyon’s story will be just as sweet, sexy and entertaining.

Good book. Zane and Channing had been together for nine months. He had made it clear at the beginning that he doesn't do commitments, he doesn't fall in love. Even though Channing felt there was more to what he felt for her, when he refused to consider a future she cut her losses and left him. Two years later she comes back wearing another man's ring. Even though he still is anti-commitment he doesn't want her with anyone else.

I liked Zane though he was certainly frustrating. He likes women - a lot. He has frequent relationships though they are all short and he makes sure that they know he doesn't "do" love. His time with Channing had been different. He still refuses to commit to a future but he found himself treating her differently than anyone else. He frequently reminded her that he doesn't fall in love and is stunned when she finally gives up on them and leaves. When she comes back he gets the brilliant idea of showing her that he's the only man for her but still insists on his unwillingness to love. This time when she leaves he finally starts to realize that maybe there's something to his feelings after all. It took a conversation with one of his brothers for him to realize that his refusal to love was a way to protect himself from a loss like the one when his parent and anunt and uncle died. I wanted to smack him when he got to Channing and announced that he loved her and expected everything to be okay. Really? After months of telling her he doesn't love she's supposed to believe he suddenly loves her? I'm so glad she didn't cave in. I loved watching him grovel and have to do things that showed how he had changed. I love the closeness of the Westmoreland family and how they support each other. I also loved the scene when Zane's sisters tore into him over the way he had treated Channing.

I really liked Channing. She was independent and knew what she wanted. She loved Zane and felt like he had feelings for her even though he was still insisting he doesn't. When she finally had enough she moved away. She had to come back for a seminar and pretended an engagement to try to protect herself. When Zane confronted her about it and insisted she was his but still wouldn't promise a future she fled again. She was stunned when he showed up and suddenly started claiming that he loved her. She figured he was just saying it because he still wanted her physically. I loved the fact that she didn't just accept his declaration. I liked the way she slowly began to accept that his love might be real as he opened up to her more about his life and his feelings. There was a brief relapse on her part but the ending was certainly dramatic.

Have you ever read Brenda Jackson books? In particular, the Westmoreland series? If you have, then you won't need to think too hard to work out the plot in Zane. . But, like with all of Jackson's books, there's substantial sizzling sex in there to keep you interested if the plot doesn't cut it for you.

Zane Westmoreland was the sort of man who loved women and loved sex. Due to previous loss in his life however, he feared ever falling in love. But, one woman had slipped through the cracks. One woman, who also left him, when he convinced her that he was incapable of love, incapable of more.

To Channing Hastings, passion and love were synonymous, but after being scarred by the rejection of sexy and incredibly virile, Zane, self protection and a locked heart was her new strategy. Until he came back for her.

The story told in third person, of Zane and Channing, was moving, filled with hot sizzling, sensual scenes, that will get the blood boiling from the intensity. The storyline flowed nicely with just a touch of tension, and made for a quick read. Although we were promised a smokin' hot cowboy, we didn't see Zane shirtless out in the paddock! Shame. :-) Don't worry - there was plenty of Zane shirtless, so all is not lost.

Jackson has a delectable prose when describing her lovers' scenes.

Craving her taste in a way he never had before, he grasped her thighs and slid his tongue inside. She sucked in a breath, and he sucked on her, fastening his mouth to her most sensitive spot with no intention of letting go until she screamed his name.

This is the first book in the new series, and well worth the read if you have already begun the journey of the Westmorelands. Canyon's story has been introduced ready to maintain reader interest as the next reluctant Hero to find love in the following book in the series.

2.5 Stars not quite a 3 star story

Average story, average romance, average characters (I dint feel a connection or a want for them to be together)

This story wasnt bad at all but it wasnt exciting or a real page turner for me. I got confused a few times as it jumped from different character narratives and I found the scenes skipped as the last scene wasnt roundly ended.

The characters are nice and have their issues and everything was resolved without questions for me so thats a definate plus, I can see with all the family that this series could go on for a while. This can be read as a stand alone though to me I dont believe you have to read any of the others first to get this story as it explains a all of the questions that would come up.

Ive never read any from this series or author before and I can see why I never would have picked it up as its a cowboy story, but I wanted to try something new thought I'd give it a go. I wasnt so much dissapointed but I dont see me returning to this series.

The love scenes were hot and I feel the story relied a little too much on the spice to keep it going which isnt necessarily a bad thing, but as a reader I need more.

So if your looking for a quick little sexy story without any attachment to charaters or series this is for you.

The Westmorelands are always Alpha male,always tall drinks of water and always very easy on the eye. Well in this Westmoreland tale, Zane(hero) is shocked when Channing (heroine) walks away from him without a second glance. So when he learns that she's engaged... oh no way, Zane sets himself on a mission to make Channing his and boy does he do it with that Westmoreland style.
So he too, will be just another Westmoreland down for the count.

I don't have enough words to write how disappointed I was in this book.

Attention authors!!! It is not romantic for the hero in a romance novel, or any novel, to have sex with a woman (or in this case, a ho!) on a table in a public restaurant. It is disgusting.

But I am grateful that this disgusting act took place very early in the story, so I didn't have to waste much time reading this book.

Honestly, this is a case of "It's not you [the book], it's me." I'm not much of a category reader, but my library only had a few of Jackson's titles to try so I went with this one anyway. Also: jumping into a series like this is never a great idea.

There wasn't anything BAD about the book, but it didn't hit all my "yay!" buttons, does that make sense? However, I liked Jackson's writing overall and will try another from her, perhaps one that better fits my mood / theme preference. :)

I'm being generous with a 3-star rating, all because I liked the ending!

Zane and Channing story had its issues for me, Zane being a bit of a douche, and the restaurant table sex... He improved through the book, but still thought too much of himself in my opinion.

An ok read but Channing could have done better, even if he was a demon in bed!

Brenda Jackson is one of those authors whose characters are alive and well in her head, and in the case of the Westmoreland family, they continue to come to life and please her readers enormously. I have long ago stopped trying to keep them all straight, am mildly familiar with family members who pop up in stories, but don’t much worry about whose kids they are or how they are all connected. Suffice it to say that I have enjoyed all the episodes in this family’s life experience and will probably continue to do so.

Zane is a man who loves women but that’s where it stops. He has never really loved a woman and has been the kind of man who brings a relationship to an end before it gets too involved. However, there is one woman who piques his interest, whose involvement in his life went on for far longer than is usual, but whose honesty about what she wanted for her future caused her to simply pick up and walk away, broken heart and all.

Now Channing has returned and the fact that she is engaged to another man brings out the worst in Zane and he pulls some stunts that are pretty low, even for him. However, I will say that the author has crafted a character in Zane that is a mixture of free-for-all love and honorable man, even though the honorable part seems to get smothered pretty routinely. He is professionally successful and seems prepared to live alone for the rest of his life, but Channing’s new love interest throws him off his romantic and emotional stride. Thankfully, Zane has some family members who are willing to help him see himself honestly and it’s perhaps the best part of this story to watch the changes that Zane knows he must make if he expects to win back a woman of quality and substance like Channing.

I make not bones about the fact that there has seldom been a Brenda Jackson story that I haven’t liked. Perhaps that makes me easily pleased, and there is no hiding the fact that there are some of her books that are fairly predictable. Every author seems to have some sort of formula, and in many of her stories the hero is a man of affluence who has either been hurt or who just refuses to make a commitment. But even so, it is still fun to read how these stalwart and determined bachelors fall victim to women who are not only beautiful externally, but are women who bring an inner beauty to the relationship, the kind of authenticity that demands and authentic response from the man in their lives. So it is in this novel and that’s what makes it for me.

I’ve read Harlequin stories for decades and no one will argue that their short novels of the past were pretty predictable. Yet Ms Jackson’s writing is honest in expressing the realities of human relationship, the pain and sizzle, the flaws and joys, and most of all, she never backs away from the heat that two very sexual beings can generate. I very much appreciate that she has showcased the lives and loves of people of color and brought their experiences into the mainstream of romantic fiction. I know that her determination to do so has inspired other writers to craft interracial romance fiction and we, the reading public, are richer for their efforts.

This is a very nice read–not too long but very hot, and one that romance fiction readers will enjoy. I give it a rating of 4 out of 5.

I do love those hot, alpha Westmoreland men! Ms. Jackson's latest Westmoreland tale is Zane. It's the beginning of a new trilogy of the Denver Westmorelands. This story has all the elements of a great romance, passion, jealousy, angst, misunderstandings and fear of commitment.
Zane is a typical Westmoreland bachelor. He loves lots of women and hates the idea of giving up his freedom. These men fight hard against love and marriage but when they fall, they fall hard. Zane makes sure he lays down the rules to each woman he becomes involved with. He does not believe in love. It is truly enjoyable watching Zane go down for the count. Channing our heroine is absolutely the perfect woman for Zane. But after nine months of exclusive dating between her and Zane, Channing has fallen in love and decides to broach the subject of a future with Zane. He tells her, he's not in love with her. Channing is heartbroken, so she packs up and moves to Atlanta, deciding to dump Zane, before she gets dumped. She returns to Denver 2 years after her breakup with Zane with another man's engagement ring on her finger. This is where the fun starts as Zane is determined to prove to Channing that her fiance is a womanizing ass who doesn't deserve her. He quickly seduces her to prove his point. After all, no way would Channing give herself to Zane if she loved another. After a hot session of lovemaking on top of a table in a restaurant, Channing feels like the worst kind of fool as Zane quickly tells her that he does not love her but he doesn't want to see her get hurt by her fiance.
She walks out of her job assignment and once again flees Denver, hoping to never see Zane's face again. Zane, unable to function without her, chases her down and is prepared to do whatever it takes to get Channing back to Denver and back in his bed, for good. Zane is an exciting, and passionate journey to love and happily everafter. I give it 4 stars.

I started this series a few years ago, but never managed to read them all. I had no idea the Westmorelands had released 24 already, but that’s beside the point because you can read them as stand alone. The other couples are mentioned, but nothing to serious about and the main focus is always the couple leading the book.

This book is about Zane Westmoreland and he’s super hot with cowboy boots and a hat, but there’s more to him than just that. He loves his family and until a few moments before only his family, but now Channing is back and he discovered that she’s perfect for him.

The thing is Channing is so over waiting for Zane that she decided to move on. So now Zane is crawling after her and trying to make her understand that he’s in love with her. Channing wasted a long time suffering because she loves him and wants more than just a fling, but Zane has a string of woman and now is really difficult for her to just accept he changed.

I really liked Zane crawling because he showed a fun and sweet side of a cowboy, plus they went in a few dates so things went back to normal couple dating. These two are super cute together.

It’s funny how the Westmoreland men think they are always in control of their relationships, that until Brenda Jackson pulls out her cupid bow and the females take command. It happened just that way in this sizzling story with Zane and Channing. Mr. Zane repeatedly tells Channing that he does not love her and will never fall in love but cupid threw her arrow and he went down for the count.

Channing has always loved Zane but it took him losing her to someone else for him to realize that he was in love with her. As I was reading this story I felt Mrs. Jackson was truly giving relationship tips while at the same time engrossing you into a sensual love story. It reminded me of a how to love someone advice column. Although I would title it “Think Like A Woman and Man Up! Thank you Mrs. Jackson for getting Zane in the love lane. I really enjoyed this story it was full of sensual content, an adoring courtship with plenty of advice on finding love and appreciating love.

Well, another one falls to the Queen of Romance pen; one more Westmoreland falls in love!

Great job Mrs. Jackson. I enjoyed it.

A Westmorland man. Need I say more?
The sizzling heat between the characters threatens to set the book aflame.
I havent met a Westmorland man that I didnt like.
Zane is the one who thinks he is the best and no one can resist. Well he is one of the best but when Channing resists and moves away he couldnt believe it. He thinks he gets over her and then she up and moves back into town, ENGAGED!!!!!

He then is going to 'save' her from a womanizing man who wont treat her like she deserves to be treated. The struggle he endures with himself is well written and you really kinda feel sorry for him,

Its nice to see a nice guy put in his place and then brought back up to the great person he is.

I am always a fan of a Westmorland Man. So I have to give it a 4.5. Not sure what I would change to get it to a 5 but this is pretty darn close.

I love it when the Westmoreland men say they are "Bachelors 4 Life." Here's another one that has bitten the proverbial dust. Zane Westmoreland, a devout bachelor, or so he thought was in denial that Channing Hastings, (the one who almost got away) was his match made in heaven. Love the chase, the capture and the happy ending. Kudos to Brenda Jackson for another spectacular Westmoreland story. A really great read.

This was a decent read 3.5 star rating....Zane and Channing had a relationship that should have lead to more but when the time came to step up and make Channing his Zane choose to step aside and let Channing leave only to come back engaged.......The chemistry between Zane and Channing was NOT as HOT as I would have liked but still had a few heated scenes....

Loved It, Loved It, LOVED IT!! Zane and Channing are a hot couple. You cannot escape the attraction. I truly enjoyed this book. It is hot, sexy, and proves that a man will go after the woman he wants despite some miscommunication. Again, a wonderful love story that had to be told.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you get this book, you will not be disappointed *****5 star Read!!

BJ does it again, another steaming Westmoreland book. It took Zane long enough to realize he wouldn't be whole without Channing. I can't wait for Canyon's story next month.
