Simon Christopher Francis Furman is a British comic book writer who is best known for his work on Hasbro/Tomy's Transformers franchise, starting with writing Marvel's initial comic book to promote the toyline worldwide, as well as foundations for both Dreamwave Production's and IDW Publishing's takes on the Generation 1 minifranchise.
I love an underdog story and the UK Marvel team definitely had to be more innovative in how they told their stories around the main US title. I think it led to overall better tales with more character development and thoughtfulness. I enjoyed the "about the stories" section where the writers are interviewed. I can only imagine being given the task of introducing all four Gen 2 combiner teams in one 12 page issue!! They were living on a prayer back then. I have thoroughly enjoyed these collections.
These stories are even better than the ones in the first volume, and again, the packaging is worth five stars alone. The amount of supplementary material is exhaustive and fascinating.
It’s surprising reading back through these, how much of the Transformers’ stories that I remember and loved were actually from the Marvel UK creative team. Simon Furman wrote some of the most memorable moments, Buster vs Frenzy, Dinobots Hunt, Centurion. Just what was Transformers US doing?
This is a very enjoyable volume with some fun extras. A few text stories thrown in for good measure, but mostly comic book stories here. Lots of behind the scenes content with a few essays about the UK comic. TFUK is just as good or better than its US counterpart. The art, while not spectacular at times, is overall pretty decent. Recommended for fans of Transformers.
