I read the excellent The Rose Code recently (by Kate Quinn) and particularly enjoyed the fact that it was based on characters that actually lived and worked at Bletchley Park. One of the source books that Kate Quinn used for inspiration was The Road to Station X, featuring the memoir of a debutante called Sarah Baring, so I tracked down this memoir and was so glad that I did. It’s only a little book with short chapters…but what a life it depicts! Sarah’s world is one that doesn’t exist any more but what she did during WW2 is simply fascinating. Her writing is warm, witty and entertaining and it really brings Bletchley Park to life. I think this book should be on GCSE reading lists to give an insight into a woman’s role in the war; kids today would not believe what Sarah got up to and how women were treated!
