Story - 3.25 stars

I liked this one but didn't love it as much as I loved the previous books. I felt like I was missing a huge chunk of the story, especially when it came to Liam and Oliver's past.

I wish this was just Liam and Oliver's story. Jamie and Kyle's POV was unnecessary here, they should have gotten a short story or something, I felt disconnected. Oh yeah and My Alexei was missing.

Jamie and Oliver had some sexual chemistry which was good, the mystery was okay. The other parts I felt was just telling and not showing.

Overall, it was an okay read. i liked some parts others not so much.

Hailey Turner can do no wrong with this series and it's currently a 6 out of 6 books in this series that I've loved.

As usual, this book was fast paced with great action and great characters. The storyline was very well done and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was glad how Oliver stuck to his guns and refused to easily capitulate till he got the treatment he deserved. Liam for his part was great for sticking to his path, especially in acknowledging and proving that he had changed from the bastard he was in the past. As you can tell, the book went just as I expected and I was in heaven!

My only issue was that I wish we had more time with Liam & Ollie as a couple. As it was, I think we got more Jamie & Kyle time than the main couple of this book. I didn't mind more of them but I felt the book needed more time for Liam& Ollie too.

I really hope there is a short in the couple's future because I need moore from them!!

Liam! Finally Liam. When Hailey dropped this surprise release I was absolutely thrilled.

Her Metahumans series is right up at the top of my tree when it comes to my favourite Sci-Fi/Urban Fantasy come paranormal romance series.

There wasn't anything about this that I didn't love, oh apart from all the odd little times she likes to put her readers through an emotional wringer and drain them dry 😂

I lost count how many times my heart was in my throat and my heart was racing with fear thinking she wasnt really going to go there was she?

Well, I should have known, yes she was and yes she did and I've had my rollercoaster of a read in all the best ways.

You'll note there's no plot references in my review, that's deliberate. Read this one and be prepared to be hurtled through the equivalent of a river rapids ride through to a glorious sunset finale as we say a last goodbye to both Team Alpha and the Royal Legion.

I really, really hope it won't be the last peek we get of these amazing characters but, if it is, then I'll happily think of them all quietly getting on with loving and living out of the spotlight in a dozen different happy ever afters.

4.5 stars rounded up!

I was not expecting a 6th and final installment in this series, much less one with Liam finally getting someone to love as well, but that is what we got and I am so happy we got it.

Plus, we get to see Jamie and Kyle's wedding - which I was bummed about not getting to see - although I thought - or more hoped - we'd get to see it in another short. But I'm happy we got it in a full length book, plus some classic Jamie and Kyle sexy time hijinks, along with Liam's love story.

After we get Jamie and Kyle's wonderful wedding and the first night of their honeymoon, we're taken to England and Liam, who was also outed as part of the UMG, and as a royal, he's going to eventually have to step back from the team, even though that's the last thing he wants.

But first, they have to deal with Bennett and Murphy and the Reborn IRA once and for all, and they're stirring trouble in London, and Liam is on this one last assignment before he'll have to pull back.

And with MI6 having a liaison agent with the UMG in Oliver, things start to heat up between Liam and Oliver, who have a not so fun past.

When they were teenager they were friends, but Liam was a young, spoiled prince who didn't think things through and how his actions would effect others, and he hurt Oliver when they were younger and to this day Oliver hasn't been able to forgive him, understandably.

But now they are and have been working closer together than ever, and things progress naturally, as much as Oliver tries to resist.

I enjoyed these together and I enjoyed this ending to this wonderful series. I was so happy we got to see Jamie and Kyle again as well before this ended, and I'm so happy we got to see Liam get his HEA as well.

My only real complaint is that I wish we had gotten more for these two. I enjoyed them a lot and at times I just didn't care about the Reborn IRA anymore and just wanted these two together. I felt like we didn't quite as much as we should have gotten with these two. So at times I was kinda skimming some pages with the action, wanting to see when the next Liam and Oliver scene would be. I just wish there had been a little less of the action and more of the romance. Which could just be my love of romance above all, but still. We only got one book with Liam and Oliver, so I think more of them in this book is warranted.

But other than that, I enjoyed this, I was happy we got to revisit these beloved characters one last time, that we got to see Jamie and Kyle - my absolute faves - get married and that we got to see Liam finally get his own HEA.

So overall I loved this and recommend it for all lovers of this series. A great way to end this series, to tie up loose ends and give Liam a love story as well.

Two thumbs up from me, definitely recommend!

The last adventure in the lives of my favorite agents that closes the Metahuman Files for good. As with every series there were up and downs, angst and pain, adrenaline surge and calm before the storm. So it was no surprise to me that, in typical Hailey Turner fashion, the last chapter in the lives of metahumans was spectacular in its action, rich in feelings and full with happy ever after for everyone.

I knew bare minimum about Liam from previous books. Here I got to know him better and saw him in completely different light. Without giving too much away all I will say is that he changed a lot since his frivolous days as a young entitled spoiled man. I am glad to say that he turned himself around well. I rooted for Oliver from the beginning. He is that kind of man that can withstand anything life throws at him with quiet dignity. The relationship between two men starts as enemies and progresses into friends/lovers. I liked that the author didn't rush feelings that were already there but buried deep after years of mistrust.

Small part of the book was dedicated to Jamie and Kyle, their wedding and honeymoon. The ceremony reflected both men and how they felt for each other. I could feel the love between them. I always enjoyed their personal dynamics that was so vastly different from their professional one. Ms Turner cranked up the heat and wow, it was gooooood!!!

In the end the good prevailed against evil, the agents settled into a life of duty and contentment and everything was as it was meant to be. Some parts were as I wanted. There were moments when the author played with words, and I swear my heart stopped for a second and I thought: No, it can't be! Sneakily evil awesome Hailey Turner!!! I loved revisiting Alpha team and getting to know Liam, Oliver and the world of glittering royalty. I enjoyed this book immensely. So long, agents! Copy received for my honest and unbiased review

It was so good to be back in this world! This is a series that I would happily read forever and never get tired of it.

Liam has always been Jamie's best friend and Turner surprised us with him getting his own book. We got a peek into Liam and Oliver's tense relationship in Fire in the Heart, which was full of snark and thinly veiled hatred from Oliver. These two have a lot of history and Liam had a lot to make up for. A bit of a second chance story, it follows Oliver and Liam as they work together to bring down the Reborn IRA. It's not an easy journey for them for multiple reasons, as they must battle with internal and external conflicts.

This is also the book with Jamie and Kyle's wedding. EEEKKK!!! I absolutelyfkingadore those two and their wedding was very much needed after everything they've been through together. It gave me all the feels and made me so incredibly happy. We get both Jamie and Kyle's POVs so we experience the wedding (and the honeymoon 👀🔥) through their eyes. As a side note - all of the kinky shelves I have marked are related to Jamie and Kyle. Liam and Oliver aren't kinky. As much I loved spending time with them though, I do think it took away from Liam and Oliver's story a bit. There was a lot going on plot-wise and I don't think we got enough time solely dedicated to them.

I really liked Liam and Oliver but sadly, I didn't get the same "omg perfection" feeling that I got from Jamie/Kyle and Alexei/Sean. The writing was fantastic, per usual, so I mainly attribute that to not getting enough time with them. Besides the wedding, there was a lot of page time dedicated to the Reborn IRA and Bennett problem. A lot goes down there so I won't get into details, but we get a pretty satisfactory ending to what has been six books in the making. .

I would highly recommend reading this series, even the novella spin-offs, in order. A lot goes on plot-wise with the military aspect and I think you would miss details if you jumped from the fifth book to this one. Also, Alexei and Sean's wedding happens in Fire in the Heart, which you definitely don't want to skip!

This became one of my favorite series and I love all of the characters dearly. It's hard to say goodbye to them. If you haven't read this yet, please read this series. It's outstanding and deserves so much love.

This is in many ways the cherry on top.
Liam’s story really completes this fabulous series.

I loved …

.) revisiting this universe and reminiscing ‘the good old days’.

.) seeing Jamie and Kyle on their wedding day.

.) the everlasting heat and desire between them. For me, they are one of the hottest couples ever! And they prove that yet again on their wedding night!

.) that justice was served to people who deserved it. Saying that, I was shocked

However, I couldn’t help feeling that …

.) some parts of the book are rushed.

.) Liam and Oliver’s love story isn’t fleshed out as much as others were before.

.) the first kiss between them shouldn't have happened when it happened.

.) Liam keeps apologizing … like forever and forever. I understand that he behaved very badly when he was young and that the consequences of his behaviour have affected Oliver's life up to that moment, but to me it was too much. I thought he did a very good job with it the first-time round. And his insistence that 'he didn't deserve forgiveness' is also a bit overplayed.

.) the chances of what happens with Oliver towards the end are highly unlikely. But, admittedly, I was very happy how things panned out.

Niggles aside, it was great fun being back with all those very memorable and lovable characters! and that's why I rated it four stars.
And the London setting and having tea with the Queen all added to that!

Review from 2020

A for narration / B+ for content - 4.5 stars rounded up.

Note: The Metahuman Files is a series in which overarching plotlines mean all the books need to be listened to in order; there are spoilers for earlier books in this review.

When I listened to In the Requiem, book five in Hailey Turner’s gripping series of action-packed, sexy futuristic thrillers, it was billed as the last (full-length book) in the series. The main couples got their HEAs, the bad guys were defeated and the group of characters I’d come to know and love over five brilliant books all got to head off into the sunset and pastures new. Ms Turner did, however, leave one major plot-thread hanging and has kept that going through the couple of novellas she’s published since In the Requiem came out, and I – along with many fans – was expecting that one of those novellas would tie up that loose end and also bring us Jamie and Kyle’s wedding. Earlier this year, the author sprung a very well-kept surprise on us by announcing that there would be a sixth (and this time, definitely final) book in the series – and it not only ties up the plot, and shows us the wedding, it also gives us a story for Liam Wessex, a major secondary character in the series who quickly became a favourite with readers – who just as quickly started to ask when Ms. Turner would write a story for him.

In the Solace is that book, and while it doesn’t top the last couple in the series, it’s a great last hurrah for all concerned – Ms. Turner and Mr. Boudreaux included!

When In the Requiem ended, Jamie Callahan and Alpha Team – assisted by Liam Wessex, captain of the Royal Legion of the United Metahuman Guardians (UMG – the UK equivalent of the MDF) – had neutralised the threat from the Russian mob and the Sons of Adam terrorist group who were manufacturing and selling Splice (a deadly chemical weapon) on the black market. But their victory didn’t come without a cost, and with their identities as metahumans exposed during the final showdown, and the resultant political fall-out (Jamie’s father was running for President) Alpha Team can no longer fight. And Liam, a member of the British Royal Family knows his days as a field officer for the UMG are numbered.

As In the Solace opens, Liam arrives in Washington D.C., where he is to act as Jamie’s Best Man for his wedding to Kyle Brannigan. They’ve been close friends for many years, and have more in common than their being metahumans, though; both are members of powerful, high-profile families, and they have an acute understanding of what it means to be constantly under the media spotlight, both of them bound by public perception that never saw the real person behind the smile. And now Jamie is ‘retired’ from the MDF, he’s also in a position to understand exactly where Liam is right now; loathe to give up the job he is so dedicated to and more than that, to – as he sees it – abandon the close-knit team he works with who have become his family.

Once Jamie and Kyle are married and off on their honeymoon (and yes, have that bucket of ice handy for the wedding night!) the focus shifts to London and the plot proper kicks in. The hanging thread I mentioned is the one that was set up back in  In the Shadows , when the scheme to infiltrate and destroy the black market Splice operation was blown apart by a double agent high up in the CIA. He got away and has been on the run ever since, resurfacing in the novella  Fire in the Heart , in which Alexei and Sean (on their honeymoon) are roped in – by Liam – to help the UMG and Mi6 on a joint mission to apprehend the traitor. This story introduced us to MI6 agent Oliver Archer, whose relationship with Liam was clearly somewhat strained, despite the showers of sparks flying between them. After Jamie’s wedding, Liam arrives back at UMG HQ to the news that there are strong indications that former CIA Director Carter Bennett is intending to sell mobile Splice labs to the Reborn IRA. With Royal Ascot just days away and indications that the Houses of Parliament are at the top of the list of potential targets, the clock is ticking, and Liam is given the go-ahead to lead his team for probably the last time, to find the Splice labs, capture Bennett and shut down his illegal operations once and for all. In this, he’s going to have a little extra help in the form of Jamie and Kyle who, returned from their honeymoon, have been specially invited to attend Ascot by Liam’s grandmother Queen Mary III – but who are determined not to be left out of this last fight.

As usual, Hailey Turner brings us an exciting and deftly-plotted story containing plenty of fast-paced action and steamy moments. She has a gift for writing incredibly vivid action scenes that play out like mini-movies, and for creating strong connections between her characters; even though we only really meet the individual members of Liam’s Royal Legion in this book, there’s a strong sense of camaraderie between them, and the friendship between Liam and Jamie is warm, brotherly and obviously one of long-standing.

When it comes to the romance, Liam and Oliver have terrific chemistry and have known each other almost all their lives, so there’s a lot of shared experience there, even though they’ve not been on the friendliest of terms for the last decade or so. Their paths have crossed occasionally over the years, and although Liam knows he behaved like a total shit towards Oliver when they were younger, he doesn’t realise that the repercussions of his actions continue to dog Oliver even now.

Oliver’s recent assignment as the liaison between MI6 and the UMG puts him back into Liam’s orbit, but he’s a professional; he’ll do his job and just avoid Liam as much as he can. What he hasn’t bargained for however, is a Liam who wants very much to apologise and try to repair their friendship… or that he’d still be so strongly attracted to him. Their romance does perhaps move a little quickly, but the UST is delicious and the fact that they have so much shared history counts in their favour and makes it easier to believe they could fall for each other within a fairly short timespan. I liked them individually and as a couple; Oliver is clearly up to Liam’s weight and I liked that Liam was prepared to do whatever it took to earn Oliver’s forgiveness and was so clearly aware of his flaws and past mistakes.

As a side note, with the book set almost entirely in London with an almost entirely British cast, I was so pleased to hear British terminology (plenty of cuppas and kips) and that the dialogue had a strongly British idiom and rhythms of speech. Ms. Turner has a clear grasp of London geography and how to get around on the Tube as well – brownie points for getting all that right!

Greg Boudreaux brings his A-game to this one (like he ever does anything else!) and delivers another absolutely captivating performance. I’ve listened to him voicing English characters before and have been impressed with his accent, so I wasn’t worried, going in, that I’d be listening to something out of the Dick van Dyke School of English accents! This might be the longest Mr. Boudreaux has had to sustain the accent and the largest number of British characters he’s voiced in any one book – and one of those is the Queen! – but other than a handful of tells and mispronunciations, he does a terrific job. One of Liam’s team is a Scot, Mr. Boudreaux throws in some very respectable Irish accents along the way and also voices a couple of Londoners with a more than decent Estuary accent. In addition, he performs Jamie and Kyle consistently, differentiates subtly but clearly between Liam and Oliver and switches seamlessly from accent to accent without breaking a sweat (or so it seemed!) As always, his emotional connection to the material and characters communicates itself to the listener and definitely added an extra layer of enjoyment to my overall listening experience.

In the Solace turned out to be one of the best surprises I’ve had all year, and I’m sure fans of the Metahuman Files will love it.

I can't believe this series is done.

We got the HEA for Sean and Alexei in Fire In The Heart, and this one delivered every inch of the HEA Jaime & Kyle deserved.

I was so excited to see more of Liam and Oliver, and they did not disappoint.

We were finally clued in on the animosity between them, and the pinch of enemies-to-lovers was just what the doctor ordered.
Oliver quickly clawed his way to my heart with the rest of ghe team, and it's honestly a shame that we don't get to see more of their story TT.

Overall this was an excellent series. MM romance but actual urban fantasy with action to spare.
So happy to have stumbled upon this gem on Kindle Unlimited.
The only reason this wasn't a 5 star series for me is because I couldn't ignore the potential for more. With editing, better pacing of the story and the development of the relationships this could've been truly something else altogether.

I still see myself revisiting this world all the time though, just because I miss everyone.
.
.
.
We also finally got to meet the rest of Liam's team, so here's a cheat sheet.

UMG's Royal Legion (basically the equivalent of the MDF's Alpha Team - kinda)
Colonel Liam Wessex (Knight) - Leader of the Royal Legion Eletrokinesis
Royal Naval Captain Samaira Bhasin (Europa) - Second-in-command / Hydrokinesis
Tariq Hameed (Sanguine) - Micro-magnetism in blood
Abiagail Johnson (Peregrine) - Super speed
Glenn MacNair (Highlander) - Force fields
Seconded from MI6 to the Royal Legion
Agent Oliver Archer (Raven) - SIS field agent

IN THE SOLACE brings an end to the METAHUMAN FILES series and I don't know what I'm going to do now that it's over. I loved this series and the journey these characters have been through; it was action packed, filled with sexy moments, found family, and even some political intrigue.

The beginning of IN THE SOLACE focuses more on Kyle and Jamie and I was overjoyed to finally see them married. I've been completely invested in their relationship from the very beginning and they are hands down one of my favorite couples. Plus that honeymoon scene *bursts into flames*. The rest of the book shifts to metahuman Liam Wessex and his love interest MI6 Agent Oliver Archer, though Jamie and Kyle still play important roles in the rest of the book.

I enjoyed Liam and Oliver but their story didn't feel as in-depth as the prior couples only because we just got this one book with them. Liam and Oliver have a hard history and for a little bit I admit I disliked Liam for what he did to Oliver when they were teenagers. But the way Liam has changed was obvious and I respect his growth and his determination to fix his past mistakes. Things happen quickly between the two and before they can really dig into their feelings the action picks up and that's where it gets really emotional. Overall, a great series end though it's a bittersweet ending to a series I've loved.

3.5 stars... rounded up because of Kyle and Jamie's chapters.

5 stars for Greg's narration

So, I didn't like this book as much as the others. Not by a long shot. I was excited for Liam's book, but this fell short for me.

Not taking into account Kyle and Jamie's wedding and honeymoon....SWOON AND DROOL. Holy shit these two just burn up the pages together. That scene with the THING and the DOMINANCE and just GAHHHHH.

As for Liam and Oliver. I liked Liam but I didn't like Oliver. He was just there, existing🤣.
I didn't warm up to him at all.

The plot was not as tight as the other books as well. Sure there was action and suspense but it fizzled out quickly and didn't leave my heart racing like the other books.

The Steam, between Liam and Olly, was fine. Again not as hot as the other couples in the series. Kyle, Jamie, Alexei and Sean kind of set the bar high and Liam and Olly never had a chance imo.

I still loved the writing and the world, but compared to the others in the series, it doesn't quite fit.

3.5 stars.

I'm a big fan of Hailey Turner's Metahuman Files, and I of course enjoyed this most recent - and final, *sniff sniff* - installment in the series. Intriguing, thrilling, sexy, with an enjoyable cast of characters who showcased some novel powers (did anyone else think of The Boys??)

But I found myself agreeing with Shile that Liam and Oliver's love story felt a bit lacking. The romances are significant, if not the main focus, in this series, but they are ultimately well-developed and emotionally fulfilling. Liam and Oliver shared some tender moments, but their potential wasn't fully realized.

And I, too, missed Alexei. But my Alexei obsession love is renowned.

Still, beggars can't be choosers, and I doubt that I'll ever stop begging for more stories in this universe, even if they feature different Metahumans. Turner's writing is stellar, and the world is that fun. Until then, I appreciated the closure to the series and for its fans.

I can't believe it's over... saying goodbye to Jamie, Kyle, Alexei, Sean, and the whole crew is a hard thing to do, but here I am doing just that 😭 I'm going to miss them so much. The book hangover is real with this one, but they've all fought a long, hard battle to get to their HEAs. The time has come to see them ride off happily into the sunset, no matter how much it hurts to say goodbye 💔

The first 20% of In the Solace was amazing. After a million years of torture, we FINALLY get to see Jamie and Kyle tie the knot! Mr. and Mr. Callahan ftw 😌 After the wedding, however, things got a bit boring for me. I like Liam and Oliver just fine, and I'm happy they got their HEA too, but it felt like their relationship and story was tacked on at the end to wrap up everything with the Reborn IRA. I wasn't able to get fully invested in their relationship given the time they were allotted in the story, but I could have been had they been given more time. I've always liked Liam as a character and would have loved to see more of his background with Oliver. I wanted to see the tension build between them and slowly come around to a second chance romance. Unfortunately, that didn't really happen. Everything moved too quickly, a high level overview, if you will. I wanted the meat and potatoes, but I got an appetizer instead 😔 So, while I wish this had been a 5* read, it wasn't quite that for me.

I listened to the audio for the entire series and it was amazing! A million stars to Greg Boudreaux ✨ His ability to seamlessly switch between so many different characters never fails to amaze me. He did a fabulous job narrating the entire cast. His voices for Liam and Oliver were a bit difficult for me to differentiate at times, but I couldn't complain because I was still listening to Greg B. I could listen to him voicing Alexei forever and never tire of it 😮‍💨

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

Oh man, ever since the first book in the Metahuman Files series, I’ve been hooked. Turner’s writing is fantastic, her world building is beyond compare, and with each novel and novella, this world has grown and changed along with ever increasing threats. And love. Can’t forget that. Turner is a master at weaving love stories in with the post-apocalyptic action and adrenaline.

This is the last book in the series and it finally, finally brings everything to a close. With each book, the immediate threat was tied up, but there was always a through thread that kept things going. After the Fire in the Heart, there was a lot more conclusion, but Bennet was still out there and, I have to admit, I was disappointed by that. In this book, we finally get the ending we deserve.

And we get Liam’s story! Liam was a constant secondary character throughout the series, a friend to Jamie, and a help to the MDF and our team. He’s always been a likeable guy, witty and full of sass, while at the same time showing a seriousness and competence one would expect from a military-trained Metahuman. I always loved him when he showed up on page, and I loved how Turner laced in some longing from him, especially when he saw Jamie and Kyle’s relationship, so that we could see he was ready for one of his own.

If I could have given this book, actually the entire series, more than 5 stars I would have. I was so happy that we got one more story in this series and it was Kyle & Jamie's wedding as well as Liam & Oliver coming back together. I really hope that they get another book, maybe in the Classified spin-off, so we could get more of them. I didn't realize just about horrible Liam was. I have loved him since the absolute beginning. If I would have known what he did to Oliver when they were kids, I would have turned my back on him. That was just plain horrible and you and your friends were the worst. But boy have we seen Liam grow into the man he is today. He is still a bit arrogant, but that's one of his charms for me. We get to see him interact with his family and the feeling that he is never going to be able to do what makes him happy because he is in succession to be king, if only his brother would have 1 more child :D. When there is a major threat to his family, he can count on Jamie and the rest of Alpha team to band together and come help him save the day. It takes a lot of groveling, but Oliver finally gives Liam a second chance and they get their HEA.

I think what Hailey Turner needs to do is take a break from the incredible pace at which she is releasing her books because it's starting to affect the quality. She has always been very good at coming up with great characters, concepts and plots. She has also always had trouble at making those things come together coherently and instead of getting better at it she is becoming worse with every new book.

This story is all telling and very little showing. That doesn't matter too much in the parts about Jamie and Kyle because we're naturally incredibly invested in them and will obviously care about their wedding and honeymoon very much. But the Liam and Oliver story really suffers. The contrast between a couple with several books worth of history (that gets conveniently retold) and whatever friends-to-lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers thing is playing out between Liam and Oliver is just too stark when everything plays out on the surface like that.

Hailey Turner is just too good at this for me to just accept mediocre when I know she can deliver excellence. I would be fine with waiting longer between instalments if it led to better quality control in the future.

Take 2

This was my second attempt at reading this book. My first attempt was immediately right after the release of the book. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get past the first few chapters. It was mostly a me-thing. I was either too tired or not in the mood.

I kinda was prepared not to read this ever again but I’m so glad I attempted it again. Certainly satisfying to have a series come to an end. The stakes here was almost as high as the stakes in the previous book. I’m glad Ms Turner is always willing to go as far as is necessary in the books that she writes. It’s definitely heart wrenching to read the horrors that the MCs face but I think it does that extra punch to the story.

I don’t know what else to say except that it was good. It was satisfying to have things wrapped up. It’s just a bit different because it’s not focussed on Alpha Team. But it was good 😊

Reread February 2025:
While I appreciate getting to return to the Metahuman series, and getting some attention on Liam, it was just glaringly obvious that this one was just not as well plotted in any aspect as the rest of the series.

I loved that we got to see Kyle and Jamie's wedding, but their POV chapters felt perfunctory at best, and only there to justify writing their wedding from their POV.

The romance between Oliver and Liam COULD have been nice - I liked their banter in Fire in the Heart, and I liked that they had a history. However, ultimately their relaionship was purely based on Liam feeling guilty over what he did to Oliver in the past, while Oliver wanted nothing to do with him save for physical attraction. Which... not a good basis for a relationship. There was also no development beyond fucking once and then suddenly they are head over heels.
Plus, to be honest, the way Liam pursued Oliver way beyond Oliver repeatedly saying he wanted nothing to do with Liam left a bad taste in my mouth.

The plot, on the surface, is them chasing after Bennet who escaped at the end of In the Requiem, but to be honest even that felt half baked - there are other new villains at play, and Bennet barely appears.

Still a super fun and entertaining read, and I feel bittersweet having finished it given that this is the last in the series.

Original review February 2020: 3.5 stars
Surprise sequel and final novel in the Metahumans 'verse.

Content warnings include: violence, terrorism, bombs going off, electrocution, torture, abduction, car crash, sex on-page; mentions of bullying.

In the Solace is Liam and Oliver's story, the former a side character with frequent appearances in the rest of the series, the latter only appearing in Fire in the Heart for the first time.
In addition to the new romance and protagonists, the plot wraps up the last loose threads left over from In the Requiem.

Next to Liam and Oliver, Jamie and Kyle also have a couple of POV chapters, mainly about their wedding and honeymoon.
On the one hand, I loved those chapters because I adored those sappy, romantic scenes full of love and adoration between the newlyweds. On the other hand, I found them distracting from the rest of the plot and the other two protagonists.

Part of this was that I had a hard time getting invested in Liam and Oliver. I'm not sure why - I especially found Oliver interesting, he's the exact type of character that appeals to me (similarly to Sean, who is my favourite of the series.) Liam isn't a character I usually like, especially with his omnipresent arrogance due to being a prince (and again with the parking violations!!!), but he was mostly fine. Likewise, the mystery of Liam and Oliver's shared past should have been compelling, but also ended up not drawing me in as much as I thought it would.
If the two have one thing going for them it was their sexual chemistry - that was amazing.

That said, the plot was up for a few surprises. Ultimately, the things I expected to happen did occur - just in a completely different manner than I anticipated, which kept the read pleasantly surprising and exciting.

Overall, In the Solace is a must read for any fan of the series and delivers a satisfying ending to the universe and characters.

I received an ARC and reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

I am so sad this is the end. This has been one of the best series I've read. I'm glad we finally got Liam his man in Oliver. Fantastic.

This opinion is about the whole series.

First, I'm amazed at myself because I don't usually read completely a series that makes me eye-roll so frequently, even more so if they have elements that I dislike directly. I think I finished it more than anything because I had it on hand, fully loaded on my e-reader

If I gave it two stars, it's because what I found satisfying is how cinematic the narration is; it was easy for me to visualize everything like a movie.

The rest seemed lackluster to me.

The world-building is negligent; Yes, some prominent features are outlined but almost at no time I felt immersed in the 2780s. As I have already said in some other reviews, are the details of everyday life which give the feeling of a futuristic ambiance. I'll hardly feel that this series happens 265 years in the future If I keep reading about cars —which also don't show any technological advance—, about jeans, T-shirts, elevators, a character saying "Computer, television off", just to give a few examples.

Think about 265 years in the past, that is to say, approximately 1755. Do we speak as in that time, do we dress as in that time, is the technology more or less the same? Obviously no. And that without considering the dizzying rate of technological change in the last 150 years, a rate that has no sign of slowing down, but rather the opposite; For example, throughout my life, I have seen vinyl records disappear; I saw the beginning and the end of cassettes, walkmans, CDs, et cetera It would have been better to create this series as Paranormal Fantasy or Alternative Reality, because as science fiction this series must be one of the worst I have ever read.

The acquisition of powers sounds more like fantasy than science fiction to me. But I put it in a separate paragraph because I understand that it could be a personal assessment, while what I said in the two previous paragraphs can be factually defended.

Geopolitics is pathetic: in a world in which the population has receded to less than half (how and why isn't clearly explained), in which the effects of climate change are multiple, geopolitical changes practically don't exist. Moreover, I see a narrative branded by anglophile supremacism dismissive of Mexico, France, and Russia, the only other countries mentioned throughout the series. The Russians in the team may give the idea that this is not the case. Still, Alexei is delineated as a caricature: He cannot speak English correctly despite having been in the USA for nearly 20 years and having arrived as a child, is a bragger, is ostentatious, and he is the only team member who even boasts about taking advantage of Jamie's wealth. I found Alexei's characterization offensive more than once.

I see an absence of diversity (of gender identities, of sexual roles), very little inclusion, and a military glorification to the detriment of other social actors such as democratic institutions or journalism. In my vision, the military must always be at the service of civil society, and subordinate to constitutional mandates.

The plot, in general, is poor and unimaginative; it simply repeats conflicts of our time (again, the series is supposed to take place more than a quarter of a millennium in the future); and is primarily limited to: intel, action scene, sex scene; rinse and repeat; Additionally there are one or two melodramatic episodes for each of the couples consisting of torture or extreme danger suffered by the members of each relationship. There isn't any remarkable character development or relationship development.

To my liking, the sex scenes were too long, repetitive, and boring, so I skipped them more than once.

Lastly, there is no translation of the entire sentences transliterated from Russian; I expected to find them in the Index at the end of each story, but nyet, at no point does the author have the courtesy to let us know what their meaning is.

Series: Metahuman Files #6
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

Colonel Liam Wessex is determined to remain in the field for as long as possible. When the terrorists start targeting London, he finds himself working with M16 Agent Oliver Archer again.

This book is told from Liam and Oliver’s POV except for the very beginning where we get Jamie and Kyle’s POV for their wedding and the beginning of their honeymoon. I love that we finally got to see Jamie and Kyle get married and have a honeymoon. These have a very intense and steamy relationship and I love seeing them finally get their happy ending.

Now onto Liam and Oliver. If you read Fire in the Heart, you will know that Agent Archer and Liam clearly have a past history. We finally learn the truth about what happened. I liked that Liam was sincere in his apology to Oliver for his past actions and he gots out of his way to make up for it.

I enjoyed Oliver and Liam’s story. There was a lot of tension and hostility in the beginning but they worked through it once they actually started talking. Oliver is just as dedicated to his job as Liam was and I think he is the perfect partner for him. I liked Liam’s team as well and would love to learn more about them now.

Overall, I loved seeing Liam finally fall in love. This was just another wonderful blend of action packed missions against terrorists and steamy and emotional romance. I love this series and really hope she writes more because I am not ready to give these characters up.

Trigger Warnings: on page torture, grief, violence; suicide;

I was lucky enough to win an arc of this book. Again, gracias Hailey. It was great getting back to these characters, this was my first introduction to Hailey’s world & I’ve been a super fan since. This being the last book in the MetaHumans series was bittersweet. I loved every second but I’m sad that it’s over. The wedding scene was so perfect *swoon* and Liam & Oliver were excellent together. I really really hope this gets the audiobook version *hint, hint, wink, wink*.

So if your a fan of this series or just curious about it, definitely check it out.
