This novel is a real favorite and I think it deserves to be better known. We follow a family over three generations:
- Theotitsa, the Greek grandmother living in Bulgaria, married to Todor who has already lost 8 children and who, as she gets older, drowns her sorrows in religion.
- Miriam, her daughter who falls in love with Ahmed, a poor Muslim with whom she will not be able to formalize her union because of their different faith.
- Then Haalim, their son, who grew up between Istanbul and Bulgaria.
I really loved Miriam and Ahmed, I found them so beautiful together in front of the rest of the world. Then little Haalim touched me enormously with his courage from a very young age. It’s an incredible story and I’m sad to close the book because I don’t want to say goodbye to this family.
I really liked the structure of the story, the short chapters told by the different characters, and in between, the author's interviews with these characters to understand their decisions and choices.
Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey are three countries that make me dream and I loved the change of scenery and the trip that this reading gave me.
