ബര്‍സ എന്നാല്‍ മുഖം തുറന്നിട്ടവള്‍. തുറന്നിട്ട മനസ്സുമായി ഇസ്ലാമിലൂടെ യാത്ര ചെയ്യുന്ന സബിതയുടെ ജീവിതരേഖകള്‍. പുരുഷകേന്ദ്രിതമായ ഇസ്ലാമിനെ സ്ത്രീ യുടെ കണ്ണിലൂടെ നോക്കിക്കാണുന്ന രചന. ഇസ്ലാമില്‍ ഒരു സ്ത്രീക്ക് സഞ്ചരിക്കാവുന്ന ദൂരത്തിന് അതിരുകളില്ലെന്ന് സ്ഥാപിക്കുകയും, എന്നാല്‍ എത്ര ദൂരം സഞ്ച രിച്ചാലും അവള്‍ ഇസ്ലാമിന്റെ അതിരുകള്‍ക്കുള്ളില്‍ ത്തന്നെയായിരിക്കുമെന്നും സ്ഥാപിക്കുന്ന നോവല്‍.

I had approached 'Barsa' after having read reviews of it which appraised it as a feminist critique of Islam. But what I found in it was a lethal formula of Saudi Arabia = Islam. It was more a criticism of Islam as practised in Saudi than a criticism of Islam itself. I wonder how different the story would have been if Sabitha and Rasheed had migrated to another country.

The author, however, has some very interesting insights about the way Islam is generally preached, taught, and comprehended. The protagonist, occasionally, exemplifies certain doubts which some, if not all, Muslim women have encountered at some point in their lives. There is a questioning of patriarchal interpretations, and convenient sidelining of women in histories. She does not, however, move beyond the framework of Islam, or denounce it in toto.

Apart from these, neither the plot nor the language was found to be commendable. 'Barsa', for me, also did not hold any charm in terms of craftsmanship or style.

"അതെ, തെരഞ്ഞടുക്കപെട്ട അവസാന ഖലീഫയായ അലിക്കെതിരെ കലാപമുയർത്തി വളർന്നു വന്നവനായിരുന്നു മുആവിയ. അലിയുടെ രക്തസാക്ഷിത്വത്തിന് ശേഷം വാളിന്റെ ബലത്താൽ ഖലീഫയായി അവരോധിക്കപെട്ട മുആവിയയുടെ സൈനിക ശക്തിക്കു മുന്നിൽ അവസരവാദത്തോടെ സ്വയം അടിയറ വെച്ചവരാണ് ഇന്നു മുസ്ലിങ്ങൾ എന്ന പേരിൽ ലോകമെമ്പാടുമുള്ള ഷിയാക്കല്ലാത്ത നീ കൂടി ഉൾപ്പെട്ടവർ . സുന്നികളെന്ന പേരിൽ അവരൊറ്റ കക്ഷി ആയിരുന്നു അന്ന് . അവസരവാദത്തിന്റെ വഞ്ചനയുടെ കറയുണ്ട് നിങ്ങളുടെ ചരിത്രത്തിൽ. ഇസ്ലാമിലെ അന്തച്ചിദ്രമൊഴിവാക്കാൻ ശക്തനായ നേതാവിന് പിന്നിൽ അണിനിരക്കുക ആയിരുന്നുവത്രെ . അതെ, ശക്തിക്കു മുന്നിൽ നീതി മുട്ടു കുത്തി . സത്യം മുട്ടു കുത്തി. മുആവിയക്ക് ശേഷം ഖിലാഫത്തിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാന തത്വങ്ങൾ കാറ്റിൽ പറത്തി, കുടുംബ ഭരണത്തിലേക്ക് അധികാരം നീണ്ടപ്പോഴും വായ്കൈ പൊത്തിനിന്നു നിങ്ങൾ. നിനക്കു ആത്മനിന്ദ തോന്നുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിൽ അതു സ്വാഭാവികം മാത്രമാണ്. ചരിത്രബോധവും നീതിബോധവും ഉള്ളവർക്കു അതു തോന്നേണ്ടതാണ്."

കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്ന വിഷയം കൊണ്ട് മാത്രം ബർസ ശ്രദ്ധേയവും സംവാദ അർഹവും ആകുന്നു .അല്ലാതെ രചനാപരം സവിശേഷത ഒന്നുമില്ല .

ഇസ്ലാമിന്റെ ഒരു സ്ത്രീ പക്ഷ വായന ആണ് .ഇസ്ലാമിന്റെ വ്യാഖ്യാനത്തെ അല്ല ,ഇസ്ലാമിനെ തന്നെ ക്രിട്ടിക്കൽ ആയി സമീപിക്കാൻ ഉള്ള ധൈര്യം ബർസ കാണിക്കുന്നു .ഇസ്ലാമിന്റെ മിത്തുകളെ / ചരിത്രത്തെ ബർസ ഒരു പുനർ വായന നടത്തുന്നു .പ്രവാചകന്റെ ഭാര്യമാർക്ക് പുനർ വിവാഹം വിലക്കാൻ വേണ്ടി "മാതൃ പദവി " അടിചെല്പ്പിച്ചത് ആണെന്ന് ബർസ പറയുന്നു .ഇബ്രാഹിം മകനെ ബലി നൽകാൻ തുനിഞ്ഞാലും ,മകന്റെ അമ്മയ്ക്ക് എങ്ങനെ അതിനു സാധിക്കും എന്ന് ബർസ ചോദിക്കുന്നു .അല്ലാഹുവിനോട് തന്നെ ബർസ കലഹിക്കുന്നു .

ഈ ബുക്ക് പലരെയും പ്രകോപിപ്പിച്ച കാര്യം ഖദീജ മുംതാസ് ഒരിക്കൽ പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട് .ഒരു മീറ്റിങ്ങിൽ ഒരു മെഡിക്കൽ വിദ്യാർഥി "മാഡത്തെ പടച്ചോൻ ശിക്ഷിക്കും ,മാഡം നരകത്തിൽ പോകും ..." എന്ന് അവരോടു പറഞ്ഞുവത്രേ .

Barsa is a fascinating read.The book discusses the peculiarities of Saudi society beautifully.The book follows Sabitha and Rashid a doctor couple working in Mecca sometime in the eighties.Barsa though not great is an engaging read.The book offers an honest look into Islam.I believe I have a better understanding of that religion after reading this book than before.Though the story is rather predictable it's written with passion and conviction.Barsa has it's heart in the right place.For that reason alone this book should be read.

Another conflict between a modern liberal woman who accepts Islam but fails to grasp the entire spectrum of Spirituality and reading from the context of social temporality and adapt. Still it raises relevant criticisms of various practices of community and significant questions. I wonder what would have happened if Dr.Sabitha the protagonist had migrated to some other country other than Saudi Arabia. The book is written badly and had to struggle forth to keep myself interested in reading.

Not very impressed with the novel !

I liked the boldness of the author to ask difficult questions on the position of woman in Islam and many times you feel like you also wanted to ask it ..
And she did well to give space for the readers to think about the answer than putting her idea across ..

But apart from that its just a plain read and many times I felt like a driving in a straight highway with cruise mode on .. She brings different characters and try to explain different faces of Islam, but the problem I felt was that the novel just don't pick up well and you are not very enthusiastic to turn to the next page ..

The taste of novel reading with each people and may be its a case of not matching well with my taste ..

ഇസ്ലാമിന്‍റെ കേന്ദ്രത്തിലിരുന്നുകൊണ്ട് ഒരു തുറന്ന കാഴ്ച്ചപ്പാടിലൂടെ മതത്തിലെ പുരുഷമേധാവിത്തപരമായ പെരുമാറ്റച്ചട്ടങ്ങളെ തുറന്നുകാട്ടുന്നതോടൊപ്പം സൗദിയിലെ ഔദ്യോഗികജീവിതം നല്‍കുന്ന അനുഭവങ്ങളെ നിജരൂപത്തിലില്‍ പ്രതിഫലിപ്പിക്കുവാനും നോവലിലൂടെ ഖദീജാ മുംതാസ് ശ്രമിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്, വിജയം വരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഒരു നല്ല വായനാനുഭവം.
