I love her nice clean illustrations but it has non-gender-neutral language. It's all about fire'men' and I think it even says they are tough and strong? Can't remember as I already ditched it. Anyway, I don't want to teach my two year old that firefighters are all strong tough DUDES so this one is gone. We have tons on fire engines etc anyway. I do like Rockwell's work; this one was published in 1986. For some reason I'm more flexible about essentially sexist books if they have female-centred narratives, because I figure that at least shows that girls are at the centre of plenty of stories. And as I have a boy I don't mind if he reads stories about tea parties and stuff, because everyone likes teacups, right? It's not a bad thing to expose him to a bit of girl culture about fairies and princesses. I guess I take them on a case by case basis. Sometimes I turn a blind eye when the story is otherwise too wonderful.
This an absolutely adorable fire engine book for a child! WONDERFUL illustrations and very basic very simple wording. My special needs teen age son, although he can understand bigger chapter books, he LOVES fire trucks and things of that nature. He smiled and giggled all through this story. This would be a good 'beginning reader' story for a beginning reader too... simple words and pages so it would help encourage their self esteem by being able to read this on their own.
Learn about fire boats, ladder trucks, pumper trucks, fully equipped trucks, fire house ambulances, and the fire chief himself from a fire engine loving dalmatian pup. Simple, colorful illustrations make this quite eye catching.
I like the illustrations here and even though I am not a pre school teacher (yet), I think this book can create great motivation for the little students in learning about different elements of our world, starting with a fire truck.
Weird with a title like this that this very book came up first in line on goodreads. Anyway fond memories of reading this to C after she got it in the mail (from a book club) as a toddler. Thus the 4 stars, although the art is not super duper.
This was a hit at the fire fighter program. The fire truck has center stage in this book and Rockwell's simple style was a hit with the story time crowd.
