My nephew, who enjoys character design, introduced me to Jake Parker over Christmas break (2022). I bought this book because my 12-year-old son is an artist and wants to learn more about animation and character design. Ok, I might also be an art enthusiast (and armature artist) myself and figured I would enjoy it too.
There are a number of things I love about this book! 1. I love the art - it's creative and fun 2. I love being invited into the development processes - seeing characters and art work in the making 3. I love the "unfinished" quality of the work. This is a sketch book after all. One pitfall I observe with young (and not so young) perfectionist artists is the need to produce a finished product every time. It's debilitating. This book shows that real artists produce a lot of draft work (in this case, REALLY nice draft work) and it's perfectly ok to leave those thought lines behind. I'm with Parker - it's delightful to enjoy another artists sketchbook!
2023 is shaping up to be an art reading year - art books, manga, graphic novels, and apparently sketchbooks on cartooning that have so little text I feel guilty counting them toward my "reading" goal, but are nevertheless well worth reviewing ... and this is why I signed up to enjoy 100 books this year.
I closely examined this book as part of my Year of Visual Arts initiative for 2023. It was so worth it!
