Dimensions Saga #1

Dimension Shifter

Rate this book
The dimensions are in chaos, magic is illegal, and water is a rare commodity. Kyrin is running from the law. As a magic user, she’s marked for death, and as a run-away from the Shadowmere, she’s hunted as a weapon. Shifting between dimensions is all that’s kept her alive. On the brink of being caught by the Shadowmere, Kyrin stumbles into a dimension devoid of the drought and seemingly untouched by the wrath of the Consortiums. In this dimension she finds a people innocent of the evils of the universe and naïve to the worlds surrounding them. Lord Alric has ruled over his kingdom for 15 years under the direction of their god, Sithias. Before his time, the gods fought, and evil was removed from the lands. It isn’t until Kyrin arrives that he’s even considered that evil may still be among them, or that the long-dead use of magic may still be around.

The first half of the book would have received 3 or 4 stars, but I would give the last chapter 0 stars if I were able, so we'll average it to 2.

A girl runs from dimension to dimension trying to escape the group of people who think she is their property. She is one of a few people who can dimension shift, and she is also a magic user (from a world where it's especially rare and also illegal), so lots of people are willing to kill her. She was trained from a young age to fight, and kill, so she has survived for the last 6 years on the run. Not surprisingly she doesn't trust anyone (important story point).

Wounded she ends up in a new dimension that seems to have water and food (something that is extremely scarce on the other worlds she has visited). She saves a priest on this new planet by killing the 4 warriors who were chasing him (not because she cares at all about the priest but because they saw her and decided to kill her also), but is badly injured in the fight. He brings her to his country and she is healed by the priests and the king (who thinks she's very beautiful and wonders why she has so many scars when she is so young). When she wakes up she tells the king that she owes him for her life and will be his slave for the next year to pay the debt off.

So far the story sounds good, and I expected to like the book a lot. But the girl is a completely unbelievable combination of clueless and cold blooded killer. She ran away from her original owner (I think owner is the correct word here?) because he had decided not to wait till she was of age to "marry" her, but she has NO IDEA what is involved in what she was running from (mating/sex/relationship), so I guess she just saw his look and took off?

So basicly the story comes down to nice king trying to tame wild killer (completely clueless) girl because she's beautiful and magical and he wants to teach her about sex.

I definitely enjoyed and would recommend this book. It has a different plot, and some parts can seem dark, but the characters are amazing. This had me laughing at multiple points. This kept my attention all the way through and I finished this book in about a day. Definitely a good read if you like stories with a paranormal twist, magic, and in the time of kings.

First of all I didn't read all of the book. I reached about 80% of it and i think I'm not missing out on anything.
One star is for the original concept of the world in the book. Let me explain now why i didn't like it. For starters the main character remains unlikable for most part. I don't know how much a reader can empathize with a character who it's hard to like. She's ignorant, which is not bad, she is stubborn, which is not bad, she is smart, which is not bad, but also she is silly. They might sound like a good marriage of characteristic for a character, but trust me, they're not. It was compelling to read about a character who had to fight for survival from a very early age and see how she responds to a different world where all her moral values are not justified. It was not compelling to know that the character mistrusted people she liked throughout the novel. And it was definitely not compelling knowing she could kill them anytime. There was only 1% growth in her throughout. She remained suspicious of people who looked after her, who offered her food and who had proven they didn't want pay in return for those. It was unbelievable that the character has remained hungry and thirsty for days on end and still be strong, flexible and able to run. No matter the world, concept, book, a character cannot live actively without food and water (unless of course they are creatures who do not rely on food as humans know it). So it became quite frustrating to know she was on the run for six years and was still alive.
I enjoyed the concept of deities with an active presence in their followers' lives. What remained a mystery and an annoying one as well was why her God would want her ignorant in the "carnal knowledge" (as described in the book). And then suddenly change his mind and want her all deep in learning.
But the most frustrating thing on this book was the King and his aims. At first he seemed interested in observing and sheltering the young girl. But after that his interests seemed to move on what her God didn't want her to know. Sex. So for most part they spend together (which is a lot) is about how he tries to teach her what love is and how to kiss or what sex is, but without ever explaining. So he starts kissing her to make her trust him as a peson. Not a lover And while doing that he claims that he just cares about her. Not love her. This is not as weird as it gets, but it's a good start. I mean what? I don't understand what stopped the author from making a 35 year old guy explaining sex to a 21 year old girl? One good reason besides "It'd be awkard!". Trust me, reading about how he holds and kisses her but none of them knowing or admitting they like each other was more awkward.
I'm deeply disappointed in this novel and couldn't force myself to read this book anymore. It started out very well and then moved to being an utter disappointment.

A very quick read. Enjoyed the interplay of naive, naturally gifted protagonist versus overpowering, antagonist while experiencing unconditional grace.

The dimensions are in chaos. Magic is illegal, realm jumping is only for the elite, and water is a rarity. Kyrin has been on the run most of her life. Sold to the emperor at the age of three it was discovered she was a magic user and tortured frequently thereafter until she escaped. Once she fled she discovered the ability to see portal markers and jump to a new dimension. With the help of the priestess of a God she is able to learn skills to keep her alive and somewhat safe. However, her God is not a forgiving God and the lord in her newest realm is intent in freeing her from his tortures. Even if she is considered a potential evil.
From start to finish this book was an exciting ride. We follow a young woman who has had to fight for her life for it's entirety. She is very beautiful, but hates her looks and finds solace in each new scar she accrues as they hide her more. Beauty gets you noticed which gets you in trouble. While escaping the Shadowmere, yet again, she finds herself in a new dimension where water is so plentiful it lays in frozen piles surrounding her entry point.

When she is saved by the Lord of this land she owes him a debt she insists must be repaid. Lord Alric is amused by this young girl and her insistence, taking her into his home as a maid. She quickly makes herself useful, displaying her skills in fighting as well as in unintentionally discovering a deception in his castle. Feelings slowly begin to build, no matter how one-sided it may seem. Alric's God, Sithis, wants to know more about this young woman while her God wants to know more about this world.

The characters in the book are wonderful. We all know I am a huge fan of any polytheistic religion and this book is strife with Gods, Goddesses, and battles on the human plane. These Gods have a very active hand in their people's lives and make no qualms about it. Alric was my favorite, although he was a bit naïve. Kyrin is naïve in the ways of inter-personal relationships, but Alric has more puppy tendencies. Adorable though.

I absolutely enjoyed this book and will likely look to read the next in the series eventually. It is book one in a series, however all major plot points in this book were resolved while leaving plenty open to keep the reader interested in moving on. The book has magic, dimensions, ogres, and all sorts of other fantastical elements.

There is nothing like a good book that drags you across the dimensions... Literally. Well..., figuratively, but a very real experience for some of us bookworms.

I was already highly interested in re-reading this series considering how I found Dimension Shifter (DS) while randomly surfing the internet of 2013. With a secret book addiction, DS was quickly an obsession.

Now older, with actual income (and not monopoly money) to buy the rest of the series, I re-read equally obsessively. I really appreciate T. M. Nielsen's work. I believe in some aspects, there are some 'out-of-the-box' awkward moments that are sometimes hard to get behind. Especially when it comes to the main characters' behaviour in relationships. However, dwelving into intricate dimensions, experiencing every physical and mental cut and bruise that Kyrin suffered, fostering feelings of care for well-portrayed characters, and witnessing Kyrin's evolution is a one-of-a-kind journey. Of course, this opinion comes from also reading more books of this series.

While simple in writing and sometimes dialogues, I can't help but appreciate how it helps with immersion in the fantasy world, how the plot thickens with every book, the funny moments, and the burning strength that comes from Kyrin along the series. For those who get dragged out into the dimensions by T. M. Nielson, there is nothing short of great storytelling which keeps you hooked from the first phrase till the end.

Enthusiastically recommended,
SAM.

Consiglio

Would recommend to everyone who is into fantasy genre and please don't fall for people saying that it's ending is really bad. This is the start of the series and it continues in the next books so judging its ending as it was end of story is a horrible mistake.
It's kind of book you can read really fast, mostly because it's not too complicated and yet manages to keep you attention
And again this is the part of book series with 10 books in it. Don't expect long story with bunch of adventures as if it was a standalone 1000 page book.
Also if you liked this book try Heku series from the same author since both stories share many similarities.

I give this book three stars. Really I want to give it less, because I am so frustrated with the second half of the book which spiraled down pretty badly, leaving me annoyed with the book and struggling to finish, and dissatisfied when I did. But I will give it a three for the plot and first half.

Kyrin is able to shift between dimensions and is on the run from men who are hunting her for her ability to use magic and other 'crimes' that she has committed.
While on the run, she shifts into the dimension of Paragoy, a land of plenty ruled by a peaceful god, Sithias.
Because when she first entered into Paragoy she had been fatally injured, and then was healed by the priests and the king of the land, she becomes an indentured servant for one year to repay the king for saving her life.
She finds the people there are kind, and offer her friendship, but because her own god Daemionis (a cruel and petty god) is ever watching her and has installed in her a complete distrust of all people she is too fearful to trust the people of Paragoy. She feels unworthy of normal human feelings such as compassion, tenderness and love.
In the dimension that Kyrin comes from men oppress and beat the women, often forcing them into marriage, then losing interest in them when they become pregnant and casting them out.
Kyrin has vowed never to marry or have children.
Things get complicated when she begins developing romantic feelings towards the king and he towards her.
She begins to feel even more conflict because the demands of her god Daemionis for human sacrifices bumps up against the peace loving god Sithias rules for his followers.
She must fulfill a year of service to the king of paragoy to be able to leave the kingdom, but can not help but be changed by the ways of the paragoy people.

Ok what I liked, I think the first half of this book was good. I liked the idea of a multidimensional universe, and shifters between the worlds gave us (the readers as well as the author) a chance to play out the differences of morals, values, and worship practices.
But I quickly got tired of the caustic views of Kyrin regarding the issues of marriage, love and children in spite of what she sees and learns from the people of paragoy.
The book covers two and a half years of time. It seemed to go on and on after the original concept of the book ran out.
Nearly the entire second half of the book was one long and painfully (to the reader) drawn out internal struggle of kyrin.
In the end the author failed to have kyrin grow into maturity and learn her choices were wrong (in short allow 'good to win') rather she (the author) I believe she did that so that the series could easily continue, but it was a bad choice if you ask me.
I was so frustrated that I spent soooooooooooooo much time on a book that in the end went horribly wrong. Ugh!
I was uncomfortable with the ending or really lack of ending so I went back to smashwords to look at the sample of the next book. Judging from the sample, the series continues with more of the same. Kyrin playing ignorant, helpless, and child-like in her maturity.
Do I recommend this book... no not really it was more frustrating read then it was fruitful one.

This a great series one that I would love to continue reading. When first start I saw some comparison with T.M. previous work The Heku Series but once the character start taking life it's something new and very different. Kyrin is a young woman that has been through an unthinkable horrible life she's a shifter that can run through dimensions and a magic user, which is illegal. She was promise to Mika and has been running since she was able to free herself from the marriage. Now she's been in the run from the Shadowmere Consortium and will go through any cost just to free from them. All dimensions are rotten and completely alienated from what was once the civilization. Kyrin follow god Daemionis a demon that reward her with pain and punishment in return of favors she might ask for. After running from the Shadowmere, she finds Paragoy dimension, a dimension that hasn't seen what the other has, this one has water, food and tranquility. Here she meets Alric the King of Valhara and start the process of trust something that she doesnt know due to the fact that in the other dimensions if you trust you die. This story like I said it is different from Heku but when you first start reading a resemblance can be found. Kyrin is a person of conviction, independent, does not trust anyone and rely only on herself, which you can compare at the beginning with Emily (Heku Series) but once you learn the character life you star to see the difference. Alric can also has a resemblance to Chevalier (Heku Series) but he lets Kyrin do what she needs to do even though he often try to stop her but who wouldnt, is not easy to see the woman you love leave and not now where she is, what she's going through or if she EVER will be back. Fynn can be compare to Kyle (Heku Series) he is the "best" friend but once you go through the back ground of the character you can see the difference for once he's not in love with her, he some how fear her and also has a great deal of respect for what she can do even w/o her magic. So even with some similarities this books are completely different from Heku series and I will recommend Paragoy Dimension (Dimensions Saga) and Shadowmere (Dimensions Saga). I hope that T.M. consider to continue the Series because it does have more to go on with. This books also have some editing issues but are not that much and in my case I dont care that much for it

ok so this piece of trash starts off with an interesting, even engaging, premise. then it turns into nothing more than a patriarchal rape fantasy where an older, wealthier, more powerful man takes advantage of the female protagonist under the deluded guise of *what is best for her* ; which of course means what the MAN thinks is best. he does not like her in "male" clothing and so dresses her as a doll in "proper lady" clothing, she DOES NOT LIKE to be touched but he forces her to accept him kissing her. that is not romance, that is a violation... and is rape. he KNOWS she does not like it but he keeps forcing himself on her. yes. forcing himself. he is a predator grooming his prey to be complicit in her own rape. do not forget, she is a virgin and knows nothing about sex; she is also very young. he is a rapist, plain and simple. anyone who cannot see this is a fool and i cannot believe this author would put the rape of a young girl out there and call it "romance". it is disgusting and appalling.

The book started off exciting but ended terribly. I found it hard to empathize with the main character and spent more time hating her then anything else. I would find it hard to believe that many people would enjoy reading books form this perspective. Where is the growth?? The character remains static throughout the entire novel and her "innocence" is soooo frustrating I'm surprised I even finished the book. She starts off strong, independent, and driven to free herself (for the past 6 years I believe) from a life of servitude, yet immediately accepts the King's dominance over her from the moment they meet. She doesn't make sense... That's just it. If the character would have grown more and remained closer to who she was in the first few pages of this book, the story would have been better. Instead, I'm left feeling frustrated and wishing I had read all the reviews before picking up this book.

The main character remained extremely unlikable throughout the whole book. It was not believable that the king or his God was "Ok" and allowed her killing and making sacrifices to her evil God. It was never explained why all of a sudden her evil God decided he did want her to marry the king after keeping her from any kind of human contact for so long.

At the end of the book I felt zero growth from any of the characters. I suppose the struggle through the whole book was for the girl to learn to trust, but guess what? At the end of the book I still didn't trust her! I still believed she could kill even her husband at any moment over something stupid.

What the interesting synopsis does not tell you is that the heroine is 16 years old.(or 21 ish) I really don't know or care! I would not have purchased the book if I had known this. The first couple of pages were actually okay and then the writing deteriorated so badly with grammar, vocab, and word-usage errors. In many ways it felt like a role playing game with flails and magic boots of all things. Picking up coins or other items to open portals. So, sorry but I just could not get through it so unable to recommend.

Started off with great promise then spiraled into a constant loop of mistrust, lack of growth and no true ending...I wanted to see the character evolve... SPOILER ALERT: If you are going to have the character get married due to the agreement of the deities...stop there. Then progress in the next book. By the time I got to the end (if you can call it that) I was frustrated and confused. Needed more clarity..and if the plan was a series..choose a better place to end
