The prodigious writings of Martin Gardner, from his Mathematical Games column in Scientific American to the 70-plus books he authored, had an enormous influence on the field of recreational mathematics. This book collects articles Gardner wrote for the MAA in the twenty-first century, together with other articles the MAA published from 1999 to 2012 that are inspired by his work. Eight of Gardner's articles are presented together they represent his playful and engaging approach to recreational mathematics, and the breadth of his interests, spanning geometry, number theory, graph theory, probability, and pseudo-science. Chiunque parli di matematica ricreativa non può non parlare di Martin Gardner. Quello che è incredibile è che la sua influenza è arrivata anche nel ventunesimo secolo. Questa raccolta contiene appunto vari testi pubblicati dal 2000 al 2010 che partono dai temi trattati da Gardner nella sua rubrica sullo Scientific American e presentano nuovi risultati che espandono quanto scritto al tempo. Ma ci sono anche alcuni articoli dello stesso Martin Gardner, che ben dopo aver compiuto novant'anni (era del 1914) continuava a collaborare con la Mathematical Association of America; aveva inviato l'ultimo suo racconto, Superstrings and Thelma, anch'esso presente in questa raccolta, qualche settimana prima della sua morte.
Come doveroso, gli argomenti trattati nel libro sono tra i più svariati: per chi ha una formazione matematica di base, è molto piacevole riprendere i temi che Gardner presentò mezzo secolo fa e scoprire i nuovi sviluppi teorici - e anche pratici... - che sono avvenuti. La lettura è sicuramente consigliata per tutti i fan della matematica ricreativa, e non preoccupatevi se non comprenderete tutto! Come dice lo stesso Gardner - la citazione la si trova nella prefazione - sul motivo per cui quello che scriveva era così chiaro:

I took no math in college. I’m like a person who loves music but can’t hum a tune or play an instrument. My understanding of math does not go beyond a minimal understanding of calculus. I hasten to add that I consider this one reason for the success of my Scientific American column. I had to work hard to understand whatever I wrote about, and this made it much easier for me to write in a way that readers could understand.
