4.75! Can I do this?? I really wanted to give this novel the highest possible rating. The mystery was top-notch, a very thightly woven mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end; once you've decided who the killer (or killers) is/are - you are wrong! I loved the suspense captured in this novel that only encompassed about three days - with the main stage (showplace?) at a private leather convention/party...and a corpse, or two. I enjoyed this novel greatly. Fan's of Zubro's past Paul Turner novels will NOT be disappointed. You'll enjoy a very solid mystery involving a leather fest, murder, cops, cover-ups, grudges, conspiracy, hate, innocents, you name it!!

Black And Blue And Pretty Dead Too is an incredible, timely mystery!

It was great to get back onto a murder case with Turner and Fenwick. I have read almost all of Mr. Zubro's books but still think the Paul Turner and Buck Fenwick series is best. A dirty cop is found murdered at an exclusive gay leatherman's party with a huge dildo up his butt and a string of orgasm balls down his throat. Turner and Fenwick are assigned to the case which leads them down dangerous trails on massive corruption in the Chicago Police Department. They are constantly blocked by the blue code of silence among the cops until they finally unravel the conspiracy. I love the banter between the gay Turner and the straight Fenwick that runs through the book. The scenes at the leather party were well written and while there was no sex in the book, it was talked about. The story flowed well and kept me guessing at the why did they do it right to the end. Zubro in true form turned out an excellent, fun mystery. I recommend all of Mark Richard Zubro's mysteries to anyone wanting a good light mystery.

This is one of the best of the Zubro mystery books. It's a good police procedural murder mystery with "local colour" from Chicago and the leather scene. It's a gritty story with some graphic details but nothing more than you'd see on a CSI TV show. One good thing about it is that Zubro has cut back on the potificating that he has gotten into in some of his books: for example always complaining about school administrators etc. His target in this book was police corruption and it was worked into the plot to good advantage.I think he probably took advice to give his sermonizing a rest, and it produced a better book. The ending was slightly convoluted and complicated, but it probably helped make the story more interesting. This book certainly is much better than the previous one in this series. Well done!

In the 10th Paul Turner mystery we find Detectives Turner & Fenwick investigating the brutal murder of a homophobic and corrupt police officer at a gay leather party. The cop had plenty of enemies and yet,Paul and Buck find themselves receiving threats by other officers who seem to feel the man's own partner might have done the deed. This is a ho-hum mystery, and I'm finding the longer these mysteries become (this mystery has 44 chapters) the more convoluted and foolish it becomes.I miss when Mr.Zubro allowed us into Paul's interactions with his two sons and lover now referred to as his husband. The shorter mysteries to me were the better written and most fun to read in this series. It's still fun to read the banter between the two detectives, but this story just seems like a mess.

Overall enjoyable. Liked the characters--they were complex and real. The writing style was choppy, in this reader's opinion. Mostly this was from the overuse of dialogue tags. Not necessary to use a "he said/she said" after every line. This became far too distracting.

Aside from a few minor issues, I recommend this. It kept me engaged and had enough twists that it managed to surprise me along the way.

This, the 10th book in the Zubro's Paul Turner series, has well drawn characters and familiar Chicago locales. It is an interesting story of murder and police corruption set against the backdrop of Chicago's S&m subculture. The police corruption angle is familiar territory in the age of Law & Order but it is convincingly created. The S&M is more referential than graphic so it is unlikely there is anything here to offend even the most conservative readers

This book wasn't bad, but it also wasn't great. I didn't think the mystery in this book was all that difficult to work out-I think it was pretty clear who did it from the beginning.

I also thought some of the nicer things with this series-Paul's relationship with his partner and his children was a little short shifted and that is one thing I most enjoy about this series.

Absolutely bored out of my mind. There was no character... anything. Just a dull, blank police procedural, lacking any depth or emotion. Turner's lover didn't play much of a role either - he received merely a few minor scenes. I skimmed through the second half.

Enjoyed it. Excellent mystery/police procedural. I love that there is a gay protagonist with no sex but also no doubt that he is very gay. Very well done characters on top of the good mystery.

Otro libro más a la lista de terminados por disciplina. Descripciones pobres, trama mediocre, personajes planos y final aburrido. Ni para darle una palomita por ser tema de gremio.

It is good to have Fenwick and Turner back in a new book. I really enjoy the way Mark Zubro writes.
