Big ambitions, big bullies and big problems

When 13-year-old Brummie babe, Destiny enters the Bright Sparks beauty contest behind her (ex-model) mum's back, she is determined to prove she has talent and brains - and that she is not just a pretty face.

Together with her cousin, Keisha and best friends, Ebyan and Bee, Destiny deals with every challenge life throws at her - including scary eyeball-to-eyeball confrontations with bully-girl Bella and secret winks from heart-throb, Joel.

i got this book for christmas from my nan (thx nan) and i read (or ate? don't people say that?) this book in one portion. It's definitely not a popular book, and I look online and there was second one for keisha but that's it! These books had potential, then I saw the author had died of cancer. May you rest in peace.
Skin deep is written from the perspective or destiny who decides to join the Bright sparks competition like her new friend bee. BUT there is a mahoosive twist here ( which i expected since i did the quiz at the end when i first started reading and there were*spoiler* pages telling us what bells palsy and a stroke was *SPOILER FINished) so this would be a good book for a child who has recently experienced bells palsy or don't think there very pretty.

my big problem with this book is how every sentence that keisha says ends in like and it doesn't even make sense sometimes. I know girls who used like 3 time a sentence sometimes but its never at the end its like say "I hate cats like" and that it. I wouldn't care if it was used in the middle or something but it really annoyed me cause of how unrealistic it was. And was it with destiny having a mini mint every other page?

and Eyban did't really appear much in this book she was working in her mums shop most the time but when she was there she didn't really say anything and i understood why when keshia walked out and Eyban said i should go after i am her best friend after all. that made me realise oh destiny does t have a bestie.

pretty simple book it won't make you be overcome with joy for it but still recommend

Skin Deep tells the story of Destiny, a 13 year old who enters a competition which is all about beauty but a competition that focuses not just on outer beauty but also on the beauty inside and the talents that people have. After taking part in the photo shoot and everything looking to be going to plan though Destiny has a major problem that is going to cause her to focus on inner beauty more than ever and see her have to decide if she should walk away from the competition or challenge the things society considers to be accepted for beauty.

This is a heart-warming story that focuses on friendship, loving yourself and also on never giving up, it is wonderfully written by an author who was a true talent and is sadly missed by many in the literary world. If you haven't had a chance to check out work by Malaika Rose Stanley then this is a great way to find out just why she is considered to be so great.
