I never thought that in the year 2021 I would find myself enjoying a cheesy cold war spy thriller (if this isn’t an effect of the pandemic)! Except for the clichéd portrayal of women as the 007 side chicks with physiques made to perfection and morals not-like-your-traditional-women’s, I love how the book shows that in the game of diplomacy almost everyone is a douche bag, whether you’re an American or Russian, a French or German, an Israeli or Bolivian (or one just had to be during the cold war).
The book is literate and well written but is much too long for this type of novel. There are any number of lengthy digressions that add nothing to the story. Who wants to read a four-page description of the Crazy Horse Saloon that was always Paris's biggest tourist trap? But the real problem is that although all the pieces are there, the story never comes together and grabs the attention of the reader. There's no real suspense.
