The Seven Visions of Bull Lodge: As Told by His Daughter, Garter Snake

Rate this book
The strength of the narrative is the rich detail of ritual fasting, sacrifices, vision experiences, the practices of healing. By describing ritual in the context of a man's life, the book gives a uniquely historical understanding of the dynamics of traditional religious life. It provides deeper understanding of the Gros Ventres' way of life and gives a valuable comparative perspective on plains Indian religion. ―Raymond J. DeMallie, Western Historical Quarterly

George Horse Capture is field manager of Fort Belknap Ventures. Inc., a tribal enterprise to develop and market traditional Indian art. At present he is helping to establish a tribal museum

I read this book for my Native American Studies Class. It was interesting in how it revealed the inner ceremonies of the Medicine Man Bull Lodge of the Gros Ventre Indian tribe. I also liked how it added meaning to the buttes and peaks of the area north of where we live. I can't say I would have read this just for fun, but for assigned reading it was okay.

This book clearly depicts the way the spirits pick an individual, and not the other way around. It accurately describes the sequence of events of the "chosen" individual. Very important book. Written about a Gros Vente, by a Gros Ventre and published by a Gros Ventre.

Existential, spiritual, religious, philosophical, but most importantly, historical!

I can't believe some of the stuff this guy did to find himself!

Eerie, spooky, chilling, and raw. It will make you cringe as you fall asleep.

so far, very enthralling and difficult to put down. I kept dozing because I was so tired, but tried my hardest to stay awake because it is just so damn interesting.

Amazing story of the life of a Gros Ventre Medicine man. The trials that these men put themselves through to achieve the life they believed was there calling is inspiring and overwhelming.
