Liv Spencer is the writing duo of Jen Knoch & Crissy Calhoun.
Jen Knoch is an editor at ECW Press and the founder of the Keepin’ it Real Book Club, where you’ll find her thoughts on books she reads and on other book-related adventures. Crissy Calhoun works with Jen at ECW Press, as its managing editor, and she also writes companion guides to The Vampire Diaries (the Love You to Death series).
One fine day while toiling at ECDubs HQ, Jen and Crissy decided they should join forces to write books together about subjects they love — hey, half the work, double the glory! — and Liv Spencer was born. (Fun fact: our pen name is a combo of Olivia and Spencer, the children of one of ECW’s pop-culture-minded bosses.)
Despite book-writing being kind of a heck of a lot of work, we can’t seem to stop — there’s nothing better than diving into something we’re fans of and emerging 60,000 words later looking a little haggard but feeling even more in love with our subject than when we pitched the idea to the editorial team at ECW. And once our little books go out into the world, it is the best, most nerve-wracking thing to hear what readers think!
Thanks to Goodreads I was able to read this book...and let me tell you; it is great! Any PLL fan should read this book. It has tons of information, even things I didn't know--and I know a LOT about the books and TV show! If you're debating whether or not to read it, I would definitely recommend it. Insightful!
I liked this ! It's pretty comprehensive and I really like how much behind-the-scenes sort of stuff was in this (tbh I didn't even read the recaps having just watched the show) I will say it's interesting more than anything to see how much perspective of the show has changed so drastically since those first two seasons. omg. There was SO much faith in the writers and I wonder if they'd still stand by what they said today. Also, everyone is defending Aria and Ezra, which is also interesting because we all know how Ian Harding feels now ("America's favourite pedophile")- I wonder, did his opinion change with the times or was he sort of biting his tongue to keep the paychecks coming.
I did find that although there were little jokes here and there the overall tone was pretty dry. It's hard not to compare this to things that are available now like the Mike's Mic video recap which are just so much more fun.
I absolutely loved this book! Now, I have read the entire series through twice, and I have seen the show one and a half times. I do not see how anyone who was not a fan of the show (seasons 1 and 2) would enjoy this book. I enjoyed it because I knew every single character and actor mentioned. Just a super fun read!
Perfect for HUGE Pretty Little Liars fans! After you watch each episode of season 1 and 2, you have a chapter all about the episode which includes things such as slip ups (we're not perfect so there are always mistakes in episodes!), back to the books (Liv compares the similarities and differences between the episode and the books), Q & A (important questions are asked at the end of each chapter that need answers), and even biographies of each character in the show. If you re-watched the episodes and read the book afterwards like I did, you will most likely see things that you haven't seen the first time around, including things that will help to figure out who "A" is and what really happened the night Alison supposedly was murdered. I really hope that Liv Spencer writes a second book for season 3 and 4 since season 4 has been wrapped up recently. I would definitely buy it! I recommend this book to any PLL fan out there! :)
This is my plea to you, Liv Spencer, to please please write a recap book for seasons 3 through 5. This book is mostly just an episode recap for all of seasons 1 and 2, but it includes so much behind-the-scenes information that it makes it worth the while. The episode recaps are done in a unique way... They try to stay interesting while not revealing much about each episode. You'll remember the episode plot points if you've seen PLL lots of times, but otherwise it is hard to tell what is going on from what is written here. Nevertheless, if you're an obsessive fan like me, you have to own this book.
Good companion book! I wish a little bit that the episode analyses were a little more in depth like in the Vampire Diaries companion, but overall I liked it. Especially liked the "PLL IRL", that was fun, and the extra credit section for each episode. Wondering when the next book will come out... since this book covered the first two seasons and we are halfway through the third season, maybe will have to wait until after the fourth season?
I absolutely loved the show Pretty Little Liars so I knew I had to pick this book up. I loved getting to hear and see all about the behind the scene things and learn more about the actors and actresses. Definitely a great read for anyone that enjoyed the show!
A must-have guide for all fans of Pretty Little Liars. Would definitely recommend reading this whilst watching the first season as you get a breakdown of each episode. I really wished I knew about this book when I started watching the show! Loved reading the real life segments as it felt like I was reading the “Trivia” section on IMDB. Very easy to read as it did feel like I was reading an online article. You don’t need to have read the books although there is a mention of who A is in the book version of the story. Would recommend if you’re a fan of the show.
I really loved this book. My little sister suggested this book to me and i just fell in love. It was full of suspense, drama, and mystery. Even a little romance. The author was quite desciptive with the crimes, and events that was going on. Moreso the events than the characters, but the way the events were wrote said alot about the characters doing or participating in the actions.
Yes the author use the craft that I seen well. However, I wish he would have used more descriptive adjectives for the characters, therefore, I would have a better depiction of them in my head.
I would suggest builing up the characters as well as the events and crimes.
I like I he focused on the deceit. That what gave the book that suspense and mystery feel.
It was good to see how the Pretty Little Liars TV show was created - I love both the books & the show - how the 4 main characters of Aria, Hanna, Emily & Spencer were cast as well as short biographies of them and a lot of the other cast members. They talked about make-up, music, everything. But mostly, it was like an episode guide for the first 2 seasons, so you could read it and know what was going on in the show :) And I liked the pictures :)
