Our vows were exchanged. We had our whole lives planned out. And even brought our son into this world. Until hours later… when everything stopped, and you were suddenly gone.
Life was perfect, until the day the only man she had ever been with, the man who had stolen her heart at the tender age of seventeen, was taken away before his time.
Desperate, angry, and unable to heal, Adriana hits rock bottom and is forced to seek help for the sake of her son. What she doesn’t expect is a friendship from an unlikely source—Julian Baker, her best friend’s ex-fiancé.
Julian is every bit the man she isn’t expecting to walk into her life. Intelligent, witty, and extremely handsome. Their unique friendship soon turns into a forbidden relationship. As lovers, they form a bond that must remain hidden from their family and friends, but secrets can only be kept for so long.
Adriana’s brother, Lex, loathes Julian and will stop at nothing to break them apart.
Will Lex’s controlling nature and overprotective stance on his wife drive Adriana to end another great love in her life? Or will she finally heal with a man who never intended to steal her heart?
**This title was previously published as Adriana. It has been extensively rewritten, re-edited, and has a new cover.
Born and bred in Sydney Australia, Kat T. Masen is a mother to four crazy boys and wife to one sane husband. Growing up in a generation where social media and fancy gadgets didn’t exist, she enjoyed reading from an early age and found herself immersed in these stories. After meeting friends on twitter who loved to read as much as she did, her passion to write began and the friendships continued on despite the distance. “I’m known to be crazy and humorous. Show me the most random picture of a dog in a wig and I’ll be laughing for days.”
Adrianas part I really liked. I think her and Julians story were way better than Lex and Charlies. They had beautiful ups and downs and felt really natural at times. Their connection was really well written.
Part two of Julian and Adrianas story. This second half of their story did pick up for me enough to go up a star. I do love getting g more of Lex and Charlie so that’s why I keep reading. Books one and 2 are my favs.
Ok, this has been my favorite of the first four books, but that isn't saying much because it still only warrants 3 stars from me. I'm sure there will be spoilers in here at some point... you know, at the end of the next paragraph...
Like Chasing Her (the 3rd book and Julian's perspective for him/Adriana), I liked that this book was primarily Adriana's perspective and didn't switch a bunch. It did have a chapter or two (I can't remember if it was all one chapter of him or broken into two) with Lex's perspective when (spoiler alert) Andy was kidnapped. I felt this was unnecessary and the author did not switch back to Adriana's perspective... after the very obvious "Lex" chapter(s), I'm suddenly reading about Andy being between "us" and I was thinking Julian and Lex and thought it was very odd at that point... until I realized it was back to Adriana's perspective. Overall, I didn't feel the change in character perspective was necessary. Now, I will say the end of the book had a bonus scene from Charlie after she/Lex found out about Julian/Adriana and that was a cute lil scene. I'm glad it was an ending bonus scene though. Pick a character and tell their story. The end. blah.
Anyway, aside from that... the overall story was ok. Mind you, I'm not saying it was good or the best I've ever read - no where near that, in fact. But it was ok. I'm not one to DNF a book, if I was, this entire series would have stopped in Book 1 for me. But as it stands, I got the whole series from KU and so here I am... reading them all with some parts more painful than others.
Ok - back to the story. Adriana has many insecurities and is still dealing with her husbands loss - though it's been 3 years now. Which, is also interesting on it's own because I could see how she did this downward trend right after Elijah passed away, but a couple years later it seems to be a bit odd... hmm. As I think about overall timeline now it doesn't quite add up well. The books (#3-4) definitely cover a 6 month timeline when he's in Australia and they cover maybe another 6 months before/after that timeframe. But when she went to Australia (that's right, around the 4 months mark, she went to Australia to see Julian because she missed him) and she admitted then it was around 3 years since she was intimate with anyone (Elijah). So there was maybe a year prior to that (and that's being generous) where she was seeking help for fresh cuts on her wrists? Something smells fishy here on the timeline. It's not like she was in the group for help when Andy was a baby - he was already a talking younger child/toddler when the two of them got together in group. So year, that doesn't help the characters stories and realism.
ok, that aside... she's going through stuff and Elijah was her first and only everything in life. So moving on without him is difficult. But she also is very insecure and hung up on Charlie and everyone wants Charlie. When, in fact, Julian admitted at one point yes, he wanted her but she was a band-aid and not real long-term for him and that Charlie and Lex belong together. And Lex of course is married to Charlie so naturally he's going to be all about Charlie. But Adriana doesn't see that Julian is all about her. She thinks the worst of him every. dang. time! They were at Rocky's costume party and Julian was talking to Charlie (who was dressed up provocatively and Adriana was surprised Lex let her dress like that) and Adriana saw them across the room laughing and chatting together and assumed naturally Lex was probably right and they missed each other and wanted to be together! (So not the case) But then Adriana took her insecurities out on everyone and lashed out at Charlie for being a slut (she's not) and for Lex and Julian always wanting Charlie (Julian doesn't) and Julian ultimately ended it with her. Turns out, Lex had Charlie dress like that on purpose - to taunt Julian as to what was his (Lex's) and what Julian couldn't have and to further drive a wedge between Adriana and Julian (that was the the only good thing that came out of Lex's perspective that could have easily been revealed in Julian's perspective). And Julian later revealed the issue he had at the party was that his old drug dealer was there and so he made it look like he was having fun and happy while chatting with Charlie b/c as long as he was happy looking, his dealer wouldn't try to entice him with drugs again. And Julian also admitted it was too much like old times that weren't good - Charlie being his obsession/drug of choice and then the dealer there too... so he had to get out of there. You know, things that Adriana would have known had she not been so insecure about everything.
Lex's whole attitude got annoying. I didn't like him in his own books let alone these books. Talk about insecure. He's gotta screw Charlie every 5 seconds after finding out about Adriana/Julian? Really? No one wants to hear about that - not Julian or Adriana. Sigh.
The book was also all over the place and, as I found with the first two books in the series, just kinda jumped into what was happening and didn't make sense until after reading another page or two... towards the end of the book, they're traveling to a remote country somewhere to help medically. With Julian's journalist background going to these countries, and Lex/Adriana's father, I think his name is Henry, being in the medical field and wanting to make an impact, they all went to one of the countries and then Henry was saying something like, "you can now take my granddaughter" and I'm like, what? what did I miss now?? But no, I didn't miss anything, the author gave background after the fact. It's not a mystery novel.... it's a romance. Get with the genre.
Let us not forget to talk about Andy's grandmother, Mary Jean (Elijah's mom). She was as overbearing as they come. I get it. She lost her son and her grandson is the last living tie to him, but calling every day practically was a bit much. And then asking Adriana for $5k? Woah! Seriously?! For what?? Turns out to kidnap her own grandson! What?? Lady, you're crazy! Andy getting kidnapped was one way to bring Julian and Adriana back together, but an unrealistic and unnecessary one. For starters, Andy is verbal and knows his family. Why would he go to a stranger? We already knew he was shy in group settings around a bunch of people he didn't know. But suddenly, he's going to go with a strange old man? Really? Come on, now. And then for Grandma to leave a "dear john" note after an OD on pills? WTF?? No. So much no. No apology for taking the kid or putting him in harms way? Are you kidding me right now? No. Why am I giving this book a 3 star review again?? Now I'm second guessing the rating and thinking it should be two stars. *eye roll* But seriously, this is the part that was in Lex's perspective b/c he went with Julian to get a lead.... what would have happened to Andy had Julian not had connections in the drug world? I mean, he had to buy cocaine to get the information about Andy. How messed up is that?? I'll give that chapter some credit to Lex - he disposed of the stuff before it could be an issue for Julian and he admitted to having a 6 months stint doing drugs too in a dark time of his life - after losing Charlie and discovering his own wife was pregnant with another man's baby. But again, that could have been shared using Julian's perspective. I didn't care for the multiple perspectives in the other books either. So that carries over to this book too - keep it in the characters the book is intended. In Lex/Charlie's second book - Eric had a lot of chapters.... why? Stick with the main guys. Not just mixing up the story with any character you want. ugh
Oh! And Charlie! She complains about getting knocked up again but she could have insisted on the condoms or gotten an IUD or some other form of birth control. So all we B&C'ing about getting knocked up is annoying!
So what did I like about the book? Because man, that was a lot of what I didn't like. ha. The growth of all of the characters by the end of the book was good. And that Julian/Adriana finally realized they really can't live without each other. I enjoyed them expanding their family through adoption, though I would have liked to see Julian man up and propose first. But whatever. He needs to grow a pair still apparently since she's the one who suggested marriage. Lex grew as too which was nice to see him slowly being less of an ass and even Eric/Tristan being quite smitten with each other was a nice growth too by the end of the book.
I think that's all... Again, I would never recommend these books. I just can't DNF a book. lol
Let's see what the next book - Kate's - holds for us.
i have been trying to read this book for 2 weeks, it was good but i just think i need a break from reading this series. Lex was annoying as hell in this book, by the behavior in this book you would’ve thought i was reading about 5 year olds. i’m happy Adriana got her perfect ending though, she deserves it 🫶
If you loved all the characters from Into the darkness & Into the light, here is your chance to spend some more time with them. Adriana's had it tough; but will the ever so dashing Julian be able to give her everything she wants?
To understand the full story, I strongly suggest reading Into the darkness, Into the light and Julian first.
Ok this one is the best at of all the ones in this series! Perfect tragedy to love! It felt rushed but at the same time, tragedies and healing can truly make love blossom at super speed..I love how Julian healed. He went through so much and he deserved a happy ending. Yes he was super creepy and weird in the last book, but im so happy he got his happy ending. And Adriana is one of my absolute favorites! She is freaking awesome who get dealt a shitty hand. Im so so glad she found her happiness again. Elijah wouldn't have wanted her to forever be alone and unhappy. Julian and her are great together. And they both helped each other heal.
Binged. Just like the others in this series. This book we got to see Adriana’s POV. There was one chapter from the POV of Lex which was nice. SPOILER::: I’m still hesitant on the relationship between Julian and Adriana. I cannot relate to the characters, so maybe I’m not seeing it the right way. This whole series so far is spicy, but you also get so much plot and learn so much about each character. Love it, and can’t wait to read the last two!
Forbidden second chance romance, single POV, recovery, loss.
I definitely enjoyed book 4 way more. There wasn’t all that relationship toxicity like Lex & Char. When Adriana got jealous, she didn’t go running off to try to make Julian jealous. There was that one incident at the bar with River but she was talking to him before she even saw Julian, so it doesn’t count lol
Adriana is very self absorbed & extremely insecure and for the most part I understood. However, towards the end of the book it got really annoying but, I am very much like Adriana so I get it.
Book 4 kept you so intrigued & I read it within a few hours. I couldn’t put it down.
This entire series is hell-bent on trying to convince you what lex and Charlie did wasn’t bad.
Spoiler alert! It was.
Cheating is wrong, and this entire book series has some of the most vile unrepentant rampant cheating that I have ever had a displeasure of reading in a fucking book. Funny enough the words “cheat” “cheating” and “cheated” are never used, not even once. In the last 4 books. Almost as if the author doesn’t want you to label the two offenders as such.
What’s worse, in this book the one person who did not cheat, who did not encourage cheating or attempt to cover it up, is framed in such a way, whilst already at his lowest, that HE is the offending party. To be perfectly clear given what happened to him, Julian has nothing to apologize for. Alex and Charlie ruined his life and they continually throw it in his face. They are terrible people. They are whores. I don’t even believe Adriana deserved happy ending after considering she knew about the affair, and said nothing to the man she’s supposedly in love with now. And for that matter, it seems like everybody knew the affair was going on. No one told him, and they expect him to bend over backwards to accommodate the two whores that broke his heart. Eric‘s a real piece of shit, considering he practically orchestrated the events. To attempt to equate what Alex and Charlie did to what Julian did is a croc of shit. And no way in hell does getting rid of drugs make you even for having you wife and child’s lives saved. Fuck off book. Lex is a absolute douche. Period. And Charlie is a straight up slut. To have this book tell us that Julian is the one that must be forgiven, sorry but I call bullshit. Fuck off Kat.
And of course you gotta sneak in the last bonus scene with Lex and Charlie, because that’s what it’s all about really, the two most awful characters I’ve had to read.
If you have a soul, do not read this book, do not read any of these books. The good guys lose the bad guys win that’s the story and it’s garbage.

This book and the entire series have completely knocked me off my feet! The storylines are captivating, and the spice level is just right. This series has given me all the feels, from laughter to tears and everything in between. I love all the characters, and it’s fantastic that we get to see them throughout the series, even when they’re not the main focus.
The emotional journey the author takes you on is incredible, especially with Julian and Adriana. Their pain and experiences are so well depicted that you feel every moment with them. The book beautifully shows that even when you feel like a lost soul, there are people who can help pull you out of your darkest times. It dives deep into themes of love, forgiveness, new beginnings, and the hope for a happily ever after. I found myself constantly rooting for these characters, fingers crossed that things would work out the way we all want.
I jumped into this book right after Lex and Charlie's story and was not disappointed. The dynamic between this group of friends and their banter is so engaging and adds a lightness that balances out the heavier emotional moments. Julian’s story broke my heart a little as we explored his journey alongside another broken soul, but watching them find each other was beautiful. The characters are so well-developed that you can't help but fall in love with them and cheer for their happiness.
Absolutely loved this entire series so far. If you haven’t started it yet, begin from the very first book—you won’t regret it. This series is truly awesome!
Chasing Him, the fourth book in Kat T. Masen's Dark Love Series, is a must-read if you've followed the series so far. It picks up right where Chasing Her left off, with Julian off in Australia and Adriana left to face her struggles alone.
The book is packed with emotions—happiness, angst, grief, and passion. Adriana's still dealing with the loss of her husband Elijah and trying to figure out if she can really move on. Julian’s grappling with his past and his feelings for Adriana, while they both face obstacles like Adriana's distrustful brother Lex and their own insecurities.
Masen does a fantastic job of blending humor and heartache, making you laugh and cry as Adriana and Julian navigate their complicated relationship. The story’s ending ties everything together perfectly, with plenty of dramatic twists to keep you hooked. And it's oooooh so steamy! THE BALCONY SCENE. AGH.
If you've been invested in Adriana and Julian’s journey, you won’t want to miss this final chapter. It’s a powerful and emotional wrap-up to their story.
Review of Chasing Him by Kat T. Masen * * * * * We were left off with - shockingly - a cliff hanger! The second installment opens up on the acceptance of the relationship, and dealing with Adriana's psycho brother. YAY!
Julian is in Australia, achieving one of his long awaited dreams. Adriana said she would wait for him. However, she has grown restless. She wants to be with him now. He's just as in need as she is. They want together now. The only trouble is, they are still keeping their relationship a secret, and it is taking a toll on their blossoming love. Adriana is still unsure of how Julian's love for Charlie is - is he playing pretend or does his heart now belong to her? Now with her Andy also in the picture, how will this little family accept its possible newest member? Well, that remains to be seen when the worst thing possible happens to Adriana once again...having forces unit and differences put aside. Can this happy ending really work?
What a climax to the near end of the book! Yeah, that is bound to sort everything out! The betrayal! the poor little innocent soul! The unfortunate employee! Loved how Eric has his time to shine in this romance. So many dirty jokes! Great to see how - even when unexpected - these two ended up with their happy ending and can find peace in one another.
Adriana is trying to make it from day to day after her husband, the love of her life, and father of her son, Andy, passes away from a terminal illness. She is angry, devastated, and suicidal. So, she joins a support group, knowing that she needs help, but she does not want to tell her overprotective brother, Lex, or his wife, Charlie, her best friend.
In this support group, she makes an unexpected friendship with Julian Baker, the man that stalked her best friend after she broke off their engagement.
Julian joins the support group because he is obsessed with Charlie, and is making dangerous decisions, such as breaking into Lex and Charlie's home when they are not there. He has spiraled into a state of addiction and obsession that he can't come back from on his own. Also, he is homeless.
Adriana and Julian are a hot mess. Honestly, I couldn't see how anyone would leave a child in their care. But someone did, and when Adriana's mother-in-law kidnaps Andy from school, then kills herself in front of him in a seedy motel, I am even more concerned as to why this child is still with these crazy people...
The personal growth was on point. Adriana has to take the leap of faith in deciding to trust Julian and allow herself the grace to move on from Elijah and begin a relationship with only the factors of her son, her brother’s hatred of him and the fact that he used to be engaged to her sister in law to contend with.
Lex is a controlling manipulative ass as always (four books in and I only like him for his ability to care for his children and Nephew, standing up at the school event as Andy is missing a father was heartwarming at least).
Jealousy is the hardest thing to overcome but I am so glad Adrian’s overcomes it and believes Julian when he tells her he loves her, and not because of her friendship with Charlie but for her.
I was not expecting Andy to be kidnapped but at least it caused Julian and Lex to put their distaste aside. This HEA was one I was happy with and in my opinion Julian and Adriana’s story was much better than Lex and Charlie’s.
This review contains spoilers: TW for this book is sucide!!!
Ok wow!! Julian and Adriana deserve all the happiness in the world! Reading about Elijah's death and the reason he stopped fighting for his life i kind of understand! It's hard to go through the pain mentally and physically and seeing the love of your life carrying your child go through it so Elijah made a decision which of course (i truly understand) why Adriana can't cope up with it! Charlie and Lex are forever one of my favourites but, Lex behaviour is uncalled for! I love how understanding Charlie is and trying her best to console Lex.. Mary Jean's death broke me the note i see the loss of the mother phantom, she lost her husband and she lost her son! I was pissed she involved Andy but i kind of understand she needed his son's blood for the last time!! (Writing this review is really hard but this is one of the ways i can process this book) Book made me laugh and cry mostly cry but the best cry!!!!
Because of the last novella - I almost didn’t read this one. But I was hoping for some redemption for Julian.
Although I found it to be a good book where the characters are torn between grief and loss and also trying to crawl back from rock bottom it just felt a bit too much.
And I swear at one point charolotte wanted to break the news and Julian said he wasn’t ready so what was up with the whole Julian saying he wasn’t going to wait around and be a secret any more…!?! Confusing.
Also… like I know that Elijah didn’t tell anyone he was relapsing and didn’t want to stress her out during IVF… but it was really messed up to go through the process and let her get pregnant and know you refused cancer treatment and you weren’t going to live. Like I have A LOT of feelings about this and I don’t blame Charolette for being messed up about it.. although it’s not like he didn’t WANT to fight for her. He just knew he COULDN’T …. But still leaving her like that.. yikes I am not sure I agree with that storyline at all. I was mad for days about it!
Yes and yes Julian still my favourite character till the end . Adriana went through a lot i mean losing a husband 😭i wouldn't wish that on anyone. But the time she started seeing Julian i was so happy and Julian is such a sweet guy i just hope i meet a Julian in my life one day. Well Adriana was justvso insecure and Julian was so patient with her i mean anyone would have left her and it was so sad that everyone kept bringing the past which he so much wanted to forget and he had enough i was happy he left cause you only miss a good thing when its gone and don't even get me started with lex like someone had to put him in his place he was so insecure just like the sister but Adriana was better. I was dreading reading the part when they all found out but any way it all worked out for them. I love you Kat you are slowly becoming my favourite author 😍😍😍

Adriana’s and Julian’s story was way better than Charlie and lex’s! I loved the emotion in this book and how deeply Adriana and Julian were connected to each other. I liked Lex in the first two books but after reading this one it made me not like him. He’s just too possessive and controlling and childish🤮. Also I wish we got more of an explanation on why Julian felt the way he did when hearing about Charlie and lex while being in a relationship with Adriana while stating he’s never felt the way he does for her for anyone else. At some points it did seem that Lex was right about him being with Adriana to get close to Charlie, especially after the part where he admits to everyone he thought about how much Charlie liked to be F***ed. I needed more of him opening up about why he felt that way. Instead he was closed off and only gave a short reason later on.

This book was really good!! However, I think I liked the writing and the previous one best and I wish we got both POV’s in both books.
I love that we get more POV’s from previous characters.
Adriana is so strong and I am so happy that she and Julian get their own happily ever after!
I loved Adriana in the other books but when it came to her story, her personality was very different due to the grief she was experiencing. I love that she was able to overcome that and be a better version of herself.
Andy was PRECIOUS!!! 🥹
I felt like it was going so good but the ending felt a little rushed.
Anyway, I love Julian & Alex pissed me off so much in this book but I totally understood him if that makes sense??
Anyway, I love this author’s work and I cannot wait to read the next ones!! It’s a ride I’m loving so far! 💚💚
I loved this! Even though there were many lows, there were also many highs. Like how Andy took to Julian so fast, there’s just something soo beautiful about how a person bonds with someone else’s kid, kids don’t lie & I love that Andy & Julian’s relationship was great from the start. Of course I expected Lex’s reaction, he also had every right to feel how he did but I’m glad it worked out in the end. Last but not least, Adriana, I understand how hard it had been for her to move forward, everything with Julian was a brand new experience for her & of course its frightening. In the end, communication, understanding & patience was key & I loved them soo much. And boy oh boy, that smut was HOT HOT HOT! Who’s next? I’m excited😍
Wow, I just now realized how tough that was to read. Adriana & Julian, who would’ve thought. Never in a million years did it cross my mind that this would happen, but here we are. If anyone deserves a second chance at love, it’s Adriana. She was stripped of everything when the love of her life passed away. That was hard to read. I swear I cried like baby. It feels like I grew with these characters since the beginning of Lex & Charlie and now they have the next generation wreaking havoc and boy oh boy, I can just imagine what it would be like when this next gen have their own series 🥰
