Books I Have Loved

Rate this book
An extraordinary book written under extraordinary circumstances. Osho, the enlightened master who has over 600 books to his name, speaks not in his usual lecture hall to thousands of seekers, but in an intimate and eccentric setting to only four disciples. He tells stories and gives poetic and profound descriptions of books thad helped him "...when nothing else was shining in the darkness." Osho talks about 168 books in all, from the great seers of the Far East and Indian mystics, to Nietzsche and Western philosophers and novelists. Here is a whole rainbow of the world's literary genius, woven together with wonderfully humorous personal comments and swings of the Zen stick from Osho to his notetakers.

Rajneesh (born Chandra Mohan Jain, 11 December 1931 – 19 January 1990) and latter rebranded as Osho was leader of the Rajneesh movement. During his lifetime he was viewed as a controversial new religious movement leader and mystic.

In the 1960s he traveled throughout India as a public speaker and was a vocal critic of socialism, Mahatma Gandhi, and Hindu religious orthodoxy.

Rajneesh emphasized the importance of meditation, mindfulness, love, celebration, courage, creativity and humor—qualities that he viewed as being suppressed by adherence to static belief systems, religious tradition and socialization.

In advocating a more open attitude to human sexuality he caused controversy in India during the late 1960s and became known as "the sex guru".

In 1970, Rajneesh spent time in Mumbai initiating followers known as "neo-sannyasins". During this period he expanded his spiritual teachings and commented extensively in discourses on the writings of religious traditions, mystics, and philosophers from around the world. In 1974 Rajneesh relocated to Pune, where an ashram was established and a variety of therapies, incorporating methods first developed by the Human Potential Movement, were offered to a growing Western following. By the late 1970s, the tension between the ruling Janata Party government of Morarji Desai and the movement led to a curbing of the ashram's development and a back taxes claim estimated at $5 million.

In 1981, the Rajneesh movement's efforts refocused on activities in the United States and Rajneesh relocated to a facility known as Rajneeshpuram in Wasco County, Oregon. Almost immediately the movement ran into conflict with county residents and the state government, and a succession of legal battles concerning the ashram's construction and continued development curtailed its success.

In 1985, in the wake of a series of serious crimes by his followers, including a mass food poisoning attack with Salmonella bacteria and an aborted assassination plot to murder U.S. Attorney Charles H. Turner, Rajneesh alleged that his personal secretary Ma Anand Sheela and her close supporters had been responsible. He was later deported from the United States in accordance with an Alford plea bargain.[

After his deportation, 21 countries denied him entry. He ultimately returned to India and a revived Pune ashram, where he died in 1990. Rajneesh's ashram, now known as OSHO International Meditation Resort and all associated intellectual property, is managed by the Zurich registered Osho International Foundation (formerly Rajneesh International Foundation). Rajneesh's teachings have had a notable impact on Western New Age thought, and their popularity has increased markedly since his death.

It is an interview that had been recorded by Osho disciple in 1984 everyday Osho talks about his top 10 books that he read , from 150000 books he read ,he chooses 168 books that are really touched him personally he also gives a critic and share his opinion on the book and sometimes on the writer of the book too; and in simple way he described his experience and impression in every book .

He read a lot of books from different languages and cultures some of them considered rare to find or rarely read or known by people these current days . Most of these books are taken from Sufi literature.

And as Arabian I was really happy that he considered Gibran Kahlil Gibran as his beloved writer as well as he mentioned The Book of Mirdad by Mikhail Naimy , the poems of Omar Al Khaiam and many others.

" Show me What you read and I will tell you Who you are" and indeed these books shows Osho as the most educated beautifully madman I happily ever know!!

To read 'OSHO', One of my most beloved personalities is always a joy. whenever I read him, its more like a conversation with him rather than the feel of reading the text. 'Books I have loved' is my fifth book of Osho, which is collection of osho's conversation with his disciples regarding the books he loved.

This man osho read around 1,50,000 books(yeah its true around one lakh and fifty thousand) during his lifetime and from that he picked 168 books he loved. I pretty sure I couldn't read 1,00,000 books like him. But atleast I'll try to read those 168 books that osho loved. Those 168 books comes under all the genres across the ages from fiction to philosophy, from vedic age to modern era, from Bhramsutra to Existentialism, from Das Capital to Alice in Wonderland and so... That's the highlighting thing this man. The next book I picked to read is 'The sermon on mount' from the Bible on osho's recommendation, coincidentally that too on Good Friday. :D Have joyful reading my friends...

if anything can be defined that means it is worthless. Unless you come to the indefinable, you have not come to anything worthwhile.
I couldn't know that he was defining or not, even I cannot say that I will find it out someday. Maybe. But it is a possibility again, a vast sky. 168 moons (maybe moon in plural should be "meen", ) giving their silent dim lights, I should say it a blessing of a man who came with the rain midnight, silently and going into your warm blanket without asking, and his body is cool, Suddenly I came to know that i have missed candles so much. The rain comes, another dawn and the dinosaurs in the TV. Call of the Wild. Nightwish tried hard, they were hard rock band and never will the wind turn back, don't worry be worried, it's your last chance, tomorrow the dawn comes, the dinosaurs in the TV. Let's have a cup of water! Cause it's our first and last chance, however...

This is not just a list of suggested goodreads. But much more than that. Each book mentioned in this book is definitely good and a top shelf in its own. If you ask someone who has read a couple of books to tell you his favorite book its easy for him. But if ask someone who has read like 150000+ books and that too some rare and unique ones its definitely tough. That seems to be the case with Osho. In whole discourse its evident he tells a book and then in another session tells few more and so on. I guess if this series of talk was continued he would have told a few more. And those would not be any less than the he already mentioned here.
If you are only interested in the list someone has already created it as below https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
But my suggestion will be to read this book as there is much more in talk than just the list.

This is a must read for everyone who loves reading. Over a series of transcribed interviews that the Osho gave in 1984, about the books he loved and the ones that changed him are featured in this book. I have ordered over 10-12 books that make one regret the fact that one hadn't discovered all this time. Osho, claimed to have read about 150,000 books in his lifetime, cover to cover - and claimed that he is the best read person in the world. The way he speaks about certain authors and the material that they wrote is so beautiful and romantic. The lesser known titles are the ones that seem to be absolute gems and ones that must be devoured instantly. The books he likes range from genres such as philosophy, to human drama and poetry as well. This is a definite read. For a long time, one will not need reccos on what to read next.

A great resource from one of the masters (albeit very far from a perfect human being, as Wild Wild Country illustrates) This book contains a treasure trove of absolutely amazing books that the Bhagwan reccomends to his western audiences. I have read a percentage of the books he has mentioned in here and Im always grateful to come back to this book to find both great commentaries on books and to revisit the parts of Osho I like best.

Osho is a voracious reader, he has almost 150000 books in his library which he said that he has read everything. he has introduced almost 100 books in this book & it is all of not only spiritual it has psychology, literature, poetry etc. He was not in one religion or sect he introduced in varieties like Zen,Sufism, tantra and many more.many books i dint even know or heard of them. this books have gave me lots of insights and new authors and their way of approach. i have marked many books to read which was highly recommend by him repeatedly like Gurdjieff,Kahlil Gibran, j Krishnamurti, PD Ouspensky.

I recommend this book to have interest and understand the peoples who searched for the understanding of the truth being in life.

If you are interested you can watch a video on this books where Osho himself explains about his reading habits and how he started reading from childhood and this video showcases his entire library Link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1h8-...

This book is a list of books. Osho gave a series of talks and I think this was the first series. After this Osho gave many talk series. Order of the books is not important. What is important is that bulk of these books were written across space and time series by seekers or enlightened ones. Many of these books you cannot imagine as being spiritual but they were recommended such as Principia Mathematica, Lust for life, Lectures on Psychoanalysis etc. Osho was born a student and teacher of philosophy before he became enlightened. It is said that he was one of the best debaters and explainers of different philosophies. Anyway, I know people use this book rightly as a pointer to read other books and rightly so. In fact this was one of the "teachings" of Osho to not look at the finger but look at where the finger is pointing to.

It's talk on the books that Osho has loved. He gives the names in every session and gives a poetic book review.
