Absolute banger. I'm researching for a book set in the Smokies and I found a pdf of this little pocket guide book to the area written in 1969. It's- - - beautiful. This guy rams so much great information into these pages with such an amazing tenderness of tone. Whoever this guy is, he has such a great awareness of cadence that he uses to really elevate his deep affection for the National Park. Like, just listen to him riff about birds:
'Whether heard in Maine or in the Great Smokies, querelsome nasal notes of the red-breasted nuthatch, the high-pitched lisping of the golden-crowned kinglet, the clear whistle of the solitary vireo, and the thrilling roundelay of the winter wren become associated with spruce and fir'
Tourists in 1969 just trying to find out where the Clingsman Dome Trail starts: 😳😳😳😳😳
The lad is Waxing Lyrical on friggin salamanders!
Such a calming read. Stunning photography throughout as well. What an object. What an artefact. I feel so honoured to be the first one ever to log this on goodreads. I feel like finding this has really Unlocked my new project and opened up all the directions it could go.
