Waiting for Sunshine

Rate this book
If there’s one thing Shane Thompson and Max Mullins have in common, it’s that they’ve both suffered enough loss to last a lifetime, but the similarities stop there. Being a former Navy seal who’s endured more loss than I care for, I’ve been cautious about who I let into my life. I’ve spent years closed off to the idea of love, and don’t bother letting anyone get close enough to ever have to fear losing them. I’ve got my dog and my best friend; I don’t need anyone else. Or at least that’s what I thought until Shane Thompson rolled into town. With an untimely run-in, every belief I’ve set in place for myself begins to crumble slowly. I find solace in her I’ve never experienced and feel a connection with her I never set out to make.
Being cheated on, leaving my dream job and moving across the country to avoid being homeless really tested my ability to stay optimistic through any situation. But that’s what I do, look for the bright side. Running into Max Mullins was another test that I did not study for. He may have started as the grump who ruined my favorite sweatshirt, but he’s quickly becoming so much more. I am finding myself trusting him and falling for him more every time I am around him. But when someone from my life in San Francisco shows up threatening what we’ve become, Max makes a decision he’ll soon regret.

Now the only question is, can he rectify his hasty decision and mend what’s been broken?

Cute short read!

Great story line
Fantastic characters

Only knock I have is that some of the thoughts/writing felt repetitive. The characters internal monologue would be immediately repeated in conversation in the book which took away from the experience.

Otherwise, very enjoyable, cutesy romance read.

First, I just wanted to say how thankful I am that I am on this ARC team. I have followed Sarah on TikTok and Instagram for a while and applied for this as soon as I could! I just knew I’d love this book and boy did it exceed my expectations 🤍

If you like age gap, grumpy/sunshine, a former Navy SEAL, a nice + spicy slow burn, work place romance, and dual POV, this is for you! 😍 I enjoyed this 110% - I couldn’t put it down!

Sarah’s writing is incredible. The detail that’s given in the chapters is perfection - nothing feels drawn out or insignificant. Every single detail is there for a reason and I ate that up 👏🏻 Max and Shane’s story had me swooning from the moment she was covered in coffee. Max is a grumpy, protective bar owner and Shane is a radiant ray of sunshine — just ask Max. 😉 this book was so dang good and the spice was *chefs kiss* 🤌🏼🥵 I’ll definitely be thinking about it for the rest of forever.

The side characters were some of my favorites I’ve read about. They have you wishing they’re your real life friends and not just your fictional besties!

Do yourself a favor and read it when it releases on April 20! You won’t be disappointed at all. 🤍

This book was so good!! I’m in love with Max and Shane aka Grumpy and Sunshine. And she’s truly a Sunshine with her positivity radiating everywhere she goes. Such a fun read that brings up so many emotions! I laughed, I cried, I just couldn’t get enough of these 2.

They meet because of a spilled coffee, and before they know it, she’s working for him. From there, everything unravels with some ups and downs. Also, someone comes back from her past - but why, and will it be important? It’s yours to find out and let yourself immerse into this beautiful love story.

I love how Sarah introduces the characters, and how the chapters are laid out. Everything flows so good. Every detail is there for a reason and I lived for it.

Dual POV
Grumpy Sunshine
Slow burn (and so good!)
Work place romance

10/10 recommend!

I had the privilege of being part of Sarah Pirtle’s ARC team. Congrats on your first book Sarah, it’s amazing!

I’ll start with the technicalities and then move to the storyline. I understand that this novel is a debut, so there will be some things that aren’t written as well as novels by long-time authors. However, I do think that whether you are a beginner or an expert, if you are writing a book then your grammar should at least be up to snuff. Obviously grammar isn’t all that a book is about, but grammar helps to properly portray stories/conversations, etc. and when grammar is poor, it can be distracting from the storyline. I found that the general structure of the sentences was not great. For instance, the author used of a lot of commas rather than periods; she accidentally switched between past/present tense when the story is set in the present; and she would repeat the same lines / explanations throughout the story. An example of this last point is when Shane and Max get back together at the end of the story, and then the Epilogue begins with a recap of everything that had happened only a few pages earlier. In real-life conversations, yes, recaps are necessary and fine; in a book, we can assume that the reader knows all of this and does not need a full rundown of events that happened a few pages prior. For some people, like myself, if a piece of writing does not grammatically flow, it becomes tough to appreciate the storyline. This is what I found in this novel; every time a sentence was structured poorly, I’d be distracted by how immature the writing sounded.

The storyline itself was pretty good, however a lot of the scenes just kind of seemed unrealistic to me. One of my least favourite things to occur in a romance story is when the characters fall head over heels for each other without knowing each other at all — as if they’re only falling in love because the story calls for it, not because they actually are in love. Max, who’s this wounded, grumpy, walls-up kind of guy, meets this girl, and within like, a day of knowing her, starts to say how this girl is different from all the others and how she’s it for him. I don’t know, just seemed kind of rushed; let them get to know each other first before making huge proclamations. Also, maybe just a me thing, but I didn’t love how much Max winked. I have never genuinely winked at someone once in my life, and Max winks about 2x per conversation — kind of overkill. Furthermore, I get the whole Sunshine nickname thing, but I didn’t love how that was literally the only thing Max called her — I feel that in real life, it’s more of a mix between name and nickname. Finally, I wish this story included more in it than just Shane/Max interactions. It felt like every scene was just them being hot for each other, and it didn’t really depict much of their lives outside of these interactions (yes, a few minor scenes, but even those felt underdeveloped/cut short).

Overall, the storyline was cute, I just think the writing was a little bit immature. It felt like reading the short stories I used to write in 9th grade, and I think this could have been helped with some reviews/editing prior to publish.

I love, love, LOVE this book! It was so cute and a little spicy of course. Their relationship was just so perfect. I would’ve loved to hear more about Riley, but other than that this book has become my new obsession. It was so well written and I felt like my heart was falling in love and breaking just as theirs did. If you haven’t read it yet your are truly missing out! Get it now!

*ARC REVIEW*
Thanks to Sarah Pirtle for allowing me to read an ARC of this book!
Dear Sarah Pirtle, ma'am, I have a bone to pick with you.

HOW DARE YOU write such a phenomenal debut book only to make those who are blessed enough to be on your ARC team have to wait with bated breath for it to be released so we can make it all our friends' problem? I'm sure my friends thank you but still...

Sarah's writing is easygoing, the slow burn was burning real slow, and the tension between these two characters sparked right off of the page (er, the kindle...you know what I mean). We meet Shane on a bad day. Like, a really bad day. We meet Max, the forever grumpy bar owner who meets Shane with the fervor and heat that only a spilled coffee on a white sweatshirt can provide. While their first meeting may have been a bit clumsy, they fall into a smooth(er...ish) rhythm when Shane starts working at Max's bar. I can't wax poetic too much more or else I'll spill spoilers, but this is a great debut and I can't wait to see where she takes her writing (I DMed her Instagram FAR too many times while reading this with real time reactions and theories) and if she's taking suggestions for book boyfriends, I've got myself a list I can send her!

Waiting for Sunshine is LIVE NOW for paperback and Kindle goes live on April 20th!

I really tried to like this one. What the author's Instagram reel teased us about wasn't what was delivered, unfortunately. I get that this was her debut and I hope my review helps as I'm going to be as objective as possible.

1. Insta-love
Max knew Shane all for one day (not even an entire day, technically) and he had a "there's something about her" feeling. The number of interactions they've had? Two short ones. It wasn't realistic. I can understand mild attraction on the first interaction. Mild attraction building up to something? Amazing. There was no tension. It kind of felt like both were stating facts, that they were attracted to each other, and they were just biding their time until they finally got together. I just didn't feel like they had chemistry. The spicy scenes weren't exciting. Everything happened too quickly.

2. Writing style
I love a dual POV book. I just didn't get the point of recapping the same story line in each MC's POV. It just felt like watching a TV show and they show the recap the following week before the new episode starts.

3. Grammar
I'm not trying to be a grammar-nazi but the random period and commas (or the lack of) were very distracting. Having to read the same sentence again to get the flow back isn't fun when you're trying to read a book.

4. Too many background characters
I know this is going to be a part of a series and introducing all or some of the characters is important for the story and it's fun to see it happen. However, I felt that there was too much time spent on the comings and goings of side characters' lives. Too many scenes spent around them ultimately gave Shane and Max even less time together in their own story.

5. Would fail the Bechdel test
This is a romance book and I totally understand it comes with the premise. I love a good girl talk. I just felt like every time they got together, they'd only talk about men. They have to have something else going on in their lives that isn't about men- hobbies, passions, anything.

6. Miscommunication
A 36 year old man failed to use his words and didn't respond to Shane reaching out. And this happened at the end of the book. This was far too late in terms of "third act break-up". They got back together and then, boom! Epilogue. In my opinion, it'd have been a lot better to have a fun filler chapter before the epilogue. I just found myself losing more interest when this happened. It was immature and stupid on Max's part.

I feel the author could have used a good set of alpha and beta readers and an editor. This could have been a fun age gap, workplace romance with tension and spice.

“Home for me is you”

5⭐️ Some spice🔥

Waiting for Sunshine is Sarah Pirtle’s debut novel and I’m so thrilled I got to be one of the first ones to read it. If you’re looking for a Dual POV, slow burn, age gap, grumpy/sunshine, workplace romance with a pet dog, you’ll definitely want to read this one! Max is a Navy SEAL Veteran and Shane is an artist. I was laughing through the majority of the book, the banter between Max and Shane with the inner dialogue was just perfect. Max and Shane are super likable and relatable in some aspects. But man, when the emotions were not all happy and sunshine, you totally felt everything. As a military spouse, some of the parts hit hard and close to home 🥹 and I truly appreciate some of the light that was shed on that. This book kept me turning the pages until I was done and I cannot wait to read more of the other characters.

I am usually strictly a fantasy reader, but I knew I had to give Contemporary Romance a go for this book! I’m glad I did! It’s safe to say that I was surprised by it! I finished it in less than 24 hours!

Waiting for Sunshine has the spice🌶️, I enjoyed the dynamic between the main romantic couple and all the characters were very easy to connect with. Sarah did a great job also adding extra touches within the book that would help enhance the reader’s experience as well, which I appreciate! Overall, I would definitely suggest this book to others, especially those who enjoy contemporary romance!

This book is easily a 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me!

Thank you for having me on the ARC Reader team as well, Sarah!

I'm so happy to have the privilege of being on Sarah's ARC team and to read such a fantastic debut!

Waiting for Sunshine is a slooooow burn, which I usually don't like, but wow, this is so worth that torment! 😂 There's also a good amount of spice in here too, which is a huge plus in my book!
I love Shane and Max! Their banter was amazing, and their chemistry was off the charts!

Please get this book and give it a go, you won't be disappointed!

Okay ma’am coming in hot with a debut novel! 😍😍😍

Max and Shane were pure sunshine - literally!

Shane is strong and loving. I loved how her character wasn’t afraid to let her feelings be known and go for what she wanted. Of course she still has vulnerable moments, but overall, she is a strong FMC.

Max is our grumpy “damaged” MMC who obviously hasn’t found his person yet - not that he has ever tried. When Shane starts bringing out the brightness in his life we see him try to overcome his worries and hesitations. He still makes mistakes but in the end he develops into the man we all know he is capable of being.

The story, the spice, the development - it was all great and I cannot wait to see what’s next. 💜

I was able to read this book early due to receiving an ARC so I would like to thank the author and BookFunnel for my digital copy.

I loved meeting Max, a veteran who is carrying the weight of his years of service and never wants to open his heart, and Shane, an artist who has experienced her fair share of heartbreak but is ready to start all over again when she moves back home to Nashville.

I absolutely fell in love with the main characters of this story, but their friends, both hers and his, stole my heart as well. The way their friends always look out for Shane’s and Max’s interests and hearts is on another level. Everyone should hope for a friendship like that.

This book has some of my most favorite tropes, including Slow Burn, Age Gap (25/36), Dual POV, Found Family, a bit of Forced Proximity, and a dash of Miscommunication (which is good because that is my LEAST favorite trope!).

If you’re looking for a book with a fantastic story and 🌶🌶🌶🌶 spice, make sure to check out Waiting for Sunshine when it releases on April 20th!

I got to read this book as an ARC read! 🤩

This book has so much heart! From the plot, to the issues discussed, to the characters and their relationships! You love each character instantly!

Every interaction between the characters is meaningful in it’s own way! The girl group is what every girl wishes for and they boost each other up every chance they get! I loved that this book didn’t involve characters talking negatively about others and putting others down!

So many swoon worthy moments between Max and Shane! 😍 Not only that but the spice! 🥵

I can’t wait for the other books in the Nashville Nights series! 😉

It took me a minute to get into this book, I found some parts in the beginning repetitive but once I found my groove I couldn’t put it down. I really enjoyed all the characters and their relationships with each other. Overall I thought it was a sweet story with a decent amount of spicy, just how I like them.

Thank you so much for the ARC of this book and Congratulations for getting another book published.

I review a book on the basis of 5 parameters:
Cover , beginning, characters , story plot , emotions .

Cover : I loved the cover. After reading the book , I came to know that the cover has tiny references regarding max and shane , I found that adorable too.

Beginning: The beginning was indeed organised. This is exactly how I would want to read the beginning especially when it is starting with someone's pov so that I can form some background. Sarah did an amazing job with the beginning which gripped me to the very end as well.

Characters: I absolutely loved Shane and Max. Both the characters had their equal share of issues and past problems with them . They both were realistic too. But I couldn't relate to shane as much as I did with Max , maybe because I felt Shane was projected ( my interpretation) as a perfect girl . She was "always " calm , sweet which is unrealistic for me . Max was someone I highly related to . He had his own set of imperfections evidently visible in his choices , actions and behaviours which gave me a conclusion that his character is designed really carefully and the author has stepped into Max's foot to write from his side .

Story plot : For me , the story plot was neutral. It wasn't too good for me neither too bad . The end really made my heart warm though. What I loved about the story was the organisation of events which helped me alot to understand the characters of the story , not only max, shane but other side characters as well. What I didn't like about the story was the pace. I am not a huge fan of love at first sight, I like tension and development, their attraction was instant which was mentioned in their povs too. So that is not for me .

Emotions : The best part about this book was emotional involvement of both Max and Shane. I loved the part where an emotional message is given by the author on Loss and their two sides of coping with it . I loved the part where Max expressed his side with his sweet and heart wrenching words and the end too , those grand gestures were cherry on cake.

Overall , I would recommend you to read this book if you like -
grumpy x sunshine,
small town romance ,
Insta love romance ,
boss x employee romance
spicy books

Y’all this is Sarah’s first book. Yes, you read that correct, FIRST. And it was so stinking good. I was hooked from beginning to end.

Small town romance. Ex-marine. Grumpy sunshine. Grief and loss. Iced coffee and toaster strudels.

When Shane moves home to Nashville after her breaking up with her cheating ex to start over with no job and living in her besties spare room. While looking for employment she quite literally runs into a man she describes as being “built like what I imagine a Viking god would be sculpted after.” Later that day, Shane and her besties stroll into Chattahoochies where she finds herself the newest bartender. This bar is owned by none other than (you guessed it) the grumpy Viking, ex-Navy seal, Max who also just so happens to be her new boss.

Max is everything a book boyfriend should be, sweet, protective, but also naughty lol. Shane I swear was just radiating happiness MOST of the book. The two of them together were just absolute perfection. The way they helped each other process their grief and supported each other when it got tough and brought out sides of each other that were hidden beneath that grief was just so touching and lovely.

My thoughts:
•Max is the literal definition of “if he wants to he will”
•We love a supportive group of besties, I’m lucky to have one just like Shane, Taylor, Lauren, and Leah 🖤
•Every bar needs a dog like Riley

“I’m not scared to love you, Max. I’m scared you’ll never give me the chance to.”

This book, y’all. THIS. FREAKIN. BOOK. I’m so beyond in love with it. It made me laugh, made me cry, and made me swoon. Max and Shane made me fall in love with them immediately. Their chemistry felt so genuine and the author provided the best descriptions of the characters themselves and their inner thoughts. Shane’s positive attitude made me smile constantly and the way she softened Max’s heart was magical. I will never get over the fact that this was Sarah Pirtle’s first book. She’s going to be HUGE y’all. Mark my words.

P.S. Max is now my book boyfriend. So everyone else needs to back off. K, thanks.

I just want to start off by saying I’m incredibly grateful to be apart of the ARC team, it’s an honor.
This book was everything a slow burn romance should be. I could not put it down. Absolutely beautifully written. The bond between Shane and Max builds throughout the book and it’s truly something heart warming. It gets your attention right from the start and keeps it the entire time. From the main character, side characters and all the little details in between everything flowed really nicely and was just perfection. Oh let’s not forget the spice because DANG. Things were definitely spicy between the two. I don’t know what magic Sarah put into this book but I can’t get enough of it. If you are a fan of grumpy X sunshine, dual POV, age gap, and slow burn romance then this is for you. I can’t recommend it enough and I can’t wait to see what she does next! (Hopefully it’s Tuckers book🤞)

I love this authors Book Boyfriend Tik toks that she makes with her husband, and since seeing those I’ve been excited for her debut. Unfortunately, this missed the mark for me. Ultimately, i didn’t feel chemistry between Shane and Max, and their relationship developed too quickly with not enough foundation, I feel. There were also a lot of conversations between the characters that felt more like an excuse to info dump (there’s one convo where they’re all at Top Golf and they all have to share fact about themselves that didn’t feel authentic at all, and felt more like a way for Max and his friend to get to know Shane and her friends).

If SP ever decides to write outside of this series, I may give her works another shot, but unfortunately, this one wasn’t for me.

I first found out about this author by watching her Instagram videos promoting this book/acting out parts of the book with her hubby for “editing purposes.” Those videos were cute and the promotions were enticing, but the book itself was rife with grammatical/typological errors that I couldn’t overlook. Still fun to read though, and to “act out” with my own fella (namely, trying to growl as much as Max, 100000000x)

This was a cute romance debut featuring the grumpy/sunshine trope very obviously. Kudos for the PTSD/veteran awareness. The dual narration kind of overlaps, which pulled me out of the story since it felt repetitive, and *holy cow* is it spicy, maybe too much for me. But-it is a solid love story with a happy ending, so I wasn’t disappointed.

First, I'd like to thank the author for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

It was a really cute romance.
Shane has a radiant personnality, the kind I totally love because it's so confortable to be around such people (yes, even when fictionnal ^^).
And Max was protectiv and so kind. Totally dreamy!! I loved the way he helped Shane with her art, how he was there for her.
And their group of friends...they were so fun. I can wait to know/see more of them in the future books in the series.

What was missing ? More development about the characters and their story.
I felt like some moments were a bit rushed to go to the next one.
I wish we could have had more about Max's past, than their relation could have taken more time to built. This way, I think emotions would have been stronger.
Don't get me wrong, there were very cute scenes and some hotter 🔥It was very pleasant ro read.
But I needed more emotions, a stronger connection with the characters.

The dual point of view was great. I love having the male point of view in a romance. I always enjoy reading the MMC's thoughts. It's always the moment when you see the real him ^^
Here, it was well done...except when some scene were repeated in the other point of view. It felt a bit repetitiv.
Other than that, it was well written!

For a first book, it was really good. I enjoyed reading it and I'd be happy to read more about this group, especially the 2 best friends. They seem to have a nice chemistry.

If you're looking for a cute romance, you're at the right place. Shane and Max will make you swoon!!

I found Sarah through TT and her editor. Waiting for Sunshine is her debut book and what an exciting way to enter the book world!

Understandably the writing was a little novice. You can tell she is has so many ideas and trying to get them all out to her readers. I am excited to see what Sarah does with the rest of the characters in the world she is creating.

Special thanks for sharing this advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.

“I felt like I was seeing the sun shine after being in the middle of a storm I thought would never end. I didn’t know it until I saw you that day, how desperately I was waiting for sunshine. How desperately I was waiting for you.”

MAX MULLINS CAN RUIN ME ANY DAY OF THE WEEK.

This man is grumpy, he’s her boss, he’s ex military, he’s got a cute dog, and he is completely obsessed with Shane. Tucker is his best friend and their friendship is AMAZING.

She is sunshine personified, she’s his new bartender, she’s an artist who just moved back home after finding out her boyfriend is cheating on her. She’s also got the most fun red haired best friend named Taylor who I cannot wait to hear more about.

These two bond over coffee in the best way. She may or may not refer to him as Viking Hulk and I laughed so hard I cried. Seeing the group of friend slowly form into one big group of the most fun and loving group was so wholesome.

The friendships in this book make it feel so real. All of it felt real, from the characters to the bar. Hey siri play Alan Jackson’s Chattahoochee. If you know, you know.

This book was filled with nights at the bar, cups of coffee, gym dates, girls nights, charcuterie boards, and some really deep talk of loss and love.

It had everything and I miss the crew so much already.

ARC BOOK REVIEW: Waiting for Sunshine by @authorsarahpirtle

4.5 ⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️

This was Sarah’s debut novel and she did a fabulous job!! It releases on April 20th so get your orders in!

Tropes:
•Grumpy/sunshine
•Dual POV
•Military vets
•Small age gap (25/36)
•Not so meet cute
•Work place romance
•Slow burn 🫠
•Spicy 🌶️
•Friends on both sides were amazing characters (hoping there’s a book 2 coming!! 😉)

“I felt like I was seeing the sun shine after being in the middle of a storm I thought would never end. I didn’t know it until I saw you that day, how desperately I was waiting for sunshine. How desperately I was waiting for you.” 🫠🥹

Shane moved back to Nashville after a bad breakup, her and Max met when they were both having bad days, then Shane ends up getting a job in his bar. The chemistry was 🔥 between these two and I don’t want to give any spoilers but there was a non-romance book type of event that occurred semi-early in the book that really hooked me into the story!

A little bit of miscommunication and a small 3rd act breakup but thankfully not too bad because that can really get to me lol.

I am SO impressed this was Sarah’s first novel! TBR this, preorder it, whatever your style but definitely recommend!

Thank you Sarah for choosing me to read an early copy of this and I can’t wait to see what you have for us next!

Motherfreaker, this book was so good! 😮‍💨 I love, love, LOVE Max & Shane. A literal grumpy x sunshine (iykyk).

Former Navy Seal Max absolutely stole my heart. He’s the protective book boyfriend we all need. And I swear Shane constantly has a ring of golden rays radiating from her. Those two were HOT. And can we talk about this amazing friend group? I’m going to need individual stories on each of them. But let’s start with Taylor & Tucker, please. 🥹

Congratulations to Sarah Pirtle on her debut novel!! And thank you so, so much for trusting me with an ARC of your book baby. This one is going far, girl!

“Being a bar owner myself I don’t really have the desire to go out to someone else’s bar when I’m off.”

I don’t think the author did a lot of research for this book. Every bar owner, manager, worker, etc I know spends 90% of their free time at other peoples bars. But maybe I’m just an alcoholic. And they all are as well.
