I’m supposed to be meeting with Emory’s dragon court and amazing them with my suave wit and shining intellect but instead I’m on the trail of a kidnapper. Someone has abducted a teenage centaur, Alfie, from a magical circus. The circus master has hired me and Gato to find out who took him – hopefully before Alfie swims with the fishes.
The problem is that no one in the circus is who they say they are. The Other Circus is a front for a magical underground that helps those who want to leave their magical lives far behind. The circus performers have spent years keeping their heads down and their mouths shut, and it’s going to take more than asking nicely to get this bunch to crack.
The clock is ticking, not only for Alfie, but also for me to impress Emory’s dragon court. When I finally meet them, I’m going to have to pass through a series of challenges before they’ll recognise me as Emory’s intended mate. Oh, and they won’t tell me what’s a challenge, and what’s not.
Nothing is what it seems, but luckily I come with an in-built lie detector. I’m itching to prove that I’m more than a pretty face to the standoffish dragon-shifters, but finding Alfie has to come first.
I’m juggling things as best I can, but all it will take is one wrong move to bring the world crashing down on my head…
Burn through this fun, fast-paced, laugh-out-loud mix of urban fantasy and mystery.
Fans of Kim Richardson, Annette Marie and Helen Harper will binge through this addictive new series.
Written in British English. For the maximal reader experience, it is recommended that you read The Other Wolf series before you read Challenge of the Court, though the events in the Other Wolf series are explained if you prefer to dive right in.
What a way to start my New Year off, another fabulous read from Ms Harris in the Other Realm series.
I love the way the reading order switched from Jinx to Lucy and then back again. As the adventures progress, the characters grow and develop and I love that I feel as though I know them all individually now!
This one actually pissed me off A LOT, which is why it earned placement on my "book full of stupid assholes" shelf.
Jinx and Emory seem to have had a personality transplant. Emory was mostly absent, but when he was present he sat around with his thumb up his ass while his court/council did HORRIBLE, ILLEGAL THINGS. Yeah yeah, fucking challenges. That doesn't give them the right to kidnap people from other species.
The fact that Jinx doesn't get pissed about it - oh no, she moans martyr-style about how the fucking asshole dragons kidnapping and endangering people is allllllll herrrrrr fauuuuulllllt, but she doesn't beat the absolute shit out of them - pissed me off.
She even made a direct connection between Hes being kidnapped by Mrs. H (book 1) and now Hes being kidnapped by the fucking dragons. She was all "poor Hes always being kidnapped and put in danger" but didn't take that to it's conclusion. Bitch, you KILLED Mrs. H - who was a friend - for what she did. And she wasn't trying to actually kill Hes. These fucking dragons, though, expected you all to die in that tower, with the phoenix gleefully murdering you all. KILL THEM. Grow a fucking spine and kill them! Or at the very fucking least, go back there, spit in their fucking faces, tell them they are evil fucking scum and you're now Team Connection and will do your best to get creatures caged, since they've demonstrated that they are fucking monstrous. Fuck them and their challenges. Fuck Emory for allowing this shit. I don't give a single flying fuck about their traditions and their bullshit. They all deserve to be chopped into little bits and scattered in the ocean. They certainly don't deserve Jinx. She should flip them two flying middle fingers and peace the fuck out.
But she doesn't, because the awesome Jinx with the strong moral core is completely absent here. She whines a bit about it, but doesn't DO anything. She doesn't even really say anything. She just meekly goes along with all the bullshit. Why? Is that who you want to be? Fucking gross.
Separately, it seems like the Lucy spin-off is supposed to come before this second part of the series (I guess the first 4 books were one part, then the Lucy books, and then the back 3 books with Jinx). So who knows, maybe she really did get a personality transplant between books 4 and 5. We'll see. I'm pausing here and flipping over to Lucy.

3.5/5.0 Completely addicting UF! This one slipped a bit in my opinion due to a very personal dislike of spending a ton of page space in time travel, when the book isn’t a time travel. It seems too much like a cheat to just jump back and fix things rather than work them out in real time. The author has used this device a few times in previous books and I have never liked it, but there was usually a relatively quick resolution so I just dealt. In this installment, however, it was part of a major plot thread and I just couldn’t ignore my annoyance.
With that said, the rest was just as action-filled and enjoyable as any so far!
Another fun adventure. Jinx has to prove herself to the dragon court, to become Emory's bride. A lot of apparently disparate parts of the story come together in an action packed ending. As usual the characters are fun when they aren't evil... well even the evil characters are fun. It's silly over the top but page turning and entertaining.
Jinx once again takes on the world with her signature no-nonsense attitude, proving why she is one of my favorite characters to follow on her adventures. I was so glad to be reunited with this kick-ass heroine (and honestly, the relief is immeasurable). If you're a fan of the previous books in the series, you'll definitely want to pick this one up. Jinx has grown even more bad-ass, and Gato continues to be the adorable furry sidekick we all love. His antics never fail to bring a smile to my face. I can't wait to see what the future holds for Jinx, her dragon court, and her amazing friends! ❤️
My favorite quote from the book:
"Where's the pooch?" Shirdal asked, looking around.
"With the circus."
"He's finally given in to his longing to be a clown, has he?" Shirdal snickered.
If you're a fan of The Other Realm series, then you won't be disappointed with "Heather G. Harris' Challenge of the Court." As the fifth installment in the series, it follows our favorite truth seeker P.I., Jinx, on her latest adventure investigating the disappearance of a young centaur from a magical circus.
Jinx faces her greatest challenge yet as she must prove her worthiness to rule by Emory's side, and win over his disgruntled dragons. The Court throws different challenges her way to test her abilities, but Jinx proves herself and shows them just who she is.
The character development in this book is impressive, especially with Jinx's growth throughout the series. The supporting characters are equally well-developed, adding depth and richness to the story.
Jinx is a compelling character who continues to grow throughout the series, and her development is particularly evident in this book. The supporting characters are equally well-developed, adding depth and richness to the story.
The humor is woven perfectly throughout the book, but there is also a lot of depth to the character and plot. The story is a fast-paced page-turner, and readers will be surprised at every turn. 'Challenge of the Court' is a riveting book that is both satisfying and fun to read. Read more at: https://www.summonfantasy.com/reviews...
*I am a new arc reader for Heather but have been reading her books since the first Other Realm*
I *adored* this book! It was so nice being back with Jinx and her shenanigans and her joy (of things like jumping out of helicopters) is infectious. The writing is excellent, the suspense was there while still maintaining the humour that Heather is known for.
However, as an arc reader, perhaps the thing that is most important to me is how an author receives feedback. I noted something that was totally accidentally a bit problematic but not only had she had already handled it when someone else mentioned it before I had (which I hadn't seen in the comments), she thanked me for letting her know. There was no defensiveness or guilting it was just something along the lines of "Thank you for telling me! I didn't know and I've changed it." No one can notice everything and that's why arc readers exist! But for an author to be genuinely so open to feedback is something that is notable and, while it should be more common, deserves high praise.
But I did just join the arc team to get the books faster as I have been PININGGGGGGG.
It was SO GOOD getting to hang out with Jinx, Gato, Emory, Shirdal and co again for the beginning of another series - and I'm delighted to find that Book 2 is already out, so it's gone straight onto my KU TBR.
This instalment has Jinx facing a set of challenges to prove to the dragon court that she's worthy of becoming their Prima, all while trying to solve the case of an abducted teenager.
It was every bit as good as the original four Glimmer books - Ms Harris has become one of my autobuy (or at least autoread - and I may yet end up buying the rest of the series, even though it's available on KU now) authors because the stories are just that compelling to me.
Looking forward immensely to seeing where the rest of the series takes Jinx.
Many thanks to the author for an ARC. All opinions are my own.
It was great to be back with Jinx again in the highly original UF world Harris has created for her truth detecting PI. Of course Jinx has a lot on her plate these days. When you're bonding to a dragon shifter, the rest of his court won't just take you at face value. There are tests. With fire among other things.
What I really appreciate about this series is how Jinx does subtly grow and change as a person. By this fifth book, she's got pretty good at calling herself on her own BS. Ergo the disproportionate shutting down reaction she might have had before when it seems she's being deceived, is now tempered by her better judgement. She waits for the facts and considers the other person's perspective. I'm also a big fan of the way the romantic subplot develops in the series too. All too often in urban fantasy, once a romance culminates in the couple getting together, one of three things happen: they become an amalgam who can barely function without each other and the characters lose all differentiation and interest; the romance has to be broken up - often by someone cheating or dying - and a new love interest rolled in: or the female MC immediately gets pregnant and that becomes the drama. I really enjoy the way that Harris does not magically solve all relationship issues or characters' insecurities, but instead allows Jinx to feel insecure or annoyed or as if she might not be up to the task of being queen of the dragons (she's basically marrying Emory's job as well as him). We're allowed to appreciate that these are big steps and she had wobbly moments. I've always felt that if you get to the HEA of a couple and you find that it's boring (hence the desire to break them up etc), then maybe you're not writing an interesting relationship. It's nice to see another author who also appears to understand that plenty of things about a romance can be interesting, funny, even dramatic after the couple pair up.
The rest of the story was quirky and fun with a few serious notes, which is completely in-keeping with the other books. I recommend starting with Glimmer of the Other and working your way through (including The Other Wolf series) for the best reading experience. Also shout out to Amber deLea who is the most put upon witch in England and absolutely deserves her own book.
Once again I'm back with Jinx in a thrilling ride along to the Other Realm and WHAT a ride it was. Heather works her magic deftly drawing me into another adventure with characters that have completely stolen my heart. I can't help but get excited for each book I read in this series as I know that I won't just read the story, the author makes me live and breathe it, and believe me this one was no exception. And although my emotions didn't take too much of a battering in this one (that's not to say I didn't have a couple of heartstopping moments), I have a feeling it's the calm before the storm before Heather wrecks me all over again.
When Jinx is hired by a circus to find a missing teenager, she soon discovers that nothing is quite as it seems. In fact The Other Circus is a front for the magical, those who want or need to hide from their previous lives in relative safety. But finding Alfie isn't the only thing Jinx has to worry about as she prepares herself to meet Emory's court. A court that has set up a series of challenges to determine if she is worthy to be Emory's mate. With the clock ticking, Jinx needs to find out who is behind the kidnapping, while trying to win over a unfriendly court of dragons, and prove once and for all she has what it takes to be by Emory's side.
Jinx has come a long way since I was first introduced to her in book one. From someone who didn't know magic existed and having trouble trusting people, she has now become a force to be reckoned with and having a circle of friends she'll trust with her life, and being a part of her journey is something I've loved every minute of. Not only that but she has managed to find love along the way with Emory, who is not only a dragon but loves her for exactly who she is. So it was immensely satisfying to me to sit back and watch her take on a stuffy and antiquated dragon court and show them that she was no pushover. Yeah this girl has snark and sass for days which is why I absolutely adore everything about her.
Emory is just the epitome of charm and grace, even being a dragon he knows exactly what it is like to come from nothing and have to work hard for acceptance as he carrys the title of Elite. So watching the woman he loves being faced with deadly challenges and not being able to intervene, literally tore him up inside. Not because he doesn't believe in Jinx but because it forces him to go against his very nature to protect her, as he knows just how tricky his court can be. Yet it was this faith in her, that she could do this, not his protection that made me love him even more.
I can't help but adore Shirdal, the charming, cheeky and funny griffin who's secret weapon is to fly under the radar so everyone underestimates him. His quips, even in the most inappropriate of times had me laughing so hard I honestly thought I'd pull a muscle. And although I don't love him quite as much as Bastion, this tricky griffin is certainly a close second as he has managed to worm his way into my heart and charm me with his sparkling personality.
With only two more books to go in Jinx's story, I'm wondering what surprises the author has in store for me next but whatever it is, I'm sure it will be something I'm not expecting. I love everything about this series and I can't wait for my next adventure. Highly recommend 😁
This is such a fun series to read. Jinx is meeting with the dragon council to see if they’ll accept her as Emory’s mate, she has a possible kidnapping at a magical circus, a mysterious break-in at her office and a challenge to win. There are a lot of interesting happenings in this book. Jinx has a bunch of allies so there is witch magic, elemental magic, a griffin, her hellhound, a vampire and a merman. A lot happens but it is all perfectly put together for a most enjoyable, fast read. On a side note, Jinx and Emory reminded me of the In Death series by JD Robb – cop/pi married/engaged to billionaire with everyone getting involved in each others business.
I had the honour of reading an ARC of the above book, and once again Heather does not disappoint! Jinx is still getting herself into trouble while carrying out her day to day P.I business, but has a greater challenge heading her way! She has to prove that she is strong enough to rule by Emory's side. And the other dragon's are a little, ok a lot upset at his choice! All Jinx and Emory want to do is be together, but throw in a kidnapping, interfering from the council and a few other unexpected surprises and Jinx is having a few bad days!
Yay for more Jinx! I'm so glad Harris returned to Jinx and Emory's story so we could have some answers to open ended questions.
I'm not the biggest fan of challenge/competition plots. It was fun to read about Jess going through them and all, but none of the twists and turns had any impact on me since I could see them all a mile away. I did enjoy the little crumbs here and there that will certainly carry over the overreaching series arc, though! And the banter between all characters was still amazing.
Great continuation of Jess’s story with a fast moving plot and good twists and turns! I enjoyed the circus sub-plot, and it also had interesting side characters. I also love how Jess solved the mystery in the end and the impression she left on the Court. Looking forward to the next one!
This was such a let down from the previous part of the series, def won’t be continuing Jinx/Emory’s story because they don’t even seem like the same characters from before? I’m hoping the second half of Lucy’s story and Amber’s series is much better
I love this series. I love the confidence Jinx has. She has collected a wonderful, slightly insane bunch of friends and has a found family. The books are well written with sass, snark and love mixed throughout.
I was so excited to get back to this world, to my favourite PI and her amazeballs hell hound Gato and their unique crime solving. Right from the opening chapter, this book really grabbed me, although, Heather's books always do. She's a force of nature with her ingenious writing style, stirring up a massive tornado, gaining momentum and power and depositing me gently once it dissipates. With the magnificent array of characters, the incredible pacing, terrific plot and superb world building, it's an almost impossible task to put any of her books down. I get caught up, entangled, each and every time. This book reiterated how much I love Jess and her snark! As I was reading this book, all my love for this fabulous character, Jess, came crashing down on me, totally overwhelming me in how full my heart was, alternating between feeling like a proud mama at her growth throughout the series and wanting to be her bestie! Absolutely adore her! As I do the beautiful love she and Emory share, he's the dream boyfriend, gorgeous, tough, tender, understanding, loving and he's the head honcho of the supernatural world, and it definitely isn't a hindrance that he's super rich.
Talk about great characters! Every imaginable shifter, Dragons, Gargoyles, Griffins, Centaurs, Wolves, Ogres, and more. So diverse and firmly team Jess, if I ever needed anyone to help me survive a potentially deadly challenge, I'd call on Shirdal, Amber, Jack and Nate too! Which reminds me, yes, Jess has to "prove worthy" of being Emory's Prima in the Dragon Court through an antiquated trial where the stakes are high, really high. Life or death high...all manufactured by a very devious Elizabeth, who I honestly wanted to bop on the nose.
There were a few scenes, one where the seer has a predicament or two, had my heart nearly stopping! No, it's true, all sorts of scenarios were chasing around my head. With one safely resolved, the other will have me gnawing at my fingertips until it comes to pass and the other with a Phoenix, so tense but a visual delight.
I have to pay homage to Amber, I absolutely adore her! She's really a special character. She's a witch I really would love to befriend, not only because she's so cool but also because she NEEDS a friend. She has this aura of stoicism and business like approach, so friends are not a commodity she has. She doesn't let people in, being abrasive and snarky at every turn but I love the soft spot she has for Jess, although she'd deny that emphatically!
So to wrap it up, a real rollercoaster ride, thrilling, exciting, intoxicating, rousing, sometimes hair raising but always fun. Oh and I got to visit a very unusual circus circus too! Am I looking forward to the next book? That would be the understatement of the century!
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring a lot. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
I used to rate this series at 4 star, but now it's a 1 star.
First time read the author's work?: No
Will you be reading more?: No
Would you recommend?: No
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
If you haven't read the other books in this series, STOP go back and read them, they introduce many of the players you'll see in the Court books.
At the end of the last book there were some that didn't make it, Mrs. H, the mastermind, Inspector Zack Stone both died. The once kidnapped Hester is now a vampyr who doesn't need blood, her boyfriend Nate has a bond with Jinx and when he was called to help, Hes deleted the message, so he never showed. Nate feels betrayed and that he has forsworn his vow to always come to Jinx's aid. So that relationship is now on the rocks.
As this book opens, Jinx is investigating The Other Circus in the Common, it came to the attention of the Connection because of the name Other. So far all she's seen is some pretty spectacular acrobatics and no sign of magic anywhere. That is what her report to Inspector Elvira Garcia will say. Although it seems many of the players are other, they aren't using any magic and as far as Jinx is concerned, it's none of the Connection's business they choose to stay in the Common.
As she's leaving a young man stops her to tell her the circus master wants to see her. Curiosity has her following the boy. The circus master wants to have an open discussion with her, but she holds him off saying she needs to file her report first. She agrees to return afterward since he believes his issue is most urgent. He also tells her to bring her dog in a tone more like a command, but he does add please.
From Elvira she learns that Cain Stilwell is most likely a werewolf activist Clark Farrier but really that's neither here nor there since it doesn't seem he leaves the common realm. He's certain that Alfie the missing boy was taken, and he thinks it was the boy's father Bentley Bronx. Bella and Alfie joined up with the circus after the witch who healed Alfie from his father's brutal beating, recommended them.
The circus is heading to Wales and in an attempt to make things easier on herself she asks that they swap out the cities, so they are near Caernarfon castle and Emory's court. She is also leaving Gato with them for additional security. Amber comes and finds the protection runes are intact so that's not an issue, it just means it's still possible Alfie just ran away.
Amber also gives warning that the dragons love their challenge tests and Emory can't help her at all or she can be deemed an unsuitable Prima.
The next day Jinx did all her normal things for the beginning of a case marking them as urgent for Hes do start with while she's meeting Emory's court. She does manage to speak with Cuth and Audrey about the challenges, but they don't have much information, just a note not to trust anyone, anyone could be in on it. Shirdal shows up to be her bodyguard since Bastion is off helping Lucy.
They are taking a helicopter, Emory's favorite mode of travel, to the castle.
Jinx is more than a little annoyed when she finds out the helicopter 'engine failure' was a hoax, but she did have fun parachuting out with Emory. Instead of immediately joining the others at the castle she goes to where the circus has set up to further her investigation and see Gato.
There's something going on there for sure. There's also a break in at her office where the information on this kidnapping case goes missing.
The challenges are petty and some are dangerous as the dragons test Jinx's ability to handle what's thrown her way.
Plenty of action, intrigue and romance in this one, and I love the part that Gato plays in this.
I'm glad this is a completed series, now starting the next book.
Challenge of the Court is the next part in the Other series and picks up from Book 4, Glimmer of Deception. Whilst it is not necessary, you do probably get a bit more out of this series if you have also read Glimmer of Christmas, and the Other Wolf series that follows Jinx’s best friend Lucy, who was turned into a werewolf to save her life in Glimmer of Death. In this book, our main character, Jessica Sharp, or Jinx (only her family and close friends get to call her Jessica), has been engaged to Emory, the Prime Elite of the Dragons, as well as many of the other sentient creatures of the Other. However, to be accepted by the Dragons, and actually allowed to become his Mate, and thus the Prima of the Dragons, Jinx must pass several challenges as deemed by Emory’s Court. It has taken a long time to set up a time for everyone to come together and meet between the different schedules of Emory, Jinx and the members of the Court, but finally a date has been set. At the start of the book, Jinx is just finishing up a job at a circus, one that supposedly has members of the Other using magic in its acts, and she has been sent to uncover them as a P.I., rather than using a member of the Connection. Jinx makes some interesting discoveries (I’ll let you read about that, no spoilers), but whilst she is there, she is approached by the head of the Circus, to ask for help, as one of his younger members has been kidnapped by the looks of it. Jinx finds herself in a quandary, the young teenager who has been taken, is actually a centaur who was hiding at the circus as it is a front for different people from the Other who have gone into hiding. They stay in the common so that no one knows that they are Other, so young Alfie just appeared as a teenage boy, not a centaur. Jinx can’t leave a missing child, but she also can’t leave the challenge, and so, she takes on both. Using Hess, her assistant who is still desperately trying to redeem herself, to do a lot of the leg work for her, Jinx starts a full-on hunt for the teenage boy, whilst at the same time, heading off to the challenge. On heading to the castle which houses the Court, she comes across Shirdal, the Griffin. Bastion is otherwise detained, busy with Lucy and so has asked Shirdal to come and look after Jinx. Shirdal is a brilliant character, all Griffins are assassins, they have an urge to kill, they can’t stop it, like we need to breath, they have to kill, they can’t help it. So, to alleviate that, they act as assassins. Most work under a code in which they won’t do certain things (No innocents, kids etc). Shirdal however, has turned to the light, and has given up killing, but it is painful for him, so he drinks to dull the pain, and is almost constantly drunk, well, that is the appearance he gives off anyway. He can go from slobbering drunk, to deadly assassin in the time it takes you to blink. But his dialogue is hilarious. He offers his services as bodyguard to Jinx, and she willingly accepts his services and friendship. Once at the castle, Jinx is subject to some pretty petty and pathetic ‘challenges’, things that are nothing but insulting, not only to her and Emory, but to the people involved. She calls out those involved, telling them they are pathetic, and if they want to challenge her, do it – and unwittingly walks right into a trap that has been set for her by a malicious Dragon, the Mother of Greg Manners who hates her for turning her son into a werewolf. And so, Jinx now faces a true Challenge, one not seen for several hundred years, and one that may just cost her everything, including her very life. And she still has to find a missing teenager yet!! This is everything you have come to expect from Heather G Harris, faced paced, fun, action, with magic, and lots of sarcastic wit that will have you laughing so hard you will lose your place (this is not a book to be listened to in public). As with all her books, the world building is just outstanding, from the different locations, to the various magical beings and the magic itself. The thing I really love about this story, is that it is so immersive, you really feel like this is an actual story, when Jinx relates something, you know she has done it (like jumping out of a helicopter to parachute), and you have to wonder if the Author has actually done it? Then there are emotional aspects to the story and you really feel them to – it is powerful writing and exceptionally well done. I love to, that whilst there is romance in her books, she doesn’t feel the need to get carried away, it is subtle, keeping it fun. Harris has a really clever writing style, and whilst she does confront things like death, and loss of loved ones (I mean, characters die, it is Urban Fantasy!!), she is both supportive of her characters, but also has a wicked sense of humour in other parts of the book to balance it out. Whilst the story is told from Jinx’s point of view, we get to see so many wonderful characters, Emory, Nate, Shirdal, Amber (have to love Amber!!), and of course Gato. There are a lot of other great characters (too many to list), but each one is brought to life with so much realism, you feel you know them so well! This continues to be a sensational series, one that is fun, engaging, with some really clever and captivating characters that you just want more of! An absolute must read!!
I’m supposed to be meeting with Emory’s dragon Court and amazing them with my suave wit and shining intellect. Instead I’m on the trail of a kidnapper. Someone has stolen away a centaur teenager, Alfie, from a magical circus. The circus master has hired me and Gato to find out who took him – hopefully before Alfie swims with the fishes. The problem is, no one in the circus is who they say they are. The Other Circus is a front for a magical underground, helping those that want to leave their magical lives far behind. They’ve spent years keeping their heads down and their mouths shut and it’s going to take more than asking nicely to get this bunch to crack. The clock is ticking, not just to find Alfie, but also for me to impress Emory’s dragon Court. When I finally meet them, I’m going to have to pass through a series of consort challenges before they’ll recognise me as Emory’s intended mate. Oh, and they won’t tell me what’s a challenge, and what’s not. Nothing is what it seems, but luckily I come with an inbuilt lie detector. I’m itching to prove to the standoffish dragon-shifters that I’m more than a pretty face but finding Alfie has to come first. I’m juggling things as best I can, but all it will take is one wrong move to bring everything crashing down on my head …
Heather's Notes I am so glad to be back with Jinx. I liked this book. I was a little disappointed that Emory was mainly on the sideline for this book, but it was still good. I liked all the characters that she pulled back in for this "adventure". I do wish Jinx had been a little more kick a$$ with Greg's mom, but overall a good book.
I think this landed more at 2.5 stars rounded up to 3 because I’m happy to be back to Jess and Emory. However, I don’t feel like we got enough of them together. I am coming to realize these urban fantasy books have a formula much like that of a cozy mystery, with the main character and the love interest relationship development mostly happening off page. I really want more interactions between them, I don’t need an open door love scene, but the best part of the story happened in books 2-4 where we saw more of Emory and the relationship build between them. It seemed like we were getting a good amount of them together in book 4, but Emory was essentially missing here. Not only that, but Emory didn’t trust Jess and that wasn’t addressed, she just seemed to act out her disappointment toward him in the moment and pushing her feelings of disappointment to him or something. It was very underwhelming and seemed contrary to her normal self. Not to mention it really did feel like Emory had a bit of a personality change.
Did I miss something being said about moving to Wales going forward? I’m so confused how Emory’s primary residence seems to be this castle, but how was he getting to Jess so quickly before now? I looked up a map of Liverpool to Wales and it’s not that far depending on where the dragon castle is in Wales (this becomes more problematic in the next book now that I’m about 1/2 way through it). It’s really not computing how we went from Emory being around at a moments notice in books 2-4 to MIA in book 5.
Lastly, what is the deal with this Evan storyline? I dont care for it and doesn’t make a lot of sense right now, and there are already soooooooo many side characters I think it would have been better without it since Evan seems like a little jerk and the angle of Emory being his ward is silly. Again, it’s not working into book 6 either.
I received an advance copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I am so glad that Harris returned to Jinx - her world, her dragon mate Emory, and her hellhound Gato. I loved Lucy’s books too - don’t get me wrong - and I think reading both series will be important going forward.
Jess/Jinx is looking into a missing teenager while also dealing with meeting Emory’s court of dragons - one of whom happens to be Greg Manners’ mum. (Read The Other Wolf series if you happened to like Manners in the earlier Other Realm books.) Jinx needs to win the dragons over in order to take her place as Prima by Emory’s side, but the stakes are high.
This book flew by for me, and as always when I finish one of Harris’ books, I’m left wondering why there isn’t another book already written for me to read. First of all, this book starts in a circus, and who doesn’t enjoy a good circus; who hasn’t dreamed of running away to join one? (I know I have.) I love Jinx and her friends. Shirdal the deadly griffon is back and he’s an absolute gem of a character. Jinx is still dealing with the emotional aftermath of some truths about Gato from the previous book. Snuggle your hellhound or battle cat while you can, reader. We meet Jack the mermaid (merman?) again! And there are new creatures and challenges, each one more deadly than the last.
Seriously loved the whole thing. It leaves you with unanswered questions which set up the next book/series perfectly, and I can’t wait for Jinx’s story to continue.
This was sooo good. We join Jess at a circus filled with members of the Other hiding out in the Common where she is quickly drawn into a case of a missing teen which she has to juggle whilst finally going to meet the Dragon court and face a series of challenges to prove she is worthy to be Emory’s mate and rule by his side. Those judgey, bloodthirsty dragons aren’t going to know what hit them haha. I didn’t realise how much I had missed Jinx, Gato & Emory and the crew until I was back in the thick of things with them. Mostly because I had been happily emersed in getting to know Lucy, Esme, Manners and the Pack in the Other Wolf trilogy. But miss them I had and it was an utter delight to watch Jess being Jess – taking no crap, standing up for herself and overcoming everything thrown her way with her usual aplomb and a little help from her friends of course. With this series I not only enjoy the main characters and story, Heather also brings life to all the side characters as well. Like Elvira the Connection Inspector – even though she only has minimal presence I still care about her and want to know more about her and see her move on with her life without Stone. And Amber oh I so want a spin off story about Amber. And I adore Nate and his bond with Jess. And circus Gato in his vest- OMG how cute. My only complaint is that it was over too soon but luckily we don’t have to long to wait before we can dive into our next adventure with Jess and the gang. I received an advanced copy and this is my honest opinion.
I was so thrilled to have another outing with Jinx and Gato, and boy, was this a wild ride! To prove to the Dragon Court that she’s a fit mate for Emory, their king, Jinx has to pass a series of challenges, both mental and physical. While Emory had worked out an agreement that none of the challenges would be seriously physically dangerous, in a fit of temper Jinx allows the dragons to lift this restriction, and all hell breaks loose!
Heather Harris’ books are always a joy, because the plots are filled with multiple story lines, and she’s then able to weave these multiple story lines into a satisfying and cohesive ending. This is truer than ever in “Challenge”, where Jinx is trying to solve a kidnapping case, deal with a break-in at her office, and still meet and survive a variety of challenges. One of the best things about the book is how well balanced the story is between intense, heart pounding action, and meaningful, believable relationships. You never lose the sense that these are real people involved in real dangers, and it’s a relief to know that Jinx’s friends are always ready to fight at her side.
Heather Harris was a “new to me” author discovery this past year, and I’m thrilled I found her series “The Other Realm” and “The Other Wolf”. She very quickly became one of my favorite UF authors, and I’m so excited she has this new book out, and that it is supposed to be very quickly followed by two more Jinx books. I can’t wait, and you shouldn’t either – if you haven’t read Heather Harris, you need to start now!
