Komunista: The Genesis of the Philippine Communist Party, 1902-1935

Rate this book
Komunista presents a most comprehensive and detailed history of the beginnings of what eventually became the Partido Komunista ng Pilipinas. It traces the roots of the movement to the labor federation formed from among gremios or guilds, neighborhood associations, and trade or shop associations of printers, tabaqueros, tailors, sculptors, seamen, and cooks. It provides portraits of the movement's leadership as it evolved through the years, notably citing personalities such as Isabelo de los Reyes, Juan Feleo, and Crisanto Evangelista.

Crucial historical account on the radicalization of Filipino labor leaders at the opening of the 20th Century leading to the founding of the Partido Komunista Pilipinas and its immediate aftermath.

Until now, I still remember the story of how Filipinos back then, of all educational backgrounds, used to smuggle communist books from U.S. just so Filipinos could read it here! I’m hoping to buy my own copy soon and reread this in the future.

Thanks a lot. I learned a lot for sure. Now I hope to get another book for the continuation of its history after WW2.
