THE JACARANDA TRAIL
A Journey of Discovery Down Under

Would you just sell everything, ditch your plans and buy a ticket to the other side of the world? In her twenties, the author did just that – and got much more than she could ever have bargained for...

Raised in England of British-Australian parentage, the author sells her possessions and flies to her birthplace in Sydney with no solid plans or timetable in mind.

Discovering by chance that she has another sister, a whole new world opens up: from living on a camel farm and picnicking with kookaburras, to paddock baths, unconventional lifestyles, City Farming and much, much more...

But, before she returns to England, she has one last thing to do: to go in search of her grandmother – the woman who left her daughter to be brought up by cruel nuns in an orphanage…

Alannah Foley... aka 'The Pyjama Writer'

Born in Australia, raised in the UK, Alannah is a writer of both fiction & non-fiction, covering topics as diverse as capers in a campervan, the vagaries of living with an obsessive cyclist, travels Down Under, and tales ‘full of twists, turns & tickles’ based in Cornwall where she currently lives.

She lived in her Aussie birthplace for five years in her twenties, and managed to return to Old Blighty devoid of shark or snake bite. Mozzies, however, did love to use her for target practice!

Alannah Foley was born in Australia and returned with her parents to England when she was a young girl. Alannah’s desire to see her birth place fueled the need to sell everything and head for Australia with her sister Ruth – and in her early twenties, she did just that.

Sydney, Brisbane, parts of NSW and Queensland became part of Alannah’s life, and with Ruth returning to England, she was able to play tourist at her own pace. When Alannah discovered she had another sister, and then her search located Lyn in Queensland, the meeting and getting to know her opened up a whole new section of her life. After finding the grandmother who had abandoned Alannah’s mother in an orphanage, Alannah decided it was time to return to England – to her dad and the rest of her family. The days of sun and surf were over – but would she ever return?

The Jacaranda Trail by Aussie author Alannah Foley is an interesting story of a short period of the author’s life, set in the outback of NSW and the dusty countryside of Queensland, as she searches for her identity. Recommended.

Paperback Copy

Going home is never easy; especially, to a foreign country where you were born.

The author backs up her life and moves back to Australia when she learns that she has a sister. She ends up meeting her grandmother whom who left her mother at an orphanage. We watch her rediscover herself and a world she used to know as she is thrown back into another world.

An entertaining quick read of travel.

The Jacaranda Trail by Alannah Foley was a delight to read, bringing to life the various characters of Queensland. I have travelled to Nimbin and no doubt went through Lismore but Nimbin was the place teeming with what I call 'rainbow characters'. And at least one person offered me a joint. Alannah has stayed in out of the way places which bring the bush alive and resonate with those of us from Oz. Finding her grandmother was a bonus as was a short history of her. Alannah's style of writing is also easy to follow and I look forward to the free downloads from the back of the book. I also appreciated her search for herself as I did it in reverse.
