Apollo Cafe is a daring and endearing effort from a white South African during the Aparteid era to report life in his nation from a nuetral view. In the title poem Grey looks tenderly at life in black Johannesberg with great compassion and respect. It is no more exemplified in the statement-"there are many Appllo Cafes", revealing the fact that by 'Apollo Cafe' he means a place where men can meet as equals. It is interesting to note this had to happen in a black town where a white man is welcomed...
