Billy Graham was an American evangelical Christian evangelist and an ordained Southern Baptist minister. Graham is best known for his evangelistic missions or “Crusades.” He believed God knew no borders or nationalities. Throughout his career, Graham preached to millions around the world. He met and prayed with every U. S. president from Dwight Eisenhower to Barack Obama.

Graham authored 34 books, including his memoir, Just As I Am. In 1983, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Ronald Reagan. In 1996, Graham and his wife, Ruth, received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest award Congress can bestow on a private citizen.

Graham married Wheaton College classmate Ruth Bell Graham in 1943. They had five children ( Ruth Graham, Gigi Graham Tchividjian, Anne Graham Lotz, Nelson, & Franklin Graham) and made their home in the mountains of North Carolina. They were married for 64 years before Ruth’s death in 2007. Graham died from natural causes on February 21, 2018, at his home in Montreat, North Carolina, at the age of 99.

Another fascinating book from this amazing man! Not only is it full of spiritual "stuff", there is discussion of practical advice for end-of-life considerations as well as legal information re wills, advance directives, etc. Always a treat to read one of his books!

This non-fiction, inspirational book could be required reading for all Christians over 55. It is practical about getting your “house in order,” and covers living wills, wills, burial, funerals, financial, and spiritual/afterlife considerations. It is not a fun read, but it is pithy. One of my favorite quotes is:

"Today we are confronted with so many voices telling us how to live. We are told how to look young, stay trim, keep healthy, have a good image, think positively, make more money, have more friends. All these are reasonable ambitions, but they indicate that we are trying desperately to cling to this present world. The truth is, life is transitory…If we want to make the most of life, we need to face the fact that it is going to end."

And this one:

"It has been said that someone found St. Francis working in his garden and asked him, “What would you do if you knew that you would die in ten minutes?” St. Francis replied, “I’d try to finish this row.'"

...the irreversible fact is that no matter what your diet, no matter how much you exercise, no matter how many vitamins or health foods you eat, no matter how low your cholesterol, you will still die-someday, some way. ~ Billy Graham

Billy Graham tackles the hard topic of death. I had a hard time at times reading this book because it is not a subject many people want to deal with. However, it will happen to all of us at one time or another. Although, those who trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior have eternal life and when they die, they don't actually die. (John 11:25)

3 practical things Billy Graham teaches in his book when preparing for death are:

1. Accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior;

2. Prepare a Will; and

3. Live a life today pleasing of the Lord Jesus Christ.
