Perfect Class

Okay...Tsubasa sets up a meeting with the person she believes is the King who was granting the various wishes of classmates no matter how twisted they may seem. With how this series has run so far it is a fairly common question of who the King really is (or if it was a supernatural element as I considered earlier in the series) so even though it seems the King is revealed in this volume I find myself questioning if this is another red herring to allow the story to push forward in its typical twisted style. That said if this is really the big reveal then I might be a little sad honestly because the story is following my predicted outcome though how it is playing out is anything if not unexpected still and I am still enjoying the series.

Also be sure to check out the Bonus Manga at the end called Takeru. I am sure if you recall he is Tsubasa's friend from school who has been a huge help since she seems to distrust adults. It is a story about a boy meeting a girl and stopping a bitter man baby from trying to get back at Tsubasa for turning him down. You know, school drama. :)

I knew it! I officially love Takeru!! I can't wait to see more of him after this mystery with the King ends.

But what about Manabe?

And stupid Arisa when she wakes up? Sorry, Arisa isn't stupid. I guess I just find her irrelevant even though the plot is based on her character and why she jumped from the top of a building.

I've caught back up with this series now (thank you, library), and have read volumes 5, 6, and 7. This series is...interesting. It has plot holes a mile wide (why has *no one* contacted authorities in all this mess? where are the responsible adults? oh, wait...there aren't any) and hook after hook that comes up empty. If I didn't expect this to happen, if I didn't understand this type of story, I'd feel a little used for having read it. It's not fair to the reader to take advantage like this when she's trying to take a story seriously.

But, I'm not taking Arisa seriously at all. It is, truly, a page turner. What will happen next? What crazy thing can they throw at me next? I still want to know. I'm still going to read it. I just have to work hard to suspend my disbelief, forestall any credibility, and go along for the ride.

Review for complete series

Despite living apart following their parents' divorce, twins Tsubasa and Arisa have kept in contact through letters. Where Tsubasa is somewhat of a school rowdy, Arisa attends a private school where she is all around popular and successful in her studies. After an incident that leaves Arisa in a comma, Tsubasa is left to wonder if her twin's life was all that picture perfect after all. She decides to take Arisa's place and attends the private school to find out what might have happened.

Andou's works often seem to sit somewhere between classic shoujo and mystery. Arisa gives us the common high school setting with a couple of common tropes. It does have a stronger focus on mystery though, one that deals with school bullying and class dynamics. It has a certain creepy edge to it which is largely based on how obsessive some of the students seem to be with the happenings of this tale. It starts off fairly strong but loses its momentum as the story continues. Perhaps 12 volumes were simply too long, but the further into the story we got, the more over the top and unbelievable the events seemed.

Unless there are some super natural elements involved, unhinged teenagers rarely work as a plot for me and so many of the characters have their moments where they just appear completely insane. The story dabbles in murder, bombs and other criminal acts and somehow adults and parents are virtually non existent. It just felt a little too far fetched that a whole class would get away with so much over the course of so many volumes.

I will admit that it is a fairly quick read as there are definitely many twists and turns that keep you turning the pages. I think it's fine for a one time read if you can get over the over the top drama. I enjoyed Andou's art. I also think calling this series a romance is very much mislabeled.

Dia bikin anak-anak satu kelas mesti menuruti perintah dia. Bahkan dia gak ragu-ragu untuk berbuat kriminal agar tujuannya tercapai.

*2.5*

That "reveal", if you can even call it that, was super lame. And honestly my interest is slowly dwindling, chapter by chapter.

The only spot of light was the bonus chapter, focused on Takeru and how he met Tsubasa. It was very cute and fun, so maybe the mangaka just has a bit more talent for that vibe?

Who knows, I just hope vol 8 is better.

Tsubasa finally gets to meet the King until she finds two suspects: Midori and Kudo. Which one is the real King? Kudo becomes the "King" and controls class 2-B to make them the "best class", putting innocent people in danger.

When I was in junior high: having sleep overs, crushing on boys, going to dances.

The junior high kids in 2b: in a crazy cult, pushing others off cliffs/into pools, and lighting buildings on fire…

Hmmm wtf??? lol

We got a good bit of backstory to Tsubasa in this volume. I'm not quite sure why we all of the sudden got info on the guy who loves Tsubasa..felt a little displaced.

Tsubasa arranges to meet with "K" at the place Arisa and Midori went to on Arisa's last birthday. Since Tsubasa doesn't know where that is, she's forced to ask Midori. She's shocked when After that there's a bonus manga: How Takeru met and fell in love with Tsubasa. He initially thought she was a delicate princess of a girl (totally his type) and later found out otherwise.

Tsubasa continues to plunge ahead without thinking things through, and she also continues to make assumptions. For example, she assumes that K, Rei, is the King because he (at this point, the King is almost certainly male) was the one who suggested that Arisa start King Time. I'm still convinced that the second King is Midori, but Rei is pretty messed up himself. Then again, so is approximately 90% of the cast (and that may be a low estimate).

The fact that the King doesn't have magical powers kind of ruins this series for me a bit. He isn't supernatural, some kind of low-budget Light Yagami, he's just a messed up middle schooler who can absolutely screw up. And he honestly doesn't seem to be that smart, either, despite what Ando wants readers to think. It's just that the other characters are so foolish that he seems brilliant by comparison.

Arisa is a multiple layered story with mystery elements. I highly recommend starting at the beginning and reading in order.

** This review contains no spoilers for Arisa 7 but will of course have them for previous volumes. **

The twists and turns of volume 6 left Tsubasa with both new information about the beginning of King Time and even more questions. The mysterious K at the other end of Arisa's chatroom might be Tsubasa's best lead on the King yet, but impersonating her sister is getting harder to keep up and the King of course continues to operate and shift power from a distance.

Arisa continues to be a very solid mystery. While progress is slow there's a lot of depth in each part of the story and each twist adds intrigue. This volume spins things in a particularly intriguing direction with some curious developments to puzzle out.

One note: As started in the last volume there is a 40 page flashback/side story at the end here, reducing the page count of the present day story. It was cute, gives further background on Tsubasa and adds insight into a supporting cast member. It's ultimately fluff and I would have preferred just continuing with the overarching plot, but it's not bad so no real complaints.

Seven volumes in and Tsubasa's quest to investigate King Time and help her twin sister is still going strong. Highly recommended.

4 stars for Arisa volume 7

Plot and Thoughts

Tsubasa is going to meet the mysterious "k" at that 'special' place where she had her first date with what's-his-face boyfriend....Midori?. Tsubasa finds Midori there. Midori tells her that Kudo told him that she wanted to meet him there. Kudo, there is no way that he is the King (personal opinion since he was introduced) and Tsubasa autopilots into shouting "ARE YOU THE KING?" She likes doing that. lol
Anyhow, Kudo takes over the King time as the representative and demands that everyone in the class follows his orders without question as he leads them towards "being the best class in the world!" It starts with practicing for a massive three legged race record, to studying to get top grades, to running a marathon, to saving people from a burning building, and worse, catching a murderer...
The last 40 or so pages at the end is a short backstory covering how Takeru and Tsubasa became friends (and the massive crush Takeru had (still has?) on Tsubasa!

On Order

In Conclusion
The flashback was super cute! The story itself is getting super intense. How are they going to catch a murderer? Very interesting. Haven't taken my eye off the goal yet, still thinking Captain Obvious is the one...but we'll see. Another interesting read. Now on to the next one!

Series Rating: 3.5Stars (first few volumes are 4 Stars)

I read this series in one sitting, which is quite telling in itself. However I will say now that the story does lag a bit after a few volumes and loses something of the great set up it had at the beginning. That said, the author Natsumi Ando is good at ending chapters/volumes with cliff-hangers. So you get to the end of one book and immediately want to pick up the next one. (Case in point – me.)

The art is excellent and was part of the reason I decided to pick this series up. As much as story is important if you don’t like that images it’s a struggle to continue but for this genre (shojo) Natsumi Ando style fits beautifully.

Tsubasa is likable and determined to find out what happened to her sister. As reader it was easy to be on her side. This series requires suspension of disbelief to some extent but you’ll enjoy Arisa more for it.

Oh, gosh, I'm still just totally hooked on this silly series! Although I will admit that I'm kind of ready for Ando to start winding things up--I think she's getting close. My favorite part about this volume was getting to see Takeru again, albeit a younger version--I've missed him since Tsubasa's been spending all of her time with Manabe lately. :(

Waaahh! Midori was the one who showed up in that spot. Gaah! I knew that Kudou had something to do wih this. Tsk! To be the best class? WTF?! And he wants them to be known to like everyone. Wow! He, himself set it on fire! I think he really wants to take his classmates with him to the grave. Dang. Nuts.
