The longest night in Nikolai Crowe's life begins when he's framed for murdering his ex-girlfriend, Jade Sho. To save himself and clear his name he must search for the reason behind Jade's assassination. He'll have to do so without getting caught by crooked cops, who would rather see him dead than captured. Detective Lucas Knox, assigned to hunt down the fugitive, turns his investigation in another direction when he has suspicions about Crowe's guilt. His hunch will take him on a long, twisted road that'll put his own life at risk. What will Nikolai and Knox discover and can it bring them to Jade's true killer? Luckily, Nikolai has help from a human clone identified as Alpha Replica 3007. This clone and a band of others like him have escaped their creator on Mill Rock Island. Now, this particular clone is guiding Nikolai toward something Jade left for him before her death. What did Jade hide and will Nikolai find it before the cops find him? When reading books by new and unknown authors like I do, it means that you never know what you're going to get.
Every now and then, you find an absolute gem, and this is one of them.
When I read the Prologue, I was reminded of Isaac Asimov's "I Robot", but that is where the similarity ends, except maybe for the fact that I can see a movie being made from this story.
At first, the many sub-plots may be a bit confusing, but that soon changes as Michelle weaves her way expertly through it all, and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat throughout. When I reached the three-quarter mark, I thought that the main plot was over and done with, and that the rest would be a boring wrap-up.
The author however, had other ideas, and held me riveted in her spell until the very last page.
I am emotionally drained - I laughed, I cried, and there were plenty of times that I said "What the %$#@!"
If ever a book deserved to make it to the NYT bestseller list, this is the one.
I received this book for free in exchange for my honest review.
Nikolai Crowe is accused of murdering his girlfriend Jade, but he knows that he was nowhere near her when the murder happened. He simply stumbled upon her body when she sent him a text message to come to a certain location. However, when security footage is shown, a man with his face is on the cameras, in an area where he was not. The only cameras that he could be on would be in the train station, but those cameras are useless at picking out one person among a sea of people. He has to escape the cops, who want him dead, and find the real killer. Luckily he is receiving help from a clone named Ebenezer. He is one of a group of clones who escaped an island that was keeping them hostage, but unlike the other clones, they have emotions.
Knox is a detective assigned to the case, but while the other cops are adamant about Nikolai being guilty, he is wary. He decides to do a second investigation, and he ends up finding out that things aren't as black and white as they seem.
This book was amazing. I was exhausted and woke up on top of my phone, which was still open to the story, and then finished it in the middle of the night.
I loved the idea of a story based on clones being sentient, yet still not being treated on the same level as humans. Clones have not been used in wars yet, but it is reasonable to think in the future that someone might want to consider that. However, that will always bring up the issue of what counts as being human.
I also loved the pacing of this story. Even though it was written from two different perspectives, I never felt lost, I never felt that it was too slow, and I never felt that it was too fast. This book was a smooth ride from start to finish, and I enjoyed every minute of it.
I recommend this book to anyone looking for an action adventure story, including clones. To people who enjoy YA novels, this does have a mature scene or two, but it would not be stressful to read by any means. Give it a try!
I received a copy of this book from voracious readers in exchange for a review.
This is a scifi sort of crime thriller about a man accused of murdering his girlfriend. I really enjoyed the twists, the storyline progression was really well-paced and I liked the scifi element in the story as well. There were a few funny dialogue moments.
The book did feel a bit cumbersome at times, with a few parts I struggled to get through and there are a lot of characters that took a bit to follow. The book has mixed race characters which was really cool. I liked that a lot.
It needs some spelling review, however. Maybe it's just this copy but how do you spell a capital city wrong?
This is an excellent sci-fi thriller. Nikolai is framed for murder and find an unlikely Ally in an escaped replica. Together, with a cop who feels like there is more to the story, they are able to navigate a minefield of political ambition and danger.
This was my first book by this author and I wish that I had discovered her sooner. This was a well-written read, with a fast pace, complex characters and a mystery that a page-turner.
