Wonderful poems that follow the daily path of life - great introduction to free verse for children. This is the type of book that will get children interested in poetry. Would be a fun book to read with children; a book that will become a favorite from one generation to the next.
See my review of Corn-Fed for a more in depth review of this six book series. Copyrighted in 2003 this will probably be my favorite of the series. The poems and their observations in this title will definitely appeal to adults in Stevenson’s corn but spot on humor.
One of the delightful books of poetry by children's author / illustrator James Stevenson. On the front cover fly leaf: This book is: %Daily Value sweet 100% salty 100% rich 100% tasty 100% sustaining 100% nourishing 100% comforting 100% INGREDIENTS: 25 poems that are perfect for a sunny day, perfect for a chilly day, and will make you smile. Delicious!
Very clever, says I, as is this delightful collection of thoughts-turned-poem.
One of my favorites? The Rule of Paint A can of paint always has more in it than you need, and it lives with you for the rest of your life. (illustrated, of course, with cans of paint).
Another favorite? Rough Guess (which celebrates a love of peanut butter).
I love Stevenson's illustrations. His books are shelved in the children's department at the library, but I think they speak volumes to adults. I really enjoy his insights. To paraphrase: If everything seems like it's falling apart, think of how many ways there are to put things back together (insert picture of tape, paper clips, and glue.) My review doesn't do this book justice. Go find it for yourself.
I don't think this is really poetry that kids would appreciate. All of the content is appropriate, but the context is more geared to adults. I don't know. There is a mix I guess. I would definitely have it in my collection. I love James Stevenson.
I do not know if it is me for being abnormal but I really enjoyed myself while reading this book. The poems have such a strong meaning to them as well as being extremely cute. I would use this as a read-aloud for a whole week during a unit on poetry.
Clever poems and illustrations done by James Stevenson. We enjoyed this book so much that when we finished it book, my kids said, "Put his other books on hold!"
