I was given this book in return for an honest review. A young research scientist and ex special ops, with grand ideas on finding the cure for autism and dream job with a major research company. Sounds great right? Wrong. When Dr. Margo Pullman finds out what kind of research the company is doing, and on children, on children no less. She does something that will change her life and the lives of the children forever. Evan, Alik, and Meg Winter(along with her Coyote named Maze) live with their mother in the country, home schooled, no TV, no radio, no contact with the outside world. Educated and trained to defend themselves, make bombs, etc. They think this is normal, they don't know any different. Each of the kids has something special about them, Evan can build anything, Alik has a photographic memory and Meg has an affinity with animals, all seemingly normal things, until they start getting a little something extra. When there mother goes on a trip to share her research, she gives them explicit directions on what to do while she's gone, and gives them an exact itinerary of her trip, when she will call, and when she will be back. When she fails to call or come home, the kids know something bad has happened and they call the only person on their mothers emergency contact list, Dr. Andrews. He immediately tells them to get their things together and not to answer the door or phone for anyone but him. Once he gets there, they begin to learn a bit of their history. Dr. Andrews, their mothers very good friend, will help them in any way he can, and starts trying to find out what happened to her. Once he discovers who has her, he know why. Unfortunately it is not good for the kids or for their mother. The kids set out on a quest to save their mother while their mother is trying to outwit her captors to protect her kids. In the end, the kids will find out much more about themselves and their origins, they will also find out they are not alone. I really liked this book, I thought the idea was original and refreshing. I love the morality of Margo and the fact that she risked her career and her life to right a wrong. The characters were strong and smart, not your typical teens, in a good way. When your kids are Metahumans, protecting them is going to be harder than you think. I never read the bonus chapters for the next book because then I'm just bummed that I have to wait, but I read this one because I just had to extend the story. Really cool, action packed book with great characters and a great story line. Other than some violence, I think this book could be recommended for ages 13 and up. Kudos to the author.
