I found this Japanese folktale predictable, though I'm sure young children wouldn't figure it out. I enjoyed it, however, for the grandfather's clever action, and for Funai's sharp, bright illustrations. Recommended--it would make a good readaloud.

This story was in one of my reading books in school. It has always stuck with me. I always thought that it was a very moving story about someone who made a great self-sacrifice in other to save the lives of many others. It still brings tears to my eyes.
