This book spoke to my inner core of compassion as a very young child. It showed me that my inherent need for justice and equality was not unnatural. I found a copy for my children, so glad it exists!
This was a real favorite growing up. Okay, yes, some of the stories are overly-PC, something I recognized pretty young. But a lot of them are just great; poems, short stories, historical biographies, excerpts from books that focus on strong women and standing up for yourself in general. I wonder if my mom still has this one...
I read this to all three of my childcare, daughters and son. It led to great discussions and I hope a better, more balanced sense of self-identity. And the stories are interesting and good fun as well.
One of my folkie parents' favorite reads for me (though curiously, I don't think they read it to me more than once; I had to rediscover it in high school to appreciate how subversive it is.)
