Jax Steele was a haunted man. A Detective by trade, damning visions of a wretched event had taken not only his soul but also the family he loved dearly. Living a shadowed life, he accepted every wretched case given with a vengeance, determined to right the wrongs of his horrible past. When young men began showing up slaughtered like animals, the nightmares began all over again, pulling him into his own private hell. All clues led to an elusive erotic artist of Russian decent who enjoyed the dark arts of BDSM and Jax believed he’d found his killer, yet intense hungers buried deep within were awakened and he wanted nothing more than to become Aleks’ student.
Aleksandr Vasiliev carried dark secrets of his own. A monster to some, the vampire had forsaken his past and the family regime in search of a new life away from murdering humans. Unfortunately his previous subjects turned up gutted and he was the only suspect. As Jax and Aleks forged a bond to try and find the murderer, each suspected something that neither could control. As the power of domination and control swirled around their relationship, Jax was forced to face not only his ugly past but also hungers that burned deep in his soul. Betrayed, Aleks was determined to save Jax, his true mate but powerful vampires from his past threatened not only his lover but, the entire human race. In a race against time few would survive.

I liked the premise of this story and yes I knew that there were hetero sex scenes. What I did not expect were the huge amount of typos and the poor editing that pervaded the story. I would highly doubt that the author even bothered with a second read. I did enjoy both Jax and Aleks. They were appealing much more as individuals than as a couple. The murders and the investigation seemed to get pushed to the background and the second half of the story was mainly concerned with vampire politics. I feel that the author played a bit too fast and loose with the cross over in plots. I almost gave up on the story but had too much invested and wanted to see the story resolved. The kicker was that it ended with a "to be continued" type ending. I will not be reading book two and suggest that fans of the genre pass up this story for a better put together book.
Ever since I first read Spankdown by Ms Dayne, I have been wanting, or should I say needing, to read more by this Mistress of Taboo. This is a lady who knows her way around words, twisting them in to a fantastic tale, drawing any reader in from the first word. Red Fire Surrender is another shining example of this. Books with male/male scenes are new to me for reading, let alone reviewing, but Ms Dayne is one of the few whom I trust to make it as wildly tantalizing as anything else that I have read to date. I was expecting sizzling, and she gave me boiling! All of the characters are strong, and clearly depicted. The different hungers were palpable, and I felt each as if they were my own. Each scene was filled with delicious torment, and the more I read, the more I was drawn in, like each of the models were drawn to the vampire, Aleksandr. This is a luscious combination of horror and the erotic; not an easy feat but Ms Dayne seems to unite them effortlessly. No one builds heat quite like Cassandre, and when there are sparks, an explosion is never far behind. This was a story filled with plenty of both.
Spankdown was a hot read. Red Fire - Surrender is like a volcano at the peak of an eruption. I can only delight at the thoughts of what is to come in Blue Fire - Domination and Yellow Fire - Acceptance.
This story started out great: the case was enthralling and the promised relationship was right up my alley - with a detective exploring his submissive tendency.
What we get for the rest of the book instead was convoluted vampires politic that distracted from the plot, and the main characters' relationship with other side character. In fact the whole book was about the relationship between Jax and the ER nurses, and not to mention most of the sex scene (and they are quite frequent as well) were between these two. It baffle me why the author invest so much in a relationship that will eventually be discard, and all it did was backfired and negate the genuineness of the supposed main couple. Not to mention, this is an mm book, I can look past 1 or 2 mf sex scene, but not a dozen of them. Especially when I find no pleasure from reading them. smh.
Oh yea and the cliffhanger ending was the final nail to the coffin for me.
I can't believe something with so many punctuation errors got published. Some of the sentences are near impossible to read because of the missing commas. Add to that the purple prose... DNF.
This is the kind of book that is a graphically detailed murder mystery that has an erotic edge. Wriiten in the minds eye that gives you the feeling that fires the senses as you see it through the characters eyes. When you think you have it figured out another element is brought into the story and leads you down another path. And just when you think you know how the book is going to end. You find out differently
Good story. Could use a nice thorough editing job. So many typos are distracting at best, often making it difficult to puzzle out what is going on. I will probably read the remaining books in the trilogy, hoping it continues to improve as it goes.
