In Shaded Vision some loose ends get tied up. The Sisters win some and lose some. Changes abound (Iris gets married, Delilah's relationship evolves, new enemies etc.) Still, while many things happen on the action scene line, the story thread doesn't progress that much.
It's stuck. On to the next novel.
Chase: Really, I'm sick of this guy. Why is he still around? And why is the storyline about him continuing to grow rather than dissipate? Just can't care about or like him. I'm lying, I don't like him.
Delilah: It's nice seeing her grow up, although she isn't the youngest. She does complain more than I want to listen to, otherwise, she is pulling her weight more. Shade is good for her.
Seamus Wow. Some new revelations about him. Just, ahem, wow. Wasn't expecting that.
Shade: I really, really like him a lot. He's almost too perfect in comparison to Chase. It will be interesting to discover more of his secrets.
Wilbur: I was asking about this guy and he appears. And has a host of secrets that may or may not have cost everyone. Now I have more questions.
Overall, this book was enjoyable but my expectations weren't met. The narrator is excellent; not issues there. Not sure what I wanted but more progression in the epic quest would have been nice. The New Big Baddie is bringing the ugly and it's scary! Can't wait to see how the sisters meet the challenge.
I've read all the "Sisters of the Moon" books. I'm only giving them two stars because they're snack books. They're like Cracker Jack; nutritionally indefensible and quickly consumed. I am not proud of my addiction, and I do feel like I should apologize to UT's English department for reading something called a "supernatural romance," but they are fun, and I enjoy the characters adventures. The sex scenes are a little explicit for my taste, and no one can call the plots well-crafted or subtle. The books are all soap operas with werewolves and vampires, but unlike Stephanie Meyer, Galenorn does not take herself or her writing all that seriously. These books are good for a rainy day's entertainment, which is not such a bad thing in the world.
Eleventh in the Otherworld / Sisters of the Moon urban fantasy series revolving back and forth between the points-of-view of three sisters. This story is from Delilah's perspective.
My Take I'm getting tired of Delilah's immaturity. Hasn't she any control of her kittycat side? It's just embarrassing. She's whining all over the place about how everyone is changing and, ahem, growing up. And she doesn't like it. It seems it's okay for Delilah to change, but not for anyone else. Even Shade is getting sick of her immaturity.
I did enjoy the boys' idea of a party. Typical. Cigars, drinking, poker, and Xbox. It's just when you combine these activities with dragon shifters, an incubus, a leprechaun, a demon, the fae, and an evolving human, well, it boggles the mind.
Oh, I love the sense of family in this series. They're talking about building a house for Iris and Bruce when they get back from their honeymoon. I am curious as to how big the D'Artigo sisters' property is…? Then there's the other side of family when Camille blows up after learning about Shamas' big secret. Gimme a break! How inane can she get? So Shamas learned magic. Has he done anything, anything at all to merit the way she treats him now? Bitch.
Oh, now just wait. They learn information critical to the safety of the spirit seals and...they postpone warning Queen Asteria!?? Will someone explain this to me. Turns out that Asteria has information on Chase's bloodline.
There is just so much action all over the place in this story, I'm panting with exhaustion. I'm really impressed that Galenorn managed to shoehorn it all into just one story.
The Story It's Iris' wedding tomorrow and the boys are staying home to have their own bachelor's party while the girls are out celebrating with the typical stripper and drinks. If only Delilah had some self-control, it could have been a great party.
Oh, it's just as well since Yugi calls to report a bombing of the Supe Community Meeting place. Just one of a series of firebombings. Seems someone wants to rain down retaliation, for the Kyonnai coyote shifters are back and they are ticked.
There's also a huge rise in hate crimes against the supernatural.
The Characters There are three D'Artigo sisters: Delilah, Camille, and Mennolly. They are half-fae and half-human with a lot of individual differences. They live together in an old Victorian in Seattle with their significant others, friends, and allies.
Delilah is the middle sister, a shifter into two types of cat, a living Death Maiden fated to bear the Autumn Lord's child through the services of Shade, a half-shadow dragon, half-Stradolan. Her dead twin, Arial, is also a cat shifter and watches over her from an astral plane. Greta is a Death Maiden and Delilah's teacher; she lives in Haseofon. Hi'ran is the name the Autumn Lord, an Elemental Lord, the Harvestman, has given Delilah to use for him.
Camille is the oldest and a Moon Maiden, a priestess to the Moon Mother. She's married to three supernaturals: Trillian is Svartan fae (he's teaching Hanna how to read); Morio Kuroyama is a Youkai-kitsune (Japanese fox demon), Grandmother Coyote's grandson, and he works death magic with Camille; and, Smoky, a.k.a., Lord Iampaatar, is a half-silver, half-white dragon shifter. Rodney is a bone golem, a gift from Grandmother Coyote.
Mennolly, the youngest, was an jian-tu acrobat-spy before she was caught and turned into a vampire. Now she runs the Wayfarer Bar & Grill, a bar and inn for supes. She's promised to Nerissa Shale, a lone werepuma who cut her ties with her former pride and now works as a counselor for FH-CSI. Mennolly is also the official consort to Roman, a natural and blood son of Blood Wyne, the mother and ruler of all vampires. He's an extremely powerful vampire in Seattle who steps up in this story. Vampires Anonymous was founded by Wade. When Sassy died, her will gave the VA her house and estate which has been turned into VA headquarters with Erin Marshal, Mennolly's child, as its official secretary. Mari is Wade's assistant, an Earthside Fae. Frederick Corvax is the new vampire regent for the Northwest.
Sephreh ob Tanu is the girls' father who preferred to follow his lover's directives than stay loyal to family. Humph, didn't seem to do him much good!
Allies and friends who live at the house include: Lady Iris Kuusi, a Finnish house sprite and Priestess of Undutar as well as the girls' housekeeper, is pregnant and about to marry Bruce O'Shea, a leprechaun who will be starting a job as the head of Irish Studies at the University of Washington. Rozurial is a mercenary and incubus as well as one of Mennolly's lovers. Vanzir is a dream-chaser demon we all thought was without his powers. Maggie is their baby calico gargoyle. Hanna is a hostage rescued in Hexed: Ice Shards 9.5, who now helps out at the house. Shamas ob Olanda is the girls' cousin and full Fae. He works Earthside for Chase, and he's been hiding some powerful secrets that have Camille super furious.
Detective Chase Johnson heads up the Faerie-Human Crime Scene Investigation (FH-CSI). Events in Bone Magic 7 have changed Chase. He's evolving into something other. He learns some news about his bloodline and it's freaking Chase out about his relationship with Sharah, Queen Asteria's niece, and an elfin medic with FB-CSI. Yugi is Chase's second-in-command. Mallen is another elfin medic. Frostling is a new hire at FH-CSI and is a full-blooded Fae.
Queen Asteria is the elfin queen and caretaker of the seals the girls have recovered so far. She has formed the Keraastar Knights to wield the spirit seals. Seems that Amber's brother Luke has some ability to wield one (see Harvest Hunting 8). Trenyth is her assistant (and we suspect he's in love with her). Alfina is an elf who was raped.
Carter is the half-demon, half-Titan leader of the Demonica Vacana Society with a new assistant/lover, Tobias, a djinn. Grandmother Coyote is one of the Hags of Fate, who helps the worlds retain balance. Tim Winthrop, a.k.a., Cleo Blanco, runs the website for the Supe Community Council. Jason is his partner and they both come to the wedding. Wilbur is their neighbor and a necromancer whose time in special ops leads to unexpected consequences and some terrifying discoveries. Martin is his ghoul with a weird master-servant relationship.
Marion Vespa is a coyote shifter who runs the Supe-Urban Café. She was a huge help in Harvest Hunting 8. Aid that backfires horribly. Trixie Jones is her sister. Exo Reed is a wolf shifter who owns the Halcyon Hotel, a hotel that caters to supernaturals. He's been an absolute rock in the community. Claudia is his wife and they have kids. Thomas Creia is a weredog with a wife and two boys; his sister is Shane. Salvatore Tienes is a wolfshifter; his uncle is Geraldo. Wylie Smith is a coyote shifter and Delilah's first real case.
Amanda Flanders, Neely Reed, and Carlos Rodrigues are with the United Worlds Church. Full humans. They are pledging their support to the Supernatural Community along with the vampires and the Triple Threat.
Telazhar is a necromancer who's been training demons for Shadow Wing, a demon lord with plans to invade and conquer earth before he continues on to Otherworld. Van and Jaycee are a pair of Tregart sorcerers we've encountered before (Harvest Hunting); a pair who got away. Gulakah is the Lord of Ghosts, the latest general from Shadow Wing. Newkirk is a regular at the Energy Exchange and he has a spirit seal. Feris is a Tregart demon.
Trytian is a daemon who can't make up his mind which side he will support. All the girls know is that he doesn't want Shadow Wing either. A new perspective on Van and Jaycee has some horrendous consequenes on some of his soldiers. Andy Gambit is a disgusting xenophobic pig of a yellow journalist. You so want to read this one as he gets his in this story!
Elaqneve is the Elfin lands in Otherworld (OW), which is a human generic reference for another dimension where many of the elves, gods, and Elemental Lords, etc. all live. Access to OW is through portals. The Sidhe and Fae themselves call it Y'Eírialiastar. The city-state in OW where the girls were raised is Y'Elestrial and is ruled over by Queen Tanaquar. The Ionyc Seas are a current of energy by which some of the supernaturals can travel.
Talamh Lonrach Oll, the Land of Brilliant Apples, is what the Triple Threat are calling the land they bought in the foothills of the Cascade Mountain Range and they are recognized as a sovereign nation by the U.S. government.
The Court of the Three Queens (the girls call them the Triple Threat) is that of the three Earthside Fae queens: Titania is the Queen of Light and Morning of the Seelie; Morgaine is a half-Fae Queen of Dusk and Twilight; and, Aeval is the Queen of Shadow and Night of the Unseelie. They all come to the wedding. Camille's pledge to Aeval's court has caused their father to disown her. Turnabout is fair play and the girls' have disowned him as well as resigning from the Otherworld Intelligence Agency. Now they work for Queen Asteria.
The Cover The cover is shades of gold. A golden forest forms the backdrop for the short-haired Delilah in her black, gold-trimmed tank top and faded black jeans, a black cat snarling in the background. Oh yeah, those tattoos of Delilah's are starting to come in quite colorfully.
This book was just really annoying right from the start. The PI, supposedly tech-savvy, doesn't know Mario is Nintendo not Xbox (people who have never gamed know this, its a decades old franchise). Her idea of a masterful Google search is ridiculous. Add quotations marks? You don't say. The overarching plot between books is still not really going anywhere, there's lots of whinging, and the sex scenes are rehashed from previous installments. On the bright side, I think this is the point where I'm able to break out of the masochistic tendency to follow a series through to the end - why bother when there's clearly not going to be a resolution for at least the next few books/years?
I tried to read it. I really did. But I was put off by Del's shallow relationships. Yes, that's sad to say, since I like the other sisters, Del really is the 'second stringer' sister.
First the whole story felt really tough to swallow. Why is a policeman consulting Del and why is Del involved in a police investigation? It felt strange to me, given she's NOT IN LAW ENFORCEMENT. Then the sisters all practically tell the victim's families about people they ALLEGEDLY feel might be responsible for the crime? It just felt really silly. What if they are wrong and someone gets lynched or killed because of this foolishness? The victims should sue.
Then there is her relationship with Shade. Shade is so poorly developed and weakly written He's the rebound guy and their relationship seems really to have devloped far too quickly. Del hardly knows this guy, and yet, they are soul mates in a matter of weeks? Then Del is willing to be a member of this Autumn Lord's harem and his servant on earth without so much as a protest? Doesn't sound fun to me. Sounds like she's getting used.
Eh, I found myself interested in other characters in this story. I found it strange that even in Del's book we are talking about Camille. In Del's lovescene she ruminates that her sister likes Anal more. I get everyone likes Camille, but really?
I also really don't care about Chase, and the constant hyping of how secretly wunderbar the guy is. We got enough of chase being kidnapped twice. I could really love a Chase-free story. Plus, the way Del is totally fine and buddy-buddy with Chase after the breakup felt really forced and artificial. I don't care for it.
Del is supposed to be a PI, but I can't remember the last time she actually took a case.
Eh... I'm going to pass or skim Del's books from now on.

It was a fun read, but I wish Delilah had grown more. The scene where she and Shade are discussing her hair balls and liter box. Really? We're at book eleven and she's still cool with her room literally smelling like sh*t?
Also I know they can't win 'em all, mostly cause that would mean the series would be done now. But the way they went after this book's Spirit Seal was just stupid. Why hash it out in a huge battle on the enemies turf? Why not find the evil person in possession of it and catch them off guard and snatch it? They knew who had it early on but they never simply went after the bad guy that had it. Even though they knew a crap load of other people were after it.
Poor Zach. He got done dirty. And we never got to say goodbye.
And can we please talk about Sharah. That b*tch is shady as hell. She wanted Chase from jump. She's the one who sent Delilah to the office to catch Chase banging his ex. I bet she had a hand in Delilah getting her hands on the immortality potion. Then Chase is all confused and adjusting after taking it, says he's not ready to date, yet next thing you know he's dating Sharah. And now she "accidentally" get's pregnant?Wait what? Otherworld has the most full proof birth control ever. You go to the witch lady, she halts you fertility until you go back to her and reinstate it. So how could she accidentally get knocked up, and how could Delilah not point that out to Chase? What is her real deal? When she screws them over it will be royally (pun intended) and I won't feel bad for them in the least.

This book was pretty good, and a LOT happened in it, but it feels like *just* a four-star "very good story that I really enjoyed." Why? Well, there are a couple of reasons. The main one being that Delilah is my least favorite of the three D'Artigo sisters. (I think this is a new thing, too. I'm pretty sure that in the beginning, it was Menolly - the vampire - who held the title of Least Favorite.)
Delilah's stories haven't been as enjoyable for me since Shade came into her life. And this is odd, because I was thrilled when Shade entered her life. But as the books go on, we still haven't seen much of what Shade is - half-Stradolan, half-dragon - or what he can do. We've been told that he has a dragon form, if only at night, but we haven't seen it. Shade feels sort of two-dimensional to me. And their sex scenes! Sex between Shade and Delilah reads awkwardly. :-(
Shade so hopefully he'll be more fleshed out in the coming books.
The events in this book took place in February, so we also It was beautiful. I cried. :-)
And there were a lot of battles in this book. So very much went on that it was rather tiring for me the reader. (It was also tiring for Delilah, et.al.) It took me four days to read this book. That's twice as long as it should have taken. And while I think I'd have happily read it faster if it hadn't been for a few very time-consuming distractions I was faced with this week, I do think some of the lesser distractions in my life might have been more easily ignored had I not felt overwhelmed by all that was happening.
Interestingly, all of the other books in this series are also chock-full of many things. But this book, with Delilah at the helm. . . Well, I just didn't enjoy her POV as much as I used to.
Anyway, it turns out that prior to this book, six spirit seals had been found (). In this book, we finally learned of the seventh spirit seal:
Van and Jaycee, the made a return appearance in this book. They were responsible for all of the fights that took place, I think.
I was really pleased with how the Seattleites stepped up to counter the bad protests. Supes, including vampires and fae, the GLBT community, other humans...it was great to see everyone rallying to prevent the bad protesters from having much say. And I loved how Tim - with help - was able to mobilize the good group so quickly. :-)
Chase learned
And then in the end, :-)
After that announcement, Delilah, et.al.,
One final thought I have. . . At some point in this story, Delilah dropped an F-bomb and Camille (and others?) looked at her askance, as Delilah doesn't often curse. Well, in this story, she seemed to say the F-word on quite a number of occasions. I didn't mind it, but it contributed to my feeling sort of disconnected from Delilah in this book. It felt out-of-character every time she used it. So, between Delilah's cursing and Shade. . . :-(
But this was a good - even very good - story, so it gets a solid four stars from me.
After proofreading my "completed" review, I realized that I forgot to mention. . . :-)
I also enjoy this series. I like the variety of paranormal elements and the characters are always so dynamic. I did find that this was more feel good with the big family event and I like a stronger conflict driven plot. Overall it was good.
This is book 11 in the series. If you are a fan of the series, you will not be disappointed. If you aren't familiar with the series, you should probably start with an earlier book so you won't feel so lost.
I was afraid this series had jumped the shark for me after the last installment.Thankfully this novel, has gotten me to want to stick with it.It went back towards how it had been when I eagerly awaited each new book.It dealt with the sisters trying to fit into both of their worlds and the fight for the spirit seals.
This is a hard book to rate and review.I still like the premise of the series and the characters.I have enjoyed most of the individual stories very much. But there are problems with the series and it has aspects that I simply do not like. Some of these problems are typical of this type of series. The main character(s) start off as someone not that different from most people, they just have an edge or two.But as the series continues, they become more and more powerful(and therefore the villians also become tougher)until it is hard to relate to them as someone like you.Another difficulty is the ever-increasing information of the series. This is a double-edge sword. It is great to learn this much about the characters and their world but with the books coming out every 9 months or so, it covers a lot of time and pages to remember everything. Some of the problems relate to this series specifically.Since the books revolve between the sister's viewpoints, characters shine bright and dim with each novel. When they are the central character, they burn like a 100-watt lightbulb while th other two sisters are more like 60-watt bulbs. The rest of the characters are usually just dim 30-watt bulbs. All of the sisters are becoming harder as the series progress or as they say they are losing their rose-colored glasses. There is another lesson they could be learning.Everything isn't always black and white, but more often there are shades of gray.
Having said all of that, the series does seem to be evolving. While the sisters and their allies are getting stronger, they still occasionally get beat or screw up.This keeps them human(as opposed to superhuman). There are scenes where the characters act as an ensemble instead of one bright spot and a bunch of extensions. Also while it is still normal to have the sisters say you are with us or against us, they are becoming more willing to work with people they used to kill on sight.
Of the three sisters, Delilah has always been my favorite. She is the most innocent and happiest of the sisters. She adds a breath of freshness to the sisters that helps to keep hope in their overwhelming battle against Shadow Wing.Even though she has lost some of her naivety, she is still the most optimistic of the three.
If this series were movies, they would be rated NC-17 due to graphic sex, language and violence. This novel took some steps back form the trend of all of these increasing. There is only one sex scene(and doesn't go into the details that some of the other books do).The language is lessened as is usual with Delilah's stories. But it was like a snowball rolling down a hill, it started infrequently but picked up speed as it went on.A strange thing is it was actually refreshing seeing other 4 letter words besides the ever popular f-bombs.The violence like always is present but is not overly detailed or overbearing. There are a handful of typos throughout the book. One example is when they call Marion "Mario" which is confusing because Mario is also a character. While not that many, there are more than I would expect from a larger publisher.
Shaded Vision is the eleventh installment in the Otherworld series by Yasmine Galenorn and a Jove Paranormal Romance.
Book Blurb:
It’s the night before Valentine’s Day and we’re preparing for our friend Iris’s wedding. But when we get word that the Supe Community Council has been bombed, things get really ugly.
The coyote shifters - the Koyanni - are back, and Newkirk, their new leader, has joined forces with a group of rogue sorcerers. Then, just as we think things can’t get worse, the demon lord Shadow Wing sends in a new front man, and life really goes to hell...
My thoughts:
Iris and Bruce got married! For me, that was the highlight of the book.
Delilah is the sister I have connected with the least, and Shaded Vision is told from her POV. I just find her boring and to be quite honest, Shaded Vision was a bit boring as well. Especially after the last book, Courting Darkness.
I’m ready for a showdown with Shadow Wing - instead of his minions. I would like for this portion of the series to move along a little faster - instead of hanging overhead like a faceless threat.
Chase found out a little about his heritage - which was intriguing - he also made a last minute announcement that I am eager to find out more about.
Hannah is settling in with everyone - and may be getting cozy with Roz - I hope so, for both their sakes.
Shamas also made an announcement - his didn’t go over so well, especially with Camille.
All in all, the personal stories in Shaded Vision had more of an impact on me than the plot.
I give Shaded Vision 2 out of 5 stars.
Menolly’s book is next, Shadow Rising, coming November 2012. I am looking forward to that installment.

I was super excited once this book came out! The D'Artigo sisters are by far my favorite group of paranormal gals!
This book follows Delilah(and her sisters of course) There are bad guys, more bad guys, family issues, a few happy moments and romance.
With the Bonecrusher gone everyone thought they would get a break. Well, think again. Even with the wedding on the horizon(for Iris of course) they just can't seem to get a break. Someone is blowing up Supes--starting with the Supernatural Community Hall--right where Delilah herself was supposed to be. Now they seem to be targeting specific perople that mean a lot to Delilah. Whats a tabby cat like her to do? Enlist the help of her sisters, the gorgeous men that Camille is married too(yes--3 of them) her amazing and gorgeous half dragon lover, Shade, and all her other various friends. They will get to the bottom of this before all the supes in the city are taken out. When trash reporter Andy Gambit comes into the picture you just know there is something heinous going to happen. I really don't like that guy! With the help of her past love, Chase, they enlist some humans who want there to be equal rights for all humans and supernatural.
Along with being a tabby Deliah is also a Death maiden and she will face her most difficult task yet--Claiming her first Soul for the Autumn lord.
This book was gripping. It jumped out, grabbed hold and didnt let go! I read it in a day!
There is pleanty of action, mystery, love and laughter--So everyone should be able to grab hold of this book and never let go!
I am partial to Delilah so I think this is the best yet--i am anxious to see where the sisters and all of their family and friends will go next.
I can't really explain what is wrong with this book for me, because there were parts I really liked, but overall I felt like this one is lacking.
I loved the bachelorette party that the sisters and Iris had. The antics that went on were classic and about what you expect when they all get together. The wedding was great too, I really am glad that Iris is happy and being let to be happy.
One of my issue with the book was Delilah's whining. There was multiple times it seemed like the story stopped as Delilah needed time to wallow in what her life was, complaining how things were changing and she was having a hard time adapting. One time things were so bad that she changed into her cat form. Yes things have been in turmoil with them, but it has been like that for a couple of years, you would think that by this time she would be used to it.
I really liked the hate crime portion of the story. What appealed to me was how all the Supe's, along with some humans, fought it. They didn't use force, but protested in the media and won people over to their side.
The overall big war for the seals seems to be going on. The sisters still aren't always sure who's helping and who's hurting them, but doing the best they can.
It looks like there are still more big changes ahead, I can only hope that Delilah can deal with them.
It was good read, as always. But I guess, so many events and happenings that happened without rest that it became so taxing. Well, Delilah's character and personality is growing and maturing but she is the same Kitten that has joy around her but I guess, I myself need a break with all the fire and death and injuries that has been happening. I could use a kitty nap myself.
And well, I fell out of love to you Chase. I don't know. Too much too fast with Sharah, I guess. And my heart still broke for Zach, aww. Wish there was a happy life for him. Shade maybe growing on me but I love the Autumn Lord best.
4/5 ⭐️ This book overall was really good but I didn’t like it as much as I’d like the past books but with that ending I am definitely hoping that I’ll like the next one. I’m glad that we get to see Narissa and Menoly in the next one!
The sisters just want to give Iris & Bruce the wedding the so richly deserve, but they are at war & there is no break. Evil sorceress, ghosts, zombies all get in the way. Additionally relations between the super & human communities are tough.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as I have all of the others in this series. Action, believable dialogue, a smidge of romance, and, of course, magic all make this a great read.
A bombing rocks the supernatural community, stunning them with fresh grief, anger and worry – who is behind it? Fingers instantly point to the human anti-supernatural hate groups who are growing louder and more vicious with each passing day. The newspapers engage in the worst kind of “journalism” and there have even been a string of rapes attached to anti-fae hatred.
But how much is it the human haters, and how much is it a new scheme by the demons, newly reinforced with forces of nightmare from both the demon world and one of the worst Sorcerers in Otherworld’s history coming to Earth to further their quest for the spirit seals.
In many ways, this book brought the series back on track to a degree. After a few books of endless distraction, personal drama and side-plots we returned partially to the main plot and partially to a dominant side plot. And, frankly, it was about damn time because the series was rapidly losing itself.
But now we have dramatic bombings and tackling of two major issues. Firstly - the human prejudice against the fae and the supernatural in general, how difficult that is making things and finally rallying to strike back against that and do something concrete to shift the tide of public opinion. I like that it was addressed and they finally did something rather than spend several more books wasting chapters on lamenting on it but not actually doing anything. I think it was generally well done with some very good ideas but also that it was rather simplistically fought and defeated. The big bad was too careless and too easily brought low, the general community was too eager and too easily rallied against hate (which, if history tells us anything, is rather dubious since the non-affected community is usually far more apathetic than that). It was good, it was nicely addressed – but it was a little simple.
The second storyline was the big one – Shadowwing! The big bad is actually on everyone’s radar again. We have bombings, investigation, killing off bad guys, alliances with the demonic underground and generally being back on track. As a bonus, I think we’ve also seen the last of at least 2 pernicious elements that were clinging to this series way past there should-have-been-dead-and-buried dates.
Of course, this wouldn’t be an Otherworld book without endless distractions: Chase’s heritage, Zachary’s new life, Shamas’s secret, Delilah’s completely failure to live like an adult and keep clean and Iris’s wedding. Some of them were good – like the wedding, but a lot of them were also really really pointless. There’s also a real problem with character and storyline bloat that necessitates a lot of recap. My bright spot is that I think a lot of these storylines are being closed.
A lot of this book is introspective and deals with how much the D’Artigo sisters lives have changed but also how much they have changed as people as well. And part of that is regretting the change. I’m torn on this – on the one hand, I wish it weren’t Delilah doing these musings while at the same time I have to admit that she is the one most likely to. The problem is that Delilah has always been rather immature and childish and she was coming out of that – some of these musings feels like a step back. I also have the least grasp of Delilah’s love interest Shade because he’s just… there. He dropped in from nowhere and became Delilah’s One Twu Lub even more abruptly and with even less screen time than Menolloy’s Nerissa. So when Delilah laments about the past I almost feel like she is resenting her sister’s happiness because I quite simply don’t believe hers.
The D'Artigo sisters can never seem to catch a break. It should have been a happy time as they prepare to celebrate Iris's wedding. But things go from bad to worse when the Supe Comunity center is bombed the night before, and that is only the start. The Koyami are back and wreaking havoc yet again as they team up with another of the girls' past nemesis, a pair of nasty sorcerers. Meanwhile it looks like Shadow Wing is gearing up for another fight as he sends a new general to amp up his side of the war, and he may just be the worst one yet.
In the past several installments, the war against Shadow Wing has been mostly in the background as the sisters had other issues to deal with. However, in Shaded Vision, that fight is back, front and center. The girls learn some pretty terrible things, that change their view points on the last few months, and bring to light a terrible new threat. With each new installment, I always wonder how the author is going to be able to top the previous threats so things don't start to seem like old hat. While I doubt Hyto's absolute cruelty and horribleness will ever be able to be "outdone," I will say that the new threat in Shaded Vision is pretty scary, just in a different way. Instead of being targeted at just Camile, this one is a danger to all of them, and they will definitely have their work cut out for them.
In my review of Delilah's last book, Harvest Hunting, I had talked about how much Delilah had grown from the naive tabby cat we met in the beginning of the series. However, after reading Shaded Vision, I can't help being a little frustrated with her. Yes, her rose colored glasses are gone (as she calls them), but she was pretty whiny about it. I realize that she misses being able to always believe things will be okay, but now she has turned into a pessimist about pretty much everything. She also had many break downs over the changes that were going on. In fact she seemed rather selfish in her desire to have everything back to they way they used to be. She wants her sisters all to herself, and a small part of her seems to resent their significant others. I remember her being very resistant to change in the past, but not to the point of selfishness. Although I will say that she felt guilty about these feelings, so I have hopes that she will work through them and continue to grow.
I didn't enjoy Shaded Vision as much as some of the other installments in this series, and a lot of that had to do with Deliliah's behavior. Now, I'm not saying it wasn't a good book, I just couldn't seem to get myself as invested as I normal do in the sister's trials. Then again, any book would have a hard time following after the incredibly, but emotionally exhausting previous installment, Courting Darkness. So while I am giving Shaded Vision a mediocre review, this series, still remains as one of my favorites, and I will eagerly await Menolly's next installment, Shadow Rising.
I love the Otherworld series but this book is probably the weakest for me. Delilah is my least favorite of the D'Artigo sisters but I really liked the direction her character was going and the fact that she had grown so much. The last book that featured her, Harvest Hunting, was amazing and I had high hopes for this one. It's really hard for a book to top Courting Darkness so I wasn't expecting it to but I felt a bit let down after reading Shaded Vision.
Delilah seems to have taken several steps back from the last book. Yes she is is still a Death Maiden and growing up but she seems to be fighting it tooth-and-nail. She's jealous of the relationships that everyone around her happen to be in and she came across seriously negative and whiny at times. She has a man who loves her and tolerates her nastiness and instead of being her positive self she doesn't seem to realize that the world may be coming apart around her but she has Shade and he would do anything for her. She also has her family even if she can't spend every moment of everyday with them. I'm hoping that by her next book she will have grown out of the seriously bratty little sister phase and become the bad ass Death Maiden she was destined to be.
I can't say the book was bad because it wasn't. It actually had a few really great moments. I always love when she loses control and turns into her tabby self and the stripper moment is the best of any of her Kitten moments. I laughed so hard I scared my dog. Iris's wedding was beautiful and I love the direction that Vanzir seems to be going. I am so glad that Yasmine didn't have Smoky roast his ass for what happened with Camille. Vanzir is a very interesting character and I can't wait to see what's in store for him in future books.
The one storyline I'm on the fence about is Chase. I was never a fan of Chase and didn't want him with Delilah. He just came across as a complete douchebag to me and I wanted nothing to do with him. That being said, his character has grown by leaps-and-bounds and I'm really curious about his heritage and how it's going to affect him. Surprisingly enough, I've really grown to like Chase. What I'm on the fence about is his relationship with Sharah. Yeah she comes across as a good person but something is revealed at the end of the book that was unexpected and left me with a very bad feeling. I'm now questioning her motives and it made me go back and look at what happened between Delilah and Chase more closely. I don't know if it's just me or if the things I'm questioning will come to light in Menolly's book.
Overall, Shaded Vision was good and I still feel that Yasmine Galenorn's Otherworld is one of the best UF series out. I'm really looking forward to Shadow Rising. I'm hoping that Menolly's connection with Morio will FINALLY be addressed since it is her book.
After reading the first three books, here I am ready for the eleventh volume of the Sisters of the Moon series. Yes, I know, I have a little hole in my reads but I’m surprised to say it didn’t bother me at all. Well maybe it’s better to read them in order, it’s true, but once we know Delilah, Menolly and Camille, we don’t have a lot of questions.
This novel presents us the story from the Delilah’s point of view this time. We can immediately understand it by the beautiful cover we have. I think it’s a character that has evolved a lot since the beginning of the series, she was so idealistic and it was difficult for her to see how the persons could be mean sometimes. But she became a strong woman, determined in her choices, despite it’s not easy for her sometimes. She is however, always helped by the mysterious dragon, Shade. I confess I really want to learn more about him.
This book starts with the explosion of the paranormal creatures center, killing many persons in the same time. A terrible act that will also cause the agitation throughout the supernatural community. We can feel the strong tension all along the book between humans and Faes. The feeling makes everyone very uncomfortable, as the cruelty is sometimes unlimited.
We therefore will follow the investigation of our three sisters who are determined to find the culprit behind this threat. But when some old enemies join their forced with others, things get complicated, and it’s far from over. The story is always more and more complex and our three half-Faes won’t have the time to be bored. I think it’s the reason why the wedding between Iris and Bruce is highlighted, it’s the only real pause in the hostilities we have all along the chapters. We can easily get caught in the moment and enjoy each second.
This new book is a quite fast read, it’s always a little difficult for me to get hooked by this series but it’s a great sequel. We discover some new problems, some new alliances will be settled and some big battles are coming. I was immediately intrigued by Chase in this story and about what he will become now; I can’t wait to learn more about that as well.
All the researches were very interesting, mainly when we discover so many stories difficult to untangle. With no clues at first, our sisters gradually approach the truth which then allows us to discover little by little what is really going on.
To conclude, it was a good novel, I think now I can go back to my fourth book if I don’t read book 12 before.
Folks have been giving this a serious bash about the head and shoulders but honestly, I think this is one of my favorite thus far of the series. Delilah grows, but she is still fallible and learning. Very much human, for all that she is only half!
Yasmine Galenorn has a real genius when it comes to the Sisters of Moon series. In today's paranormal books, so often authors decide to use our modern current world as the setting... while at the same time refusing to allow their characters any knowledge OF this world. We've all groaned in the horror movies where, despite the 40 years of movie history where ALL blonds wearing highheels and tight sweaters inevitably get killed when they decide to investigate (usually with nothing more than a flashlight in hand, because lord knows they aren't going to be sensible and take a weapon. Or at least a cellphone with 911 on quick dial - even though they KNOW the serial killer was last seen in their street!) that odd noise in the basement.... finds the blond blindly going into the basement. Not so in the SoM books. Cliches are known to be cliches, and are loudly derided and avoided.
It's a wonderful well written fluff read. And 'fluff' isn't a criticism here. We NEED books that will keep our attention while letting us tune out the world around us for a bit. Well written action, characters who grow and stumble, love and lost, sex that will make you grin (and subconsciously feel the need to read under the covers when you start to blush) and just a wonderful read. These books are in a category that is growing finally (a bit too slow for my tastes, but things are improving!) - a modern woman's adventure book. Lots of daring do and action, without being just a bodice ripper.
Galenorn's approach to love - in all flavors - is also spectacular. This book begins to tackle more then just the sister's attempts to find love and the seal's. Instead, equal time is spent dealing with prejudice, bigotry, and divisiveness and honestly... if Yasmine Galenorn ever wants to run for office, I'll happily vote for her in anything she would want to try running for, her view on equality shines through marvelously. Just so long as she didn't quit writing for public office.
And if it help proves just home much I love her books...
I own papercopies of all - along with digital and audio. This is a truly excellent piece of work.
In this 11th book of the OtherWorld series, the D'Artigo sisters are celebrating their friend Iris' upcoming nuptials on Valentine's Day. The ladies enjoy a bachelorette party, and for the first time in a long time, they get to have some fun together! When Camille seems suspicious of an exotic dancer hired for the event, Iris's stomach has other plans. Of course, the night isn't all fun and games as they get news after they return home of a bombing of the Supe Community Council. In between investigating the bombing, they D'Artigo sisters and their extended family and friends are all on hand to celebrate their friend Iris's wedding to Bruce and send them off on their honeymoon.
This story is told from Delilah's point of view (as each book is told from one of the POVs of one of the 3 sisters), and I love how her character has evolved through the story. She has always been the one who had the most innocence. Whenever she had been stressed, she would shift into her were kitty shape, and play. Sometimes her shifts would happen without any control, especially whenever she saw anything sparkly, like some fun fringe on a certain dancer's thong, lol. But, she has a second were form, that of a were panther, and is also a Death Maiden for the Autumn Lord. One of her assignments as a Death Maiden brings some much needed answers to their current investigation.
The bombing incident points to sorcery and the Koyanni coyote shifters (whom they encountered before) who have joined forces together. Then, just when things seem to finally be going their way, the demon Lord Shadow Wing sends in a new front man, and he's tougher than anyone else they've faced before!
This was definitely a page turner with something different around the corner! I loved the tender moments between the fighting, especially between Delilah and her lover Shade, who is half dragon, and sent to be with her by the Autumn Lord. We are still learning things about Shade, but I like how their relationship is growing, and how they are learning to live together... Including a discussion they have about Delilah's messy tendencies.
I strongly recommend you read this series in order [Witchling, Changeling, Darkling, Dragon Wytch, Night Huntress, Demon Mistress, Never After (anthology), Bone Magic, Inked (anthology), Harvest Hunting, Blood Wyne, Hexed Anthology"ice shards", Etched in Silver novella and Courting Darkness] prior to reading this installment.
I didn't enjoy this installment as much as I thought I was going to and it took me far longer than I would've liked to finish this book. The story started off really slow. The main investigation was disorganized and filled with too many secondary character interactions.
This installment did not do Delilah any favors, she looked like a tag-along in her own book. Most of this book seem to be about everyone else but Delilah. Shade is a HUGE mystery; the author could've spent so much more time delving into his background and how his fate intertwined with Delilah's. That alone could've made one heck of a story.
I rated this book 3-stars because the story was interesting. Albeit, the whole novel felt like a set-up for the next installment; basically a huge waste of time and felt like the sisters were running in circles chasing their tails.
I think Iris's wedding should've been a novella on its own. Instead it was mixed into Delilah's journey with the two parts colliding and feeling mashed together. The wedding took up most of the beginning portion of the book. I enjoyed Iris's background adventure from the Hexed anthology and would've enjoyed a short story on her wedding just the same.
One thing I did like is that the men in Delilah's household are fully domesticated and don't mind pulling their weight at home. They also don't mind "manning" the home front while the sisters go out and handle their business.
I recommend this book and series to fellow dark urban fantasy readers and will read the next book Shadow Rising due out 10/30/12. I also recommend: Night Myst (Indigo Court, Book 1) Blood Song - Cat Adams Bloodstone (A Deadtown Novel) Once Bitten - Kalayna Price On the Edge (The Edge, Book 1)
I've noticed people commenting on Delialah's back-sliding in growth. I too started to think that way, but then a thought occurred to me. She's always been the weaker one, the younger one emotionally, more naive. She HAS grown, by leaps and bounds. But if you truly follow the series, then the last book and what her oldest sister, the "rock" of the three went through, then you have to take that into account. Though it physically happened to Camille, emotionally I think Delilah lived it as well. And I think it's also important to note that Delilah isn't as sexually open as her sister. This too could impact Delilah in terms of the rape Camille suffered at the hands (talons/claws) of Hyto.
One other note-there are quite a few errors in spelling and grammar. I've also noticed a few transposing of letters, and at one point, when Delilah is speaking to Shade about the fun atmosphere of the night before being interrupted by a phone call, she states the call came from Chase, when it actually came from Yugi. Chase was in attendance at the festivities. I'm thinking, that because there is such a high demand for her books now, her publishers are pushing Yasmine Galenorn a little to hard. And as a result, the editing process is suffering.
In the end, after finishing the book, I'm glad Delialah's whining stopped. There were fewer errors deeper into the book. I'm satisfied with the story. I'm glad they got back to the meat of the issue, something that was forgotten in the previous book. I will stick this series out to the end, because I'm committed. However, interest is waning a little bit.
Taking place on Valentine's Day, it's apropos for me to read this on Valentine's day. I haven't been following this series as much because it seems to have lost it's steam. It keeps dragging out the big show down and giving each of the sisters more powers. Just reading about what they go through on a daily basis makes me tired.
In this one, the story is from Delilah point of view. Things are still going bad as they try to wrestle another seal away from the evil side. On top of it, haters of those who are not full blooded human seem to be causing lots of problems. When the three sisters are involved, they find out it's more than just humans causing problems.
There is a huge cast of characters in this story. For the most part, they are easy to remember. And really, it doesn't matter which sister is the "I" in the book because they are identical in voice and thought. They may be different "supernaturals", but Ms. Galenorn is not able to distinguish them from each other from a personality standpoint. She thinks she does but not enough for me to notice or perhaps care. I still read the series because I want to know how it all ends. I know how I think she'll end it but I want to join in on the ride.
This book isn't remarkable but it isn't bad. I still enjoyed it on a snowy Saturday afternoon. Recommended for those who like a bit of sex and a lot of mayhem caused by "pure evil".
The Otherworld series runs in books of three, each book revolving around one of the three sisters. This is the 11th book in the series and the 4th book about the middle sister Delilah. As usual there's Trouble afoot in the greater Seattle area, and although Iris, their sprite housekeeper, priestess and friend is about to get married the bad guys don't care and try their best to ruin the wedding day. Someone blows up the Sup community center and although it seems at first glance it is the human hate groups it isn't all it seems, and not all those in the hate groups are all they seem either. The evil sorcerers Van and Jaycee are back for revenge and friends are targeted as the stakes get higher when the 6th spirit seal is discovered. As always I find the overall story engrossing and the character development is strong and evolving. I'd have liked to learn more about Shade but I suppose now that they will be getting married we will in future books. My only problem is one I've had with all the books, the crude language in the sex scenes is just a bit over the top, but those scenes are not the central point of the book and are relatively short. Another really enjoyable book in the series, I like how there are new people and stories being woven in but that the main plot isn't being abandoned or changed, it will be a long wait until book 12 (Shadow Rising) is released in November.
My thoughts: I've been a fan of Yasmine Galenorn for a while now. I love the series and always look forward to each book. This one wasn't as good as the last, even though a lot of stuff happened. I joined Audible again so I listened to it instead of reading it. I think that had something to do with my feelings on this book. The narrator seemed to make the book boring to me and even made the sisters seem like total whining wimps (which I know they aren't). Even what few sex scenes there were seemed boring. Delilah's books seem to have fewer sex scenes in them anyway. I definitely will not listen to it on audio again. It seemed this book was just to set other stuff up for later books. Which doesn't make it a bad book at all. It was kind of sad about Zachary...
I am looking forward to the next book to see how things pan out. I hope the sisters finally have an upper hand on things and get one for the good guys again.
What was one of the most memorable moments of the book?
The most memorable would be Chase going to Otherworld and finally getting to see it. Also finding out some about his past.
Which scene was your favorite?
Having said that about the sex scenes, one of them were my favorite :) The Autumn Lord, Shade and Delilah.
Do you like strong characters that continue to grow and develop? Not to mention kick butt fight scenes. Then this is the series for you! Yasmine Galenorn has a round robin series, where the POV is changed in each book to a different lead character. IE: Book 1: Camille, Book 2: Delilah, Book 3: Menolly, Book 4: Camille, etc. I find this method refreshing and you get to know the main characters even better since you are seeing things through their eyes. Each book is not the same plot, and the story continually progresses.
In Shaded Vision (book 11), Delilah is the lead character and she is personally my favorite. Her character continues to grow up and be a strong woman that was not really there in the beginning of the series. There were a few parts that I did not like, such as talk of hair balls and litter boxes that she is too lazy to clean. Some events that happen are Iris bachelorette party and wedding, a bombing, a family secret revealed, fight scenes and much more. I could not put this book down, it kept me entertained and wanting to read more. Now to wait until the next book is released.
