I love dthis book! It is a little outdated because it was written in 2004, but it has good information. The pictures are a little outdated, too, but I learned quite a lot with it. Hence, it is a good book.
I finished this eons ago, but never got around to actually entering it here. I really didn't read it; it's mostly a picture book that I scanned while eating lunch one (or two) days.
There are some lovely buildings here. There are also some really ugly buildings. Thanks to my dad--who felt that above all, buildings should be practical and usable, even if that meant sacrificing 'fancy' and 'creative'--I take a lot of modern architecture with a grain of salt.
I think one day what I might like to do is take an architectural tour of the world, seeing all the really different kinds of buildings humans have come up with from yurts to Chartres.
This was a fascinating look at unique and spectacular architecture from all over the globe. The mix of Ancient though modern architecture really highlighted how styles, techniques and the capability of architects and engineers has evolved over time.
Each building was accompanied by a high quality photograph. Most were in color, some were in black and white. There were many categories discussed, one of my favorites was how one certain building influenced the design of others.
The text was entertaining to. Not dull or drag it was lively and imparted some really interesting facts about each building. One of my favorite spreads was pages where the Great Pyramid of Giza was compared to the Luxor Pyramid in Las Vegas, as well as other pyramids.
You can take a global tour through buildings in this book.
Enjoyed this book casually. It was on the news stands and I really looked more at the pictures quickly than gave it a thorough reading. Them that is more studied in architecture and have other books with which to compare can provide more in depth critiques. No doubt this book does have many great examples and photos.
I really liked this! It was nice to get a snap shot history and background on some amazing buildings! And some I hadn't seen before. But it was missing some key buildings that I thought for sure would be in here
