Obviously inspired by goodnight moon, but beautifully illustrated, with a sense of humor and interesting perspectives.
If I had to nit-pick one thing, the bareback rider is sitting in a saddle on her horse...

A fun journey through space and time to follow two dueling magicians as they compete in the Night Circus. The characters were both plentiful and complex. I never felt like I fully understood them and their motivation, but I spent the entire book wanting to learn more. I devoured it in just over one sitting. I felt like I'd taken a vacation from reality once I was done!

Night, Circus
I have looked for this book and had it on my reading list for so long! Thank you, Open Library, for adding this. It’s not so much a *story* with a plot but an illustrated view of the things you’d see in a night circus. Even though the book was short, it was worth the wait because the pictures were so enchanting. I can see myself not only reading this as a child if I had one but owning this myself as a child. I love that the picture of the lion tamer isn’t the traditional version with a whip. Rather it’s a grandmother with the lions surrounding her in a bed reading them a story. The one of the Night Bareback Rider I’d hang on my wall (without the rider). She’s backward. I wonder if it was meant to be that way. I also love the illustration of the night strong man and the night elephants. The whole book has a sort of “Coraline” feel about it. This is the kind of imagery and place you’d visit in a really good dream and then wake up feeling nostalgic! The only thing I didn’t like is when you get toward the end of the book on Open Library a few of the pages don’t show up so I feel like I’m being cheated on some of these beautiful illustrations! I would buy this book even as an adult and have posters made of the images.

Rating: 8 This is so charming and captivating! I’m glad I found it!

Loved this original story with lots of Shakespeare under tones. "We are such things as dream are made of".
