Matt Christopher is the writer young readers turn to when they're looking for fast-paced, action-packed sports novels. He is the best-selling author of more than one hundred sports books for young readers.

Matt Christopher is America's bestselling sports writer for children, with more than 100 books and sales approaching six million copies. In 1992, Matt Christopher talked about being a children's book author.

"I became interested in writing when I was 14, a freshman in high school. I was selling magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post, Country Gentleman, and Liberty, and I would read the stories, particularly the adventure and mystery stories, and think how wonderful it would be to be able to write stories and make a living at it. I also read detective, horror, aviation, and sports stories and decided I would try writing them myself.

Determined to sell, I wrote a detective story a week for 40 weeks, finding the time to marry, work, and play baseball and basketball before I sold my first story in 1941, "The Missing Finger Points," for $50 to Detective Story magazine.

After writing and selling children's sports stories to magazines, I decided to write a baseball book for children. I was living in Syracuse, New York at the time, working at General Electric. I spoke about my idea to the branch librarian. She was immediately interested and told me that they needed sports stories badly. So I came up with my first children's book, The Lucky Baseball Bat. I submitted it to Little, Brown, and the book was published in 1954.

I'm sure that playing sandlot baseball and then semiprofessional baseball with a Class C club in the Canadian-American League influenced my writing. I had my own personal experiences, and I saw how other players reacted to plays, to teammates' and fans' remarks and innuendoes, to managers' orders, etc. All these had a great influence on my writing. My love of the game helped a lot, too, of course.

Out of all the books I've written, my favorite is The Kid Who Only Hit Homers. It's a fantasy, but the main character in it could be real. There are a lot of boys who would love to play baseball but, for some reason, cannot. The only difference between a real-life boy and Sylvester Coddmyer III is the appearance of a character named George Baruth, whom only Sylvester can see and who helps Sylvester become a good ballplayer.

I've written many short stories and books for both children and adults, and find that writing for children is really my niche. Being the eldest of nine children (seven boys and two girls), I've lived through a lot of problems many children live through, and I find these problems excellent examples to include in my books.

Sports have made it possible for me to meet many people with all sorts of life stories, on and off the field, and these are grist for this writer's mill. I'm far beyond playing age now, but I manage to go to both kids' and adult games just to keep up with them, and keep them fresh in my mind.Very few things make me happier than receiving fan letters from boys and girls who write that they had never cared for reading until they started to read my books. That is just about the ultimate in writing for children. I would never trade it for another profession."

Matt Christopher died on September 27, 1997. His legacy is now being carried on by his sons, Duane and Dale Christopher.

Personal response: I had the opportunity to read On the Field With Derek Jeter by Matt Christopher. This book really focused on following your dream and never giving up. If everyone had Jeter's work ethic and determination to follow a dream this world would be perfect. I really enjoyed this book and it also taught me quite a few things.

Plot:Derek Jeter grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Ever since playing baseball he wanted to play shortstop for the New York Yankees. When Jeter was a young child his dad would work with him after school by hitting grounders. Jeter learned that he can not make every play unless he practiced. Once Jeter got into high school baseball a lot of scouts started looking at him. Derek started at shortstop midway through freshmen year. The next 3 years of high school he never missed a game at shortstop. Major League scouts wanted him really bad but were unsure about drafting Derek directly out of high school. The only team Jeter wanted to be drafted by was the New York Yankees. The Yankees did not contact Derek until a week before the draft telling him if he slips to the number five pick in the draft they would select him. Jeter got drafted by the Yankees and worked very hard in the minors but struggled early.Derek spent his first two years in the Minor Leagues. Then as year three began he would start his season on the Yankees roster, which was a dream come true for Jeter. Jeter won five world series with the Yankees. Derek also played in nine All Star games. Derek Jeter is a legend and you can not take that away from him.

Characterization: This book is told in third person point of view talking about the life of Derek Jeter. Jeter as a boy always cared about someone else before himself and that never changed. Joe Torre motivated Jeter more than anyone else. Jeter looked up to Torre his whole career. As Derek got older he started a charity. Jeter is a very caring person and would never put himself before anyone else. His passion about baseball is what makes him different than other players. Jeter's nickname is The Captain. Jeter loved baseball more than anything other than family. Derek worked for everything he has today. Derek's drive to be great is what makes him special.

Setting: The setting moves around a lot in this book. The most common place this book takes place in is New York. This book takes place in the 1990's and into the 2000's. It also takes place in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Other places consist of Major League stadiums. The setting is very important because if we were playing baseball on a football field that would not make any sense.

Thematic Connection: The main theme in this book is to follow your dream and never give up. Jeter reminded himself everyday that he will someday play shortstop for the New York Yankees. Jeter knew that at a young age he would have to work hard to pursue his dream. If Jeter would of one day just stopped thinking about his dream it may not have happened.

Rating: I would give this book five stars because I learned a lot on how to follow your dreams. Jeter is one of my favorite baseball players of all time. I would recommend this book to high school athletes both girls and boys.It is a true story that makes you think about life.

Personal Response
The biography of Derek Jeter was a very good and interesting book. The obstacles he had to overcome to get to where he wanted to be when he got older were unbelievable. Derek had to get his name out to people someone way, because he came from a small high school. I think he set a great example for other kids that have a dream of playing professional baseball. It showed the effort that you have to put into things that you want to achieve in your life.

Plot
Derek was that really good baseball player from a small school, not getting many looks from colleges. He always had a dream to play for the New York Yankees as a shortstop. His dream would come true. Once Derek had his name being mentioned and people realizing how good he really was, it was not the college scouts looking at him, but MLB teams. Right away though, Jeter was disappointed that the Yankees really didn't show any interest in him. That would change as time passed. The team realized what Derek brought to the table and how he could really help out their team. In years to come Jeter made a name for himself in the pros. He led the Yankees to world series wins and multiple team pennants. Derek Jeter will go down in history as one of the greatest players to ever play the game.

Characterization
Derek was a three sport athlete in high school which he excelled in all sports, but really stood out in baseball. He was a great leader for his teams always setting the example on and off the field. Derek was the one to stay after practice just to make himself better. He never had a big head and always treated others with respect. Knowing how good he was, he still did all his school work before he would go practice baseball, because he knew education came first.

Impact of Setting
The majority of the book took place in Michigan in the 1980s when Derek was starting to become a man. He then went on to attend Michigan University to get his business degree. Once he got drafted he moved out to New York and spent many of his years out there. It was hard for his parents to see him leave but they knew it was the best for him. His parents traveled all over the country to be at a majority of his baseball games. Mainly baseball is played in the spring, but Derek found a way to play it all year around to just make himself better.

Audience/Recommendation
I would recommend this book to any high school baseball player who has a dream of playing in the MLB. Derek shows the hard work that goes into achieving a goal like that. On the flip side it shows all the benefits of reaching your goal. Derek Jeter is a great role model for people and myself to look up to.

Book Title: On the field with… Derek Jeter
Author: Matt Christopher
Review: On the field with Derek Jeter was a very good book! I enjoyed this book because it gave me a lot more information about my favorite Short-stop in MLB History and Also more information about my favorite sport and what it takes to get at the level of success Derek Jeter is in today! The Main setting of the book was for a little while in Derek’s summers was at his Grandparents home while his parents went to New jersey to visit Family or sometimes in the backyard working on Derek’s game. Some of the main characters where Derek jeter, Charles and Dorothy jeter The parents of Derek. The main conflict of this book was About the life of Derek Jeter and the steps he climbed to reach the level of success he was at and to leave a legacy that he left behind him and continues to carry on! I would recommend this book NOT ONLY to baseball players but any athlete that wants to be successful both on the Court/Field and off the Court/Field, Because this book shows that Derek Jeter worked very hard at pretty much everything that he did to be a great baseball player and great citizen/person.

Derek Jeter is doing amazing. Joe Torre made him captain. Derek has moved up in the line up to 1st or 2nd. Also Alex Rodreguize had signed with the Yankees to play 3rd base.

Personal Responds
This book told about Derek Jeter and about his dream to become a shortstop for the Yankees. Although it was difficult at times, he never forgot his dream and worked hard to achieve it. I found this book difficult to understand in some places. I wish this book talked more about the Yankee’s, not just about Derek Jeter. I would have liked this book to have told more about his downfalls and not just about being so good. I did not recognize some of the players names because I didn't grow up in this era. This biography told about Derek Jeter’s whole life and following his dream. His dream started at a young age and he kept working toward it. I think this book has some good points about teamwork, leadership, and community service.

Plot
Following Derek Jeter’s dream of playing shortstop for the Yankee’s, but reaching his goal brought many ups and downs. His parents encouraged him and his classmates and teachers in school laugh at his dream. By playing with his dad, his skills surpassed his teammates so they learned to respect his abilities. Being biracial brought him more challenges in school. Later in life his race was not important as he became a successful shortstop.

Characterization:
Derek Jeter was determined to become a shortstop for the Yankees. His father, Charles, was his number one supporter and believed in hard work to achieve his dreams. Charles’ motto was, ”If you are dedicated and you work hard all of you dreams will come true.” Derek and his father were pleased with his MVP awards, gold glove, silver slugger, and winning many championships. Yankee owner, George Steinbrenner, bought the expensive players he thought would win the World Series.

Impacts of the Setting
This story starts in Kalamazoo, Michigan and follows Derek Jeter's life through his professional baseball career in every baseball stadium. His favorite place to be was Yankee’s stadium where the fans cheered loudly with love and admiration. This book covers the years between 1974-2009, from his dream to his success. This covered 15 of his 20 years as a professional baseball player.

Audience
I recommend this book to any baseball fan. Mature adults would be the preferred audience because it includes many older names I did not recognize. Men and women would enjoy this book equally. I gave this book three stars, because it lacked excitement yet it contained many fascinating statistics. I consider this to be an average book, but not as good as other Matt Christopher books I have read.

Have you ever wanted to be something that seemed more like a dream than reality? Maybe like be a professional athlete? In the book On the Field With...Derek Jeter by Matt Christopher, this dream becomes a reality for Derek Jeter. The purpose of this book is to tell the young and great life and career of Derek Jeter. Matt does a great job showing that hard work pays off. The book says “Derek grows up as a talented athlete but tries much harder than most others.” “Derek had to tries his hardest at school in order to play baseball.” This quote teaches the audience that sports are not and should not be the main focus for anyone.

The theme of this book is to show hard work pays off. I’ve heard “hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.” Derek is an exception because he worked hard at baseball and was the most talented. In the book it says “Derek would always want to play catch. We threw for a couple hours a day.” when his Grandmother was asked about Derek when he was young. He put his heart into the game and he is now making millions of dollars a year. Derek Jeter is almost the perfect example of the hardest working player documented.

Matt Christopher uses narration in this biography. He tells a detailed life of Derek and how he should be everyone’s role model. He states “Derek is one of the best in the game of baseball and his ego does not get into the way.” The style is effective more for a younger audience because it has simple and understandable writing. He wants the younger people to believe in their dreams. This book is a good book and not very long. It could have been more detail and specific.

My opinion of this book is it’s a very well put together book with lots of life events of Derek. I really like how Matt wanted to have people like Derek and show he’s a good person. The only thing I did not like about the books does not tell much about his teenage life. They tell a lot about his life from around 5 to 10 years of age. Matt says “Derek played catch with his grandma” and “he stood out as the best but was not aloud to hold his spot as short stop for little league.” After that, it skips to his junior/senior year of high school baseball and then to his professional career. If I were in Christopher’s position, I would have found out more about his life before the fame. I have read other books like this but they were more detailed than this book.

I read On The Field: With Derek Jeter! By: Matt Christopher. I think Matt wrote this book to let people know that no matter how good these players have it, they worked harder than everyone else to get it. Derek Jeter was naturally good at sports; baseball in particular. This does not mean he walked right into the MLB. He had to work for it his whole life. I think the author wanted to show that nothing that Derek did to get there was easy.
This book has a certain theme to it. I would say that the theme is saying that hard work brings big rewards. The chances of Derek Jeter becoming the shortstop for the Yankees, his favorite team, were extremely low. With a ton of hard work and dedication, he achieved his goal. To me, that is very inspiring.
In this book, the author uses a style that gives off the impression that he was very close to Jeter. It really helps you connect with Derek and the story. This was a very unique way of writing in my opinion and it worked perfectly for what the author was trying to say. For example, in the book, the author talks about Jeter's personal life. He talks about his childhood, his parents, and his school. This helps the reader connect with Derek outside of his baseball career; and that is very important.
You can also tell the author has a very good opinion of Derek Jeter. Throughout the book, he talks about how much skill and talent that this player possesses. He also talks about Jeter's academic power, his kindness, and his caring personality.
In conclusion, this was a pretty great book. I really enjoyed getting the inside scoop on how an amazing player came up. It really did open my eyes. I have a newfound respect for professional athletes thanks to the author and this book. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys sports!

I think that On the Field with...Derek Jeter was a very interesting book. Derek Jeter had an interesting life. For example, he was born on June 26, 1974. His parents names are Charles and Dorothy Jeter. Thanks to his father, who also played baseball, Derek's love for the game started early. As a young boy, Derek would play pitch and catch with his grandma. Derek was very smart and very good at sports such as baseball and basketball as a kid. Derek enrolled at Kalamazoo Central High School. His success led him to be sixth pick in the June 1, 1992 draft to the New York Yankees, which was shocking because Cincinnati had fifth pick and were going to pick Derek, but didn't. Derek was the first player to be drafted to the MLB out of high school. He still wanted to go to college before playing in the MLB. So, he went to the University of Michigan. In the locker room, before Derek played his first professional baseball game, sitting under his name was the jersey with the number 2. If a player had a single-digit number, that meant that they were expected to play great. The only two single-digit numbers that the Yankees have that haven't been retired yet are the numbers 2 and 6. In Derek's rookie year he was named American League Rookie of the Year. Derek was soon one of the best shortstops in the league, improving each year. After Derek's arrival the Yankees won the World Series 3 of his first 4 seasons as a Yankee.

Some people might not want to read this book because Derek Jeter is on the Yankees. I like this book because it is about baseball, well written and about a player. There wasn't really anything that I didn't like about it so I couldn't complain about it. This book is similar to the Matt Christopher's other books he has wrote and almost all of them are about sports and I have read a lot of this books and I really like them and I hope to read more.

I read the book "On the Field with Derek Jeter. Matt christopher is one of the best authors when it comes to writing biography's about athletes. He has wrote books about Lebron James, Alex Rodriguez, Kobe Bryant and so on. Christopher starts off the book with where Derek Jeter is at now as he is a baseball player in the MLB on the New York Yankees. The book got interesting because Christopher talked about the obstacles that Derek had overcome through out his young baseball career to get where he is now. Derek Jeter came from an small high school but that didn't matter for him to make it to the major league. The book also talks about how hard Derek had work to get where he is today as he lived and breath baseball. No matter what sport you play Derek is one of the best role models in sports. Derek handles himself with great manners on and of the field and does not get caught up in distractions outside of baseball. Derek knows he got an job to get done and he is all about business but loves to have fun on the field. This is an good book that gives you good information about the Future Hall of Famer Derek Jeter and the best shortstop in baseball history and if not he is close to the best.

Dear Sharon

I'm reading a book entitled On the feild with... Derek Jeter which is a work of a autobiography. I learned while reading that even when Derek Jeter was a small chiled he wanted to play shortstop for the new york Yankees, and achevd his goal which makes me think about my own life and if i commit to something that i can fufill it no matter what the dream is. Through reading this book i've observed that Derek Jeter has the will and determination to do what he wants and stick to it, you dont just meander into big things like this. If i were him i would also do the samething to be able to end up with a result that i like.

This book made me relize that Derek Jeter has one of the most amazing so called dream storys every. By that I mean is story to get to fufilling his dream. I would just like to know what if Derek Jeter wasn't a shortstop, what would he be doing today for a living? If there were to be anthor book on Derek Jeter in the futuer i think it would be after he becomes a hall of famer when he has reached his apex. He is trully absoutlly that good at what he does no bogusness completlly 100% true.

The reason that I gave this book a 3 star rating was because this book was in a genre that I don't really like. That genre is biography to me biography is very boring because I am the type of kid that likes reading about genres like action/adventure type of books. Anyway, back to the book the book was about Derek Jeter and how he became the most famous baseball player of all time. The reason that Jeter became that top dog was because as a child he had developed a love for the game and every day jumped his fence to practice on the high school field. Once Jeter made the Yankees him and his family moved to New York just to watch him play. At another point in his life as a Yankee he and pop singer Mariah Carey started dating but then sooner announced that they were just friends. The reason that I like Jeter is because me and him we both play baseball.

On the Field with Derek Jeter by Matt Christopher is a biography about a star baseball player named Derek Jeter and how he got through his childhood in Michagen. The main character Derek Jeter loved baseball and other sports. The main character Derek Jeter seems to be a believabale because he is a real person. In my mind Derek Jeter looks like a person with brown hair with tan skin and is tall. A quote Derek Jeter has said is "There may be people who have more talent than you, but there is no excuse for someone to work harder than you". This quote repersents that people are always going to be better than you at something but that doesnt mean you cant work hard to be the best. The actions of Derek Jeter tells me that he is a very humble person. In my opinion I love this book because I love sports and sports biographies.

On the Field with...Derek Jeter by Matt Christopher was a very informative book. It was informative because it described everything about Derek Jeter's life. It described how he grew up, his family, and home. It covered all of his life from when he was young to the last day of his baseball career. I learned a lot about him and how good of a person he is. He does a lot of charity work, including creating a foundation that helps teenagers with drug problems.

The book explains how he fell in love with baseball when he was young. It explains how he became so good in his younger years. The book tells you everything about how he made it to the MLB. All of the big events in life were described, like getting drafted, his first home run, making it into the all-star game, and winning the World Series.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes baseball.

On the Field with....Derek Jeter was a good book about the life of Derek Jeter from childhood to now. Derek Jeter is the shortstop on the New York Yankees. It was his childhood dream to play for the Yankees. The book tells about how he made this dream real. He started playing baseball at a young age and was really good at it. He worked hard, but he was also very athletic. His parents supported his interest in sports, but he also was a good student. He was so good at baseball in high school that he was drafted at age 18 to the Yankees. He didn't start playing in the Major Leagues until 1995. He's still on the team and is now the team captain. The Yankees won their 27th World Series title in 2009. Derek was a big part of that victory.

This book is about a baseball player Derek Jeter. The book talks about how Derek Jeter plays for the New York Yankees. Derek is a great baseball player, and a future hall of famer. The book explains how Jeter signed a big contract with the Yankees, at a young age.

I would recommend this book to people who want to learn more about baseball. Even though im not a yankees fan, and i HATE the yankees i didnt let that prevent me from reading this book.

If i were to rate this book out of ten, i would give it a six. It's a typical biography of an athlete.
