The Path of Sri Ramana

Rate this book
According to David Godman, author of Be As You Are, this is "a book, written by Sadhu Om, that is the only text which gives a detailed explanation of the correct way of doing self-enquiry. Sadhu Om spent several years with Bhagavan in the 1940s and he was Muruganar’s literary executor. This book also contains a brief biography of Bhagavan and a complete translation of Who am I?, Bhagavan’s own prose presentation of his key teachings."

One of the best books ever written regarding the process and theory behind self-inquiry, and Self-realization in general. Written by a direct disciple of Sri Ramana Maharshi, it describes the process of self-inquiry in simple terms.

"Path of Sri Ramana" is a book on the biography of Sri Ramana written by one of his disciples, Sri Sadhu Om. The book is an explanation of Sri Ramana's philosophy of Self Realization through his Self Enquiry Method. The essential theme closely parallels that of Vedenta Philosophy of the "One", that we are one consciousness and that we are not the body, the mind or our senses. This book embellishes and clarifies several points in several of Sri Ramana's other books. I would highly recommend this book

Comprehensive guide to teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi.

The author summarises Sri Ramana's teachings according to his interpretation, quoting extensively from Sri Ramana himself and Muruganar, one of the former's closest disciples. However, this is part of the reason why this book is very long.

I'm not sure I entirely agree with labelling part 2 'supplement', since I believe it nicely fleshes out the teachings with explanations of karma and devotion (bhakti). The gradations of bhakti was particularly interesting to me. I also really liked the chapter on how to integrate these teachings into daily life. One surprising but great suggestion was to reduce the amount of formal sitting 'meditation' time to only 10 minutes a day (at least for beginners), while try to find gaps in ones daily schedule where one can abide in the self ('just be'). The meditation itself is to investigate 'who am I?' and abide in that sense of self. Given that the mind will wonder, during meditation it is advised to completely relax and give up the investigation for a short time. This way of practicing is invigorating and I believe much more likely to induce realisation than slogging through.

There is a tone of absolute devotion to the guru and I am wary of anything that says "this is the only way". Especially the appendix chapter on the worship of the hill seemed a bit doctrinal and odd.

I found lots of similarities with Zen, and I think anyone no matter their faith can find benefit in these teachings.

Profound, insightful text

Answered many of the remaining questions I had regarding self-enquiry and the path shown by Bhagavan. Very insightful and instructive. Chock full of wisdom for divine surrender. The book leaves no doubt that these are the words of a sincere seeker who has discovered the truth.
