Damien can’t understand his fascination with ambitious Roberta Taylor. And Roberta is bewildered by her reaction to Damien’s exotic looks.. She is a wealthy successful lady. How could she be attracted to a useless drifter, charming or not? Set in Canada’s Civil War – the Riel Rebellion of 1885.
Born and bred on western stories by Zane Grey and Louis L’Amour, I grew up in the middle of nowhere Saskatchewan. Although modern life intervened, I soon realized the similarities between my life and North American western past. From riding horses, playing cowboys and Indians with real Indians combined with the scenery of vast, open prairies and endless horizons I was living my dream.
I have never forgotten my past or my love of anything country regardless of where I roam. I am back now in that wonderful city I love - Cow Town.
I belong to the Romance Writer’s Association of America and the Alberta Romance Writer’s Association and have attended many conventions in both Canada and the USA. I also edit/critique manuscripts. I have published – ”Hawk’s Gift“, ”Alberta Wild Rose“ ”Paradise on the Horizon” all historical romance and - “One Dance with a Stranger”, a contemporary romance.
I can't get over the love story. So intense and all consuming. Roberta and Damien come from opposing worlds. She's a wealthy daughter of a prominent Canadian politician and newspaper owner. He's a half-breed orphan, Metis, mixed-blood castoff from society.
Roberta lived a privileged life until the day she is trapped in a brothel being auctioned off. She went there to interview the madam, but was captured and offered for sale. Something about her triggered Damien's sense of chivalry and he rescues her. From that moment on, their mutual obsession coupled with deep seated cultural misunderstanding tortures them from rapturous passion to agonizing and excruciating separation.
Both strong willed and determined, neither Roberta nor Damien can compromise their ideal of true love and trust. Even as lust draws them together, unrequited love and unbelief thrust them apart. This tug of war lasts through the historical events around the disposition of Native populations by the Canadian government. Her detailed research and mesmerizing descriptions pulled me into the environment of the western territories and the lives of the Native Americans on the run from the government and later on in the reservation.
But despite the historical backdrop, this is an intense love story, a roller coaster of love, hate, lust, distrust and hope. This will definitely be a story I'll remember and want to re-read again.

Hawks' Gift is a historical romance set in Canada in the late 1800's. We first meet Damien Larocque as a boy who witnesses the death of his parents on the same day in 1860. He is Metis a member of one of the aboriginal people of Canada.
In 1881 he is in Winnipeg. Now a grown man he finds himself bidding $1000 to rescue a young lady. Roberta Taylor is a reporter. Head-strong and ambitious she wants to interview Big Bear, a leader of one of the indigenous Indian tribes who is currently refusing to move to a reservation. He's holed up in Montana and Roberta's brother pays Damien to take his sister to meet the Indian Chief.
Roberta has a knack for finding trouble and is a source of confusion, contradiction and frustration to Damien. She blows hot and cold and wants answers in a way any reporter does. He's determined to teach her a lesson as well as make her understand what the White man is doing to the land and it's people.
This book is a great way to learn about the history of the time from less famous battles between the White man and the Native people and to hear about such events as The Riel Rebellion of 1885 and The Frog Lake Massacre. With it is a feisty romance between two great characters.
Beautifully written from the first sentence. this book captivates all of your senses, and takes you on a breathtaking journey.Th Hawks gift is really a gift and i enjoyed reading it. :)
